Book Six Months in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Six Months in California Classic Reprint written by J. G. Player-Frowd and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in California Before the completion of the railroad from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, the countries lying west of the Rocky Mountains were terra incognita, or at best only known to those few whom the love of adventure and gain had drawn to those distant lands. California especially, being the most celebrated, bad been the most misrepresented. By the majority the land was regarded as teeming with gold and abounding in iniquity; a paradise for paupers, and a refuge for the scum of the earth. To a certain extent this was true. Labour was very well paid, the profits of business were very large, gold abounded in the mines, and poverty springing from want of work was unknown. Flush times naturally induced lavishness in the style of living, and prodigality led to intemperance; but, to-day, San Francisco is as orderly a city as any in the Union, - certainly more so than New York. The number of travellers attracted to California during the last year lias been very great, and I anticipate a large increase for the year to come. My visit to that country has been so interesting, and attended with so much pleasure, that I have been induced to publish a slight sketch of my experiences, not only as a guide to the traveller. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California the Golden IN the preparation of this book the author has not Sought to write a complete history of the great Commonwealth of California, but has endeavored to set forth, in simple narrative, the salient features in the fascinating story of the upbuilding of the Golden State. Himself a native son of California, born of pioneer parents, he has long cherished the hope of seeing wider and deeper interest in State and local history taken by citizens of California and especially by pupils in the schools. In adding this volume to the stories OF the states series, therefore, he has had constantly in mind the needs of that great army of boys and girls in our public and private schools, whose lives should be enriched and ennobled by intelligent instruction in the history of our great. Book California Romantic and Beautiful Classic Reprint

Download or read book California Romantic and Beautiful Classic Reprint written by George Wharton James and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California, Romantic and Beautiful Romance and Beauty are words inseparably connected with California. It is impossible to dissever them. Many years ago Mrs. Cyril Flower (nee Lady Constance Rothschild) told me the following characteristic story of Joaquin Miller, the Poet of the Sierras. It was at the time when Mrs. Langtry was in the height of her fame and all London was anxious to meet her. The poet also was very popular in England, and Mrs. Flower planned a great reception at which these two were to meet as the guests of honour. Her salon was one of the gathering-places of the most brilliant men and women of Europe and the taste and fashion of the country assembled there. When Joaquin was personally notified by Lady Constance that she desired his presence, he coolly and nonchalantly asked her if he might appear dressed in a California miner's costume. She freely gave her gracious consent. The night of the function the servitor at the door was almost shocked into paralysis when Joaquin appeared clothed in red shirt, blue overalls, and high-heeled top-boots with his trousers legs thrust into them. He also wore his high-crowned, broad-brimmed sombrero. Haughtily he was bidden go to the back door. With equanimity he bade the "flunkey" tell Lady Constance that "Joaquin Mliller was at the door." Book History of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of California Classic Reprint written by Helen Elliott Bandini and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of California This book is an attempt to present the history of California in so simple and interesting a way that children may read it with pleasure. It does not confine itself to the history of one section or period, but tells the story of all the principal events from the Indian occupancy through the Spanish and Mission days, the excitement of the gold discovery, the birth of the state, down to the latest events of yesterday and to-day. Several chapters, also, are devoted to the development of California's great industries. The work is designed not only for children, but also for older people interested in the story of California, including the tourists who visit the state by the thousand every year. For her information the writer has depended almost entirely upon source material, seldom making use of a secondary work. Her connection with the old Spanish families has opened to her unusual advantages for the study of old manuscripts and for the gathering of recollections of historical events which she has taken from the lips of aged Spanish residents, always verifying a statement before using it. She has, also, from long familiarity with the Spanish-speaking people, been able to interpret truly the life of the Spanish and Mission period. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of California Several of the stories endeavor to explain the remarkable physical characteristics of California. The work to this end was rendered lighter by the hope that the reader might find the book merely an introduction to that larger knowledge of personal observation and inquiry. But the writer's chief aim has been to interest the children of California in the beautiful land of their birth, to unfold to them the life and occurrences of bygone days, and to lead them to note and to enjoy their fortunate surroundings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Resources of California I undertake to write the resources of a state, which, though young in years, small in population, and remote from the chief centres of civilization, is yet known to the furthest corners of the earth, and, during the last twelve years, has had an influence upon the course of human life, and the prosperity and trade of nations, more powerful than that exerted' during the same period by kingdoms whose subjects are numbered by millions, whose history dates back through thousands of years, and whose present stock of wealth began to accumulate before our continent was discovered, or our language was formed. I write of a land of wonders. I write 'of California, which has astonished the world by the great migration that suddenly built up the first large Caucasian community on the shores of the North Pacific by her vast yield of gold, amounting within thirteen years to $7 which has sensibly affected the markets of labor and money in all the leading nations of Christendom; by the rapid development and great extent of her commerce; by the greatness of her chief port, which at one time had more large ships at her anchorage than were ever seen together in the harbor of either Liverpool, New York, or London by the swift settlement of her remote districts; by the prompt organization of her government.
