Book After the Cure

Download or read book After the Cure written by Emily K. Abel and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2010-08-30 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the book jacket: Chemo Brain. Fatigue. Chronic Pain. Insomnia. Depression. These are just a few of the ongoing, debilitating symptoms that plague some breast cancer survivors long after their treatments have officially ended. After The Cure is a compelling read filled with fascinating portraits of women who are living with the aftermath of breast cancer. Having heard repeatedly that the problems are all in your head, many don't know where to turn for help. The doctors who now refuse to validate their symptoms are often the very ones they depended on to provide life-saving treatments. Sometimes family members, who provided essential support through months of chemotherapy and radiation, don't believe them. Their work lives, already disrupted by both cancer and its treatment, are further undermined by the lingering symptoms. And every symptom is a constant reminder of the trauma of diagnosis, the ordeal of treatment, and the specter of recurrence. Most narratives about surviving breast cancer end with the conclusion of chemotherapy and radiation, painting stereotypical portraits of triumphantly healthy survivors, women who not only survive but emerge better and stronger than before. After The Cure allows us to hear the voices of those who are silenced by the optimistic breast cancer culture, women who live with a broad array of health problems long after therapy ends. Here, at last, survivors step out of the shadows and speak compellingly about their real stories, giving voice to the complicated, often bittersweet realities of life after the cure.

Book Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer

Download or read book Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-03-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Meeting Psychosocial Needs of Women with Breast Cancer, the National Cancer Policy Board of the Institute of Medicine examines the psychosocial consequences of the cancer experience. The book focuses specifically on breast cancer in women because this group has the largest survivor population (over 2 million) and this disease is the most extensively studied cancer from the standpoint of psychosocial effects. The book characterizes the psychosocial consequences of a diagnosis of breast cancer, describes psychosocial services and how they are delivered, and evaluates their effectiveness. It assesses the status of professional education and training and applied clinical and health services research and proposes policies to improve the quality of care and quality of life for women with breast cancer and their families. Because cancer of the breast is likely a good model for cancer at other sites, recommendations for this cancer should be applicable to the psychosocial care provided generally to individuals with cancer. For breast cancer, and indeed probably for any cancer, the report finds that psychosocial services can provide significant benefits in quality of life and success in coping with serious and life-threatening disease for patients and their families.

Book Common Issues in Breast Cancer Survivors

Download or read book Common Issues in Breast Cancer Survivors written by Gretchen G. Kimmick and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clinically useful resource for evaluation and management of the symptoms and issues that burden survivors of breast cancer. Improvements to breast cancer screening and treatment have resulted in more patients than ever before having been cured after local definitive and systemic therapies. Primary care providers and specialists must be increasingly familiar with the issues that breast cancer survivors routinely face. This is the first book to provide a single resource for common issues faced by breast cancer survivors from a truly multidisciplinary perspective; each chapter of this text is coauthored by at least one oncologist and one specialist outside the field of oncology in order to include the perspectives of relevant disciplines. User-friendly and clinically applicable to all specialties, individual chapters also include tables and figures that describe how best to conduct initial evaluation of the given symptom as well as an algorithm, where applicable, outlining the optimal management approach. Common Issues in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Practical Guide to Evaluation and Management empowers non-cancer specialists and practitioners who care for breast cancer survivors to address common issues that impact patient quality of life.

Book Not Just One in Eight

Download or read book Not Just One in Eight written by Barbara Stevens and published by HCI. This book was released on 2000-10-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words "you have breast cancer" have the power to terrify a woman and the people who love her, irrevocably changing their lives forever. The underlying premise of Not Just One in Eight is that breast cancer, like other life-threatening diseases, is not a one-person disease. It is above all a family disease-one that tests the mettle of each family member. Not Just One in Eight is the culmination of the author's five-year odyssey to understand the physical and emotional ramifications of a breast cancer diagnosis, from the moment of its pronouncement, to how a woman and her family experience the disease. Not Just One in Eight focuses on nineteen breast cancer survivors; eighteen women and one man. Each story chronicles one survivor and their support team. By weaving together the survivor and the support team's perceptions, the true picture is revealed in one coherent story. How did each person handle the diagnosis? What medical decisions were made? How and why did they reach those decisions? What fears did they confront? Were relationships strengthened or weakened? How did children cope? Did the fear of dying increase or decrease with time? Each story ends with a postscript: Where are they today? Patricia A. Ganz, M.D., a renowned oncologist and researcher, explains the latest breast cancer research. Janis Raynak, a malpractice attorney with an emphasis on breast cancer cases, reveals how women can prevent a misdiagnosis, and offers recourse if a misdiagnosis is made. Lastly, the survivor and her partner candidly discuss their views on sex and sexuality. How did and how does a breast cancer diagnosis affect this very important part of our lives. As a survivor and the daughter of a mother who had breast cancer, Stevens provides a compassionate, informative and provocative look at how a woman and her family can survive a breast cancer diagnosis.

Book Young breast cancer survivors

Download or read book Young breast cancer survivors written by Florence K L Tangka and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic burden of breast cancer for women under 50 in the United States remains largely unexplored, in part because young women make up a small proportion of breast cancer cases overall. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a web-based survey to compare data from breast cancer survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis and 40–49 years of age at first diagnosis. We administered a survey to a national convenience sample of 416 women who were 18–49 years of age at the time of their breast cancer diagnosis. We analyzed factors associated with financial decline using multivariate regression.Survivors 18–39 years of age at first diagnosis were more likely to report Stage II–IV breast cancer (P < 0.01). They also quit their jobs more often (14.6%) than older survivors (4.4%; P < 0.01) and faced more job performance issues (55.7% and 42.8%, respectively; P = 0.02). For respondents in both groups, financial decline was more likely if the survivor had at least one comorbid condition (odds ratios: 2.36–3.21) or was diagnosed at Stage II–IV breast cancer (odds ratios: 2.04–3.51).

