Book Prayers God Always Answers

Download or read book Prayers God Always Answers written by Nancy Kennedy and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2011-05-18 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have a secret prayer," confesses humorist Nancy Kennedy. "Every night before I go to sleep, I pray that I will wake up with a body like Cindy Crawford's...that the pile of Hershey kisses I ate won't go directly to my thighs...that one day someone will push a refrigerator-size check in my face and say, 'You've just won 11 million dollars!'" But Kennedy has also prayed for "nobler" things - like patience, strength, and a deeper trust in God. But, as she's found, prayers are not always answered in the way one expects. Like many others, she has wondered: "Why do I sometimes get immediate answers to my prayers, completely unexpected answers to others, and occasionally no answer at all? What can I legitimately pray for, according to the Bible? Will God respond to my prayers if I lack faith that He'll answer? Does God even need my prayers, since He must know what He wants to do already? With lighthearted humor and godly wisdom, Nancy Kennedy explores readers' most burning questions about prayer, solving a great deal of the mystery through an examination of those wonderful prayers God always answers: ones that lovingly conform us to the image of Christ.

Book Defiant Daughters 21 Women on Art Activism Animals and The Sexual Politics of Meat

Download or read book Defiant Daughters 21 Women on Art Activism Animals and The Sexual Politics of Meat written by Carol J. Adams and published by Lantern Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory by Carol J. Adams was published more than twenty years ago, it caused a immediate stir among writers and thinkers, feminists and animal rights activists alike. Never before had the relationship between patriarchy and meat eating been drawn so clearly, the idea that there lies a strong connection between the consumption of women and animals so plainly asserted. But, as the 21 personal stories in this anthology show, the impact of this provocative text on women's lives continues to this day, and it is as diverse as it is revelatory. One writer attempts to reconcile her feminist-vegan beliefs with her Muslim upbringing; a second makes the connection between animal abuse and her own self-destructive tendencies. A new mother discusses the sexual politics of breastfeeding, while another pens a letter to her young son about all she wishes for him in the future. Many others recall how the book inspired them to start careers in the music business, animal advocacy, and food. No matter whether they first read it in college or later in life, whether they are in their late teens or early forties, these writers all credit The Sexual Politics of Meat in some way with the awakening of their identities as feminists, activists, and women. Even if you haven't read the original work, you're sure to be moved and inspired by these tales of growing up and, perhaps more important, waking up to the truths around us.

Book Tits Up The Top Half of Women s Liberation

Download or read book Tits Up The Top Half of Women s Liberation written by Sarah Thornton and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2024-05-07 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative investigation of the five strange worlds that worship women’s chests. After years of biopsies, best-selling author Sarah Thornton made the difficult decision to have a double mastectomy. But, after her reconstructive surgery, she was perplexed: What had she lost? And gained? An experienced sleuth, she resolved to venture behind the scenes to uncover the social and cultural significance of breasts. Riotous and galvanizing, Tits Up excavates the diverse truths of mammary glands from the strip club to the operating room, from the nation’s oldest human milk bank to the fit rooms of bra designers. Thornton draws insights from plastic surgeons, lactation consultants, body-positive witches, lingerie models, and “free the nipple” activists to explore the status of breasts as emblems of femininity. She examines how women’s chests have become a billion-dollar business, as well as a stage for debates about race, class, gender, and desire. Everywhere she turns, Thornton encounters chauvinist myths about this elemental body part that quietly justify deficits in women’s bodily autonomy and endorse shortfalls in their political status. Blending sociology, reportage, and personal narrative with refreshing optimism and wit, Thornton has one overriding ambition—to liberate breasts from centuries of patriarchal prejudice.

Download or read book Maids Wives Widows written by Sara Read and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-05-30 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broad-ranging exploration of the everyday lives of women—from social calls to medical needs—during one of English history’s most fascinating periods. Maids, wives, and widows were the official classifications of women according to English law in the early modern era, immediately following the medieval period. In this fascinating study of the time, historian Sara Read shows “how varied, rich, joyous, and sociable early modern women’s lives were, not to mention just how busy or difficult they could be” (Read, from the introduction). Read delves into how these women filled their days, including vivid details of what they liked to eat and drink, what jobs they held, and how they raised their children. With chapters devoted to beauty regimes, fashion, and literature, the book examines the cultural and domestic aspects of life, as well as how women understood and dealt with their monthly periods and what it was like to give birth in a time before modern obstetric care was available. Maids, Wives, Widows also highlights key moments in women’s history such as the 1671 publication of the first midwifery guide by Jane Sharp; the turmoil caused by the Civil Wars of the 1640s; the various new religious sects in which women participated to a surprising extent; and many others. Also scrutinized are cases of notorious criminals such as murderer Sarah Malcolm and confidence trickster Mary Toft who pretended to give birth to rabbits.

Book Cigar Box Lithographs

Download or read book Cigar Box Lithographs written by Charles J. Humber and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CIGAR BOX LITHOGRAPHS: The Inside Stories Uncovered is a thought-provoking production exposing its readership to more than 160 vintage cigar boxes manufactured during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most convey stunning litho- graphs that portray prominent historical figures. Such cigar boxes during the 19th century attracted a massive smoking cliental numbering in the millions.... While puffers more than one hundred years ago likely recognized the prominent personalities peering at them from the inside labels of these wooden cigar boxes, those same headlined names, today, are now essentially erased from memory. Lew Wallace (1827- 1905), portrayed in this stunning portrait label, is virtually a forgotten name today. World-famous during his day, he was not only a Major General during the Civil War but became more famous when he wrote what some consider to be the best-selling novel of the 19th century. His Ben Hur (see page 34), a novel that was turned into a Hollywood blockbuster winning a record eleven Oscars in 1959, was certainly the most read and the best-known book title during the 20th century, that is, until it was superseded by Gone with the Wind in the 1930s. By examining the cartouche to the left of this stunning label portrait, one detects Wallace’s role as a General during the Civil War, especially at the Battle of Shiloh. The cartouche to the right of his portrait details his writing studio in Crawfordsville, Indiana. This is where his most famous novel was written. Cigar boxes from the past often became an educational platform inadvertently recording and preserving history. To this day, this nearly 120-year old collectible cigar container whispers its provocative past, that is, providing one takes time out to lift its lid and peer at the lithographic image waiting to be re-discovered or uncovered.... Peer long enough and the box just might whisper its past to you.
