Book Yoruba Women Work and Social Change

Download or read book Yoruba Women Work and Social Change written by Marjorie K. McIntosh and published by . This book was released on 2009-03-18 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yoruba, one of the largest and most historically important ethnic groups in Nigeria, are noted for the economic activity, confidence, and authority of their women. Yoruba Women, Work, and Social Change traces the history of women in Yorubaland from around 1820 to 1960 and Nigerian independence. Integrating fresh material from local court records and four decades of existing scholarship, Marjorie Keniston McIntosh shows how and why women's roles and status changed during the 19th century and the colonial era. McIntosh emphasizes connections between their duties within the household, their income-generating work, and their responsibilities in religious, cultural, social, and political contexts. She highlights the forms of patriarchy found within Yorubaland and explores the impact of Christianity, colonialism, and international capitalism. This keen and insightful work offers a unique view of Yoruba women's initiative, adaptability, and skill at working in groups.

Book BEYOND OUR IMAGINATIONS

Download or read book BEYOND OUR IMAGINATIONS written by Simi Afonja and published by ChudacePublishing. This book was released on 2022-06-17 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond our Imaginations: African Women’s Realities is the product of dialogues on Gender and Feminism in the region of Africa. It is the first in the series “Feminism Visions of Society.” The book provides a balanced review of Western and West African theories and of participatory methodologies paying particular attention to the exclusion of grassroots feminism from the growing body of knowledge and action. It builds on existing essentialist theorizing without disregarding the overlaps with feminism in other cultures. Cultural knowledge is extended in discussions of grassroots women’s loss of power and voice through changing gender images; the declining culture of the Deitification of Motherhood; Women’s Leadership in Modern Markets; Female Traditional Rulership; and Women’s Influence in Community Development and Peace Building. This book helps to understand why too often there are gaps between theory and the policies designed to improve African Women’s lives. There is also a repertoire of qualitative data about feminist practices and strategies at the household level, in the workplace, and the political domains as part of the patriarchal bargain in African cultures. While the collection celebrates the importance of the imagination in building feminist knowledge, it takes a more cautionary stand, calls for methodological flexibility and sophistication as African scholars expand feminist knowledge.

Book Women s Political Visibility and Media Access

Download or read book Women s Political Visibility and Media Access written by Oladokun Omojola and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constitutions of most countries frown at gender discrimination. Local, multinational and multilateral organizations in many developed and developing nations have instituted policies and taken actions that address cases of injustice against women. But gender inequity appears to be an issue beyond what constitutional provisions and corporate strategies can address. How, for instance, does a statutory provision guarantee the equal visibility of men and women in a news report, especially in a neoliberal democracy where the general patriarchal character of the media aligns with the logic of commercialism which prioritizes profit and targets mainly those who have the means of purchase? The invisibility of women in the media is a global issue, and a great concern in Africa. Women’s Political Visibility and Media Access: The Case of Nigeria, however, is about a country of over 160 million people; a population roughly divided equally between male and female. The book, through empirical analyses and qualitative discourses, agglomerates several perspectives regarding the visibility of women in the turbulent Nigerian political terrain and the response of the media in that direction, in a concerted effort to resolve the burning issues of gender equality in Nigeria. The book assesses the impact of aggressive tactics from women in the political arena, “conscious reporting” of women by journalists, and the increased use of ICTs by women as practical ways of bridging this wide gap.
