Book Of Women and Flowers Women Empowerment in Pil es Brazil

Download or read book Of Women and Flowers Women Empowerment in Pil es Brazil written by Bruna Maria Do Rego Troccoli and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contexts of poverty, underdevelopment, patriarchy and capitalism highlight serious damages that gender inequality causes on the lives of rural women in the Third World. Only 30% of these women have jobs formal or informal , while this percentage is as high as 60% for men (UNDP, 2011). A portrait of Brazilian women in numbers translates, even if superficially, a gender struggle fuelled by social norms that subjugate supposedly fair and gender-sensitive legal norms there, women will need another 95 years before achieving gender equality (WEF, 2016). The idiographic approach underlying this investigation considers that one can only begin to capture aspects of a social reality through the knowledge provided, firsthand, by context itself and people immersed in it. Therefore, participant observation and eighteen interviews were conducted in order to debate whether and to what extent working at a particular women-headed cooperative empowered rural women members in three different dimensions, considering changes in capabilities and functionings. The case study of Cooperativa dos Floricultures do Estado da Paraíba (COFEP) departs from an analytical framework that include four main potential benefits of cooperatives and its impact on three different empowerment domains namely, economic, gender and social. It proved useful to assessing empowerment of members and non-members, although considering the latter do not enjoy the same set of benefits through the cooperatives channel. A comparison between both groups and their arguments guides the investigation of the research question. Results show that achieving financial autonomy through employment at COFEP allowed members to escape extreme poverty, improve mental wellbeing and decision-making power within the household, decrease domestic violence and develop a better notion of self-worth. Such economic empowerment made members relatively well-off, compared to their previous experience of poverty, in which most families in that community are still trapped. However, the high price the majority pays for it consists of their accumulating paid and unpaid work responsibilities. Additionally, within the cooperative these women established a reliable support network with some expanding theirs beyond it. The most problematic capability concerns women having knowledge of their rights and confidence to act upon its violation. Indeed, discourses of both groups revealed disbelief in their ability to react to the violation of rights so common to their social class (e.g., poor public health assistance). Notwithstanding, this investigation concluded relational poverty and patriarchal social norms are the main limiting factors to women\`s empowerment. Durable effects of poverty, such as low levels of education, prevent these women from exercising active citizenship or being able to choose between a wider range of employment opportunities. Patriarchal social norms remain a struggle at all levels household, community and country. Given this, it becomes clear that preserving, and reinventing, their membership at COFEP is paramount to develop their newfound empowerment. Recommendations for members focus on the need to re-work their statute and establish regular leadership alternation; re-direct investments towards consultancy and other strategic measures to counter agronomic and financial problems; re-assess the relevancy of their membership beyond livelihood and contribute to their communities by promoting gender equality and social norms through grassroots initiatives. For institutional partners, it remains necessary highlighting the need for gender-sensitive interventions tailored to womens needs and constraints. Hence, financial investments and technical training must be combined with awareness-raising guidance that involve committed professionals and involves members and their partners, as well as others in the community.

Book Geoheritage and Geotourism

Download or read book Geoheritage and Geotourism written by Thomas A. Hose and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2016 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essays on aspects of the natural world, its heritage, and how best to preserve it. Europe's engagement from the late sixteenth century onwards in scientific Earth science inquiry has generated numerous and varied collections of minerals, rocks, and fossils, together with their associated archives, artworks and publications, forming a rich cultural geoheritage held in major private and especially royal and aristocratic collections, museums, universities, archives and libraries. The mines, quarries, geological structures, landforms, minerals, rocks and fossils - or geodiversity - that underpin these collections populate past and present-day Earth science literature. However, for too long their scientific, historic and cultural significance was not universally recognised and generally they were not accorded adequate resources and protection - or geoconservation. Hence, geotourism was developed in the 1990s to raise public awareness of Europe's geoheritage and geodiversity and to promote itsgeoconservation; the volume's theoretical essays and case studies examine these four core geoelements and provide a timely introduction for anyone interested in natural history museums, countryside management, and landscape-basedtourism. Dr Thomas A. Hose is an Honorary Research Associate in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol. He has pioneered the recognition of and research into geotourism, and is the author of the world's first doctoral thesis on the subject. Contributors: Kevin Crawford, Peter Davis, John E. Gordon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to identify geotourism and geoparks as gateways to socio-cultural, socio-environmental, and socio-economic sustainability in rural areas. At present, geotourism is a new movement helping travelers to increase their knowledge about natural resources, the cultural identities of host communities, and ways of preserving them. The 'emerging tourism' niche of geotourism is still at an early stage of commercial development in most countries, and geoparks as a sustainable development model for protected areas are pioneers in the development of geotourism marketing. The establishment of the European Geoparks Network and the Global Geoparks Network are positive steps toward the preservation and presentation of geo-heritage as a new tourist attraction. Geoparks and Geotourism provides an opportunity for students, professionals, and authorities of geoparks to take advantage of emerging techniques to create new products, facilities, services, technologies, and management practices for geoparks in the future. Consequently, the book is a paradigm for geoparks who want to come under the umbrella of the Global Geoparks Network. The numerous examples provided of geoparks currently attracting travelers may contribute to the creation of innovative strategies for sustainability and geoconservation in rural areas around the world.