Book The Black Woman s Breast Cancer Survival Guide

Download or read book The Black Woman s Breast Cancer Survival Guide written by Cheryl D. Holloway and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breast cancer is reaching epidemic levels, especially among black women. This survival guide provides tools that women—black women in particular—can use to identify and combat this all-too-common threat. This "what you need to know" guide is unique in its common sense, "laywoman's" approach and particular relevance to women of color. Its premise is simple: ignorance and lack of education about breast cancer signs and symptoms are still all too prevalent among black women. Many women are not informed about resources available for early detection screening and are not referred for mammography screening. They may also receive significantly delayed treatment—especially black women. For those reasons and more, black women with or at risk for breast cancer need an advocate who speaks for them and tells them the truth. They have that advocate in Cheryl Holloway, PhD—and in this book. A breast cancer survivor and cancer researcher, Dr. Holloway draws on her personal experience and research to offer something far different than the usual medical/oncological works. Her book provides support, current information, and practical advice for confronting and beating the disease. The book is divided into four parts. "Dealing with the Basics" explains how breast cancer hits black women harder and discusses the types of breast cancer they may develop, with an emphasis on the most dangerous. The second section offers practical information, such as how screenings work and the meaning of various breast cancer tests. Part three describes treatments, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, combined therapy, and other options. The final section describes how to stay vigilant after the cancer is gone and also discusses other forms of cancer for which black women are at risk, such as lung cancer, colon cancer, and cervical cancer.

Each chapter provides background and a practical guide in the management of women after the initial phase of diagnosis and treatment. Authored by a multidisciplinary team this book provides all the relevant expertise as well as different perspectives, providing a holistic picture of early breast cancer consequences. Book Health Communication and Breast Cancer among Black Women

Download or read book Health Communication and Breast Cancer among Black Women written by Annette D. Madlock and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Communication and Breast Cancer among Black Women: Culture, Identity, Spirituality, and Strength addresses how the discourse of strength constructs the identity of Black women even during times of chronic illness through the lens of Black feminist thought and womanist ideology. In doing so, Madlock Gatison explores how the narratives surrounding pink ribbon awareness and survivorship culture, religion and spirituality, and the myth of the strong Black woman impact Black female breast cancer survivors’ self-perceptions, views others had of them, and their ability to express their needs and concerns including those involving their healthcare. This book will be of interest to scholars of public health, health communication, and sociology.

Book Improving Outcomes for Breast Cancer Survivors

Download or read book Improving Outcomes for Breast Cancer Survivors written by Patricia A. Ganz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In collaboration with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), this timely volume provides a comprehensive review on all areas of breast cancer survivorship research, highlighting research that is underway or in development. The range of topics covered include the biology and management of fatigue and cognitive dysfunction on breast cancer survivorship, the biology and management of Neuropathy and Arthralgias, the ongoing research on the biology of diet and lifestyle interventions in survivors, and more. With the tremendous growth in the number of breast cancer survivors, researchers have moved beyond describing the outcomes of breast cancer treatments and are focusing their research on understanding the mechanisms underlying the development of the late effects of breast cancer treatment, as well as the development and evaluation of interventions to mitigate some of the persistent symptoms—topics which are also explored in this volume. In addition, current research on how to improve survivorship and reduce recurrence of breast cancer through behavioral and lifestyle modifications is also discussed.

  • Pages : 443 pages

Download or read book Breast Cancer written by Julianne S Oktay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I will always and forever feel I have a 'hole' in my life where my mother once existed.” “I think, when you have to think about the fact you might have to take care of your parents someday and juggle kids at the same time…It's a scary proposition.” “We had open communication during and before the breast cancer. But then after the breast cancer, I was often afraid to bring things up, in trying to protect Mom.” This insightful book tells the stories of women whose mothers had breast cancer. It uses their own voices to express the common fears and expectations of daughters in the periods before and during their mothers' illnesses, involving genetic risks, death and dying, and changes in their relationships. The case studies, tables and figures, and two appendices will benefit health professionals and counselors, while the poignant narratives will help mothers and daughters better understand their experiences with breast cancer. “I was kind of surprised to be alive and free of cancer at age 42, when at this point my mother was crippled by metastases. When I get to be 43—the age at which my mother died, or maybe when I get to 44—it's like, 'what do I do?' I have this life that I didn't expect to have.” Breast Cancer: Daughters Tell Their Stories presents the results of a qualitative, grounded theory study of breast cancer survivors, providing in-depth information about an aspect of breast cancer that has been previously overlooked. The book examines the daughters' experiences through four phases—the period prior to mother's illness, the period during mother's illness and treatment, the period following mother's death (if mother dies), and the long-term impact. From this study, recommendations are compiled for providing or improving services for tomorrow's daughters. “The radical mastectomy left her scarred and disfigured below her nightgown. It was bruised and nasty looking. That was kind of scary. I think that has terrified me since. Sometimes I'll have pains in my left breast and that's what I visualize. It's terrifying.” “I'm not really obsessed about dying of cancer. I'm more along the line of, 'If this is going to happen to me, and there's a chance it's going to, I'm gonna survive. I'm not going to die from it.” From an empathetic perspective, this book reveals how many daughters react to and deal with their mothers' diagnoses, depending on their age and family situation at the time of their mothers' illnesses. It shows how daughters can gain a more accurate idea of their level of risk by providing educational materials and developing new strategies for communication. It also helps breast cancer survivors see how their illnesses can shape their daughters' future outlook, offering new inspiration for resolving and preventing family crises.
