Excerpt: ... was not disturbed; and that absurd and mendacious person disappeared from the stage of history. His book, however, remained, to be an enigma to bibliographers and antiquaries. Sketch of the Life of Edward Johnson.1 CAPTAIN EDWARD JOHNSON was born in 1599.2 Before emigrating to New-England, he resided in the Parish of Herne3 Hill, near Canterbury, County of Kent, England. In England he was possessed of a comfortable estate, consisting of a farm and two other pieces of property, which he held during his lifetime, and in his Will bequeathed them to six of his grandchildren.1 1 The following notices of Captain Johnson have appeared in print: -- Rev. Joseph Chickering, in a Discourse preached at the dedication of the meetinghouse in Woburn, June 28, 1809, and printed the same year, gave a brief sketch of " the Father of the town," a page of which was reprinted in the Massachusetts Historical Collections, xii. 95. Mr. John Farmer published a notice of half a column in the Columbian Centinel of June 16, 1819, which he subsequently inserted, with a few alterations, in Farmer and Moore's New-Hampshire Collections (i. 252), where it occupies a little more than three pages. Mr. Farmer fell into the strange mistake of confounding Captain Johnson with Isaac Johnson, and made the former one of the founders of the church in Charlestown in 1632. Captain Johnson was not in NewEngland at that time. Neither of the above writers were aware that he. returned to England soon after he came over with Winthrop's company, and was absent nearly five years. Allen's American Biographical Dictionary of 1809 gave him seven lines. The third edition, 1857, gave him nearly half a page. Eliot's Biographical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New-England, 1809, made no...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Say "New England" and you likely conjure up an image in the mind of your listener: the snowy woods or stone wall of a Robert Frost poem, perhaps, or that quintessential icon of the region--the idyllic white village. Such images remind us that, as Joseph Conforti notes, a region is not just a territory on the ground. It is also a place in the imagination. This ambitious work investigates New England as a cultural invention, tracing the region's changing identity across more than three centuries. Incorporating insights from history, literature, art, material culture, and geography, it shows how succeeding generations of New Englanders created and broadcast a powerful collective identity for their region through narratives about its past. Whether these stories were told in the writings of Frost or Harriet Beecher Stowe, enacted in historical pageants or at colonial revival museums, or conveyed in the pages of a geography textbook or Yankee magazine, New Englanders used them to sustain their identity, revising them as needed to respond to the shifting regional landscape.

Book The Anatomy of National Fantasy

Download or read book The Anatomy of National Fantasy written by Lauren Berlant and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991-08-13 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the complex relationships between the political, popular, sexual, and textual interests of Nathaniel Hawthorne's work, Lauren Berlant argues that Hawthorne mounted a sophisticated challenge to America's collective fantasy of national unity. She shows how Hawthorne's idea of citizenship emerged from an attempt to adjudicate among the official and the popular, the national and the local, the collective and the individual, utopia and history. At the core of Berlant's work is a three-part study of The Scarlet Letter, analyzing the modes and effects of national identity that characterize the narrator's representation of Puritan culture and his construction of the novel's political present tense. This analysis emerges from an introductory chapter on American citizenship in the 1850s and a following chapter on national fantasy, ranging from Hawthorne's early work "Alice Doane's Appeal" to the Statue of Liberty. In her conclusion, Berlant suggests that Hawthorne views everyday life and local political identities as alternate routes to the revitalization of the political and utopian promises of modern national life.

Book The Puritan Ideology of Mobility

Download or read book The Puritan Ideology of Mobility written by Scott McDermott and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puritan Ideology of Mobility: Corporatism, the Politics of Place, and the Founding of New England Towns before 1650 examines the ideology that English Puritans developed to justify migration: their migration from England to New England, migrations from one town to another within New England, and, often, their repatriation to the mother country. Puritan leaders believed firmly that nations, colonies, and towns were all “bodies politic,” that is, living and organic social bodies. However, if a social body became distempered because of scarce resources or political or religious discord, it became necessary to create a new social body from the old in order to restore balance and harmony. The new social body was articulated through the social ritual of land distribution according to Aristotelian “distributive justice.” The book will trace this process at work in the founding of Ipswich and its satellite town in Massachusetts.
