In all of these programs, these “founding mothers” grappled not only with issues of gender, but with those of class, race, and sexuality in a decade infused with political unrest and questioning, when civil rights and anti-war activism, as well as feminism, shaped academic worlds.

After an introductory chapter, individual chapters address the following topics: (1) origins of the program; (2) the academic program, including courses, structure, and definitions; (3) the faculty, from the original nine program founders through the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; (4) the students, and changes through the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s; (5) program leadership and the changing role of the Women's Studies program leader; (6) women's studies beyond the classroom; and (7) issues and trends, such as women's studies as a program or a department, women's studies as a discipline, tokenism, course selection, cross-listing of courses, teaching diversity, and the women's center. A concluding chapter offers final thoughts of the two authors. Attached are a timeline and an appendix which includes titles of women's studies courses, names of instructors and program leaders, the survey questions, a curriculum analysis (by George A.
