Book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control

Download or read book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2006 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most women who die from cervical cancer, particularly in developing countries, are in the prime of their life. They may be raising children, caring for their family, and contributing to the social and economic life of their town or village. Their death is both a personal tragedy, and a sad and unnecessary loss to their family and their community. Unnecessary, because there is compelling evidence, as this Guide makes clear, that cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer, as long as it is detected early and managed effectively. Unfortunately, the majority of women in developing countries still do not have access to cervical cancer prevention programmes. The consequence is that, often, cervical cancer is not detected until it is too late to be cured. An urgent effort is required if this situation is to be corrected. This Guide is intended to help those responsible for providing services aimed at reducing the burden posed by cervical cancer for women, communities and health systems. It focuses on the knowledge and skills needed by health care providers, at different levels of care.

Book Barriers to cervical cancer screening practices among women in Gishu County Kenya

Download or read book Barriers to cervical cancer screening practices among women in Gishu County Kenya written by Hillary Mabeya and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Medicine - Other, , language: English, abstract: The study focused on factors that act as barriers to the utilization of cervical cancer screening practices among women living in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The objectives of study were to describe the knowledge level about cervical cancer and screening practices (causes, risk factors and early detection) among women living in Uasin Gishu County, to describe women’ perceptions and attitudes towards cervical cancer and screening practices, to determine the level of cervical screening utilization and whether cervical screening practices vary between rural and urban women living in Uasin Gushy County and to identify factors that functions as barriers to the utilization of cervical cancer screening practices among women living in Uasin Gishu County. The study adopted a cross sectional research design that applied both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection including combination of interviews and questionnaires. Since cervical cancer affects only women, the study took as its target population women. Therefore, the study population comprised of women aged between 18 and 55 years with different social, economic and ethnic backgrounds and resided in both urban and rural areas Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. The finding of the study confirmed that many women living in Uasin Gishu County, Kenya had heard about cervical cancer yet the majority of the women had a poor knowledge in many characteristics of cervical cancer. Disparity was also observed in the knowledge of cervical cancer by the women. In view of the knowledge discrepancy about cervical cancer in the women, there is need for the Ministry of Health in Kenya to strengthen training programs and in-service education so that nurses and other health workers update their knowledge of cervical cancer and screening so that they circulate the same type of information. There is need for massive awareness on cervical cancer prevention by all community and government structures with Civil Society Organizations and local governments in the affected areas taking lead is needed at all levels; this has to include highlighting issues and effects of early marriages and early pregnancies as these predispose young girls to cervical cancer. Health workers need to use every health service / visit opportunity to provide information to women about cervical cancer.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine contributing factors in women's use of cervical screening and to promote cervical health and screening awareness for young and/or vulnerable women in Prince George, B.C. The project was a community-based participatory research project that took place over a six-month period and organized in three stages, including: 1) using questionnaires with women in the community to try to better understand women's lives and lived experiences, 2) facilitating health groups for four months to build deeper relationships with women in the community and, 3) offering two community workshops to promote cervical health and screening. The objectives of the first two stages were to examine women's experiences with health services, and understand their personal her/stories and various health determinants that impacted them. The objective of the stage three was to evaluate how awareness about sexual health topics (i.e., the human papillomavirus (HPV), and cervical health/screening) changed as a result of arts-based and peer-driven interventions. Results from this study indicated that social determinants such as finances and education play an important role in women's awareness about, access to, and use of cervical screening services. Further to this, her/stories of victimization, gendered feelings, feelings of disempowerment, and life circumstances also significantly influenced women's comfort levels with, access to, and use of cervical cancer screening services in Prince George, B.C. --P. iii.

Book Epidemiologic Studies in Cancer Prevention and Screening

Download or read book Epidemiologic Studies in Cancer Prevention and Screening written by Anthony B. Miller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epidemiologic Studies in Cancer Prevention and Screening is the first comprehensive overview of the evidence base for both cancer prevention and screening. This book is directed to the many professionals in government, academia, public health and health care who need up to date information on the potential for reducing the impact of cancer, including physicians, nurses, epidemiologists, and research scientists. The main aim of the book is to provide a realistic appraisal of the evidence for both cancer prevention and cancer screening. In addition, the book provides an accounting of the extent programs based on available knowledge have impacted populations. It does this through: 1. Presentation of a rigorous and realistic evaluation of the evidence for population-based interventions in prevention of and screening for cancer, with particular relevance to those believed to be applicable now, or on the cusp of application 2. Evaluation of the relative contributions of prevention and screening 3. Discussion of how, within the health systems with which the authors are familiar, prevention and screening for cancer can be enhanced. Overview of the evidence base for cancer prevention and screening, as demonstrated in Epidemiologic Studies in Cancer Prevention and Screening, is critically important given current debates within the scientific community. Of the five components of cancer control, prevention, early detection (including screening) treatment, rehabilitation and palliative care, prevention is regarded as the most important. Yet the knowledge available to prevent many cancers is incomplete, and even if we know the main causal factors for a cancer, we often lack the understanding to put this knowledge into effect. Further, with the long natural history of most cancers, it could take many years to make an appreciable impact upon the incidence of the cancer. Because of these facts, many have come to believe that screening has the most potential for reduction of the burden of cancer. Yet, through trying to apply the knowledge gained on screening for cancer, the scientific community has recognized that screening can have major disadvantages and achieve little at substantial cost. This reduces the resources that are potentially available both for prevention and for treatment.

This publication is based on a comprehensive consultation undertaken by WHO in 2001, involving leading experts in the field of cancer epidemiology, screening and treatment. It focuses on the current situation in low and middle income countries, discusses the efficacy of screening methods available, and assesses potential future developments.

Book Cervical cancer screening in rural Tanzania

Download or read book Cervical cancer screening in rural Tanzania written by Shangwe Kiliaki and published by . This book was released on with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healthcare is complex, ever-changing, and unpredictable, and the healthcare system in Tanzania is susceptible to such complexities. As one of the poorest countries in the world, with approximately 75 percent of the 50,000,000 people residing in rural areas, increasing access to health services in remote regions is crucial. The leading cause of death among women is cervical cancer in Tanzania. This is due to limited preventive health services such as cancer screening programs, shortage of healthcare facilities in rural areas, vaccination programs for HPV, and simple lack of cervical cancer awareness in rural communities. As a starting point, a cervical cancer awareness and screening event was hosted in Iringa, Tanzania. The goal of this weeklong event was to screen at least 50 women free of charge, provide education about cervical cancer through half hour information sessions, and raise awareness about cervical cancer through the distribution of t-shirts and tote bags specifically designed and worded to encourage women to get screened. After the event, a total of 106 women were screened, 50 t-shirts were distributed as well as 50 tote bags. To continue the fight against cervical cancer, an NGO (Non Government Organization) called Mama Na Mwana Tanzania has been established. Mama Na Mwana will focus on establishing women's health clinics in rural Tanzania and offering cervical cancer awareness and educational programs through seminars and radio broadcasting.

Book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control

Download or read book Comprehensive Cervical Cancer Control written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gives a broad vision of what a comprehensive approach to cervical cancer prevention and control means. In particular, it outlines the complementary strategies for comprehensive cervical cancer prevention and control, and highlights the need for collaboration across programs, organizations and partners. This new guide updates the 2006 edition and includes the recent promising developments in technologies and strategies that can address the gaps between the needs for and availability of services for cervical cancer prevention and control. In the last few years, there has been an emergence of ground-breaking new strategies in cervical cancer prevention and control. Because such strategies require evidence-based evaluation for decision-making in clinical practice and program planning, a World Health Organization (WHO) Steering Committee and a group of invited experts met in Geneva, Switzerland, in September 2010, to ensure that the WHO's guidance on cervical cancer continues to encompass all the relevant technologies and strategies. This edition of the guide has two new chapters: Chapter 2: Essentials for cervical cancer prevention and control programs and Chapter 4: HPV vaccination. One chapter has been newly organized: Chapter 5: Screening and treatment of cervical pre-cancer. All other chapters have been thoroughly updated and edited as needed. This guide aims to assist those responsible for providing services aimed at reducing the burden of cervical cancer on women, their communities and health systems. It focuses on the knowledge, best practices and communication skills needed by health-care providers working at community and primary and secondary levels of care to offer quality services for prevention, screening, treatment and palliative care for cervical cancer: the full continuum of care. The guide is intended primarily for health-care providers in health centers and district hospitals who deal with women's health and/or adolescent's health, but it may also be of interest to community-based and tertiary-level providers. Providers and managers at the sub-national level whose responsibilities may include program planning would be interested in Chapter 2 on program essentials, which covers implementation, monitoring and evaluating, and/or supervising and training other health-care providers. National-level decision-makers will find updated evidence-based information in this guide on what works in cervical cancer prevention and control programs, which may be of use as a basis for updating their own guidelines and protocols.

Book Women s Health Research

  • Publisher : National Academies Press

Download or read book Women s Health Research written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-27 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though slightly over half of the U.S. population is female, medical research historically has neglected the health needs of women. However, over the past two decades, there have been major changes in government support of women's health research-in policies, regulations, and the organization of research efforts. To assess the impact of these changes, Congress directed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to ask the IOM to examine what has been learned from that research and how well it has been put into practice as well as communicated to both providers and women. Women's Health Research finds that women's health research has contributed to significant progress over the past 20 years in lessening the burden of disease and reducing deaths from some conditions, while other conditions have seen only moderate change or even little or no change. Gaps remain, both in research areas and in the application of results to benefit women in general and across multiple population groups. Given the many and significant roles women play in our society, maintaining support for women's health research and enhancing its impact are not only in the interest of women, they are in the interest of us all.