Book States of Grace

Download or read book States of Grace written by Patrícia I. Vieira and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides in-depth analyses of key moments in Brazilian utopianism, including theological-political, matriarchal, environmental, and work-free utopias. States of Grace offers a novel approach to the study of Brazilian culture through the lens of utopianism. Patrícia I. Vieira explores religious and political writings, journalistic texts, sociological studies, and literary works that portray Brazil as a utopian “land of the future,” where dreams of a coming messianic age and of social and political emancipation would come true. The book discusses crucial utopian moments such as the theological-political utopia proposed by Jesuit Priest Antônio Vieira; matriarchal utopias, like the egalitarian society of the Amazons; work-free utopias that abolished the boundaries separating toil and play; and ecological utopias, where humans and nonhumans coexist harmoniously. The uniqueness of the book’s approach lies in rethinking the link between messianic and utopian texts, as well as the alliances forged between progressive religious, socioeconomic, political, and ecological ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive cultural history of Brazil to be written in English, Brazil Imagined: 1500 to the Present captures the role of the artistic imaginary in shaping Brazil's national identity. Analyzing representations of Brazil throughout the world, this ambitious survey demonstrates the ways in which life in one of the world's largest nations has been conceived and revised in visual arts, literature, film, and a variety of other media. Beginning with the first explorations of Brazil by the Portuguese, Darlene J. Sadlier incorporates extensive source material, including paintings, historiographies, letters, poetry, novels, architecture, and mass media to trace the nation's shifting sense of its own history. Topics include the oscillating themes of Edenic and cannibal encounters, Dutch representations of Brazil, regal constructs, the literary imaginary, Modernist utopias, "good neighbor" protocols, and filmmakers' revolutionary and dystopian images of Brazil. A magnificent panoramic study of race, imperialism, natural resources, and other themes in the Brazilian experience, this landmark work is a boon to the field.

Book Narrative Space and Time

Download or read book Narrative Space and Time written by Elana Gomel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space is a central topic in cultural and narrative theory today, although in most cases theory assumes Newtonian absolute space. However, the idea of a universal homogeneous space is now obsolete. Black holes, multiple dimensions, quantum entanglement, and spatio-temporal distortions of relativity have passed into culture at large. This book examines whether narrative can be used to represent these "impossible" spaces. Impossible topologies abound in ancient mythologies, from the Australian Aborigines’ "dream-time" to the multiple-layer universe of the Sumerians. More recently, from Alice’s adventures in Wonderland to contemporary science fiction’s obsession with black holes and quantum paradoxes, counter-intuitive spaces are a prominent feature of modern and postmodern narrative. With the rise and popularization of science fiction, the inventiveness and variety of impossible narrative spaces explodes. The author analyses the narrative techniques used to represent such spaces alongside their cultural significance. Each chapter connects narrative deformation of space with historical problematic of time, and demonstrates the cognitive and perceptual primacy of narrative in representing, imagining and apprehending new forms of space and time. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of the connection between narratology, cultural theory, science fiction, and studies of place.

Download or read book Liquid Evil written by Zygmunt Bauman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing new about evil; it has been with us since time immemorial. But there is something new about the kind of evil that characterizes our contemporary liquid-modern world. The evil that characterized earlier forms of solid modernity was concentrated in the hands of states claiming monopolies on the means of coercion and using the means at their disposal to pursue their ends ends that were at times horrifically brutal and barbaric. In our contemporary liquid-modern societies, by contrast, evil has become altogether more pervasive and at the same time less visible. Liquid evil hides in the seams of the canvass woven daily by the liquid-modern mode of human interaction and commerce, conceals itself in the very tissue of human cohabitation and in the course of its routine and day-to-day reproduction. Evil lurks in the countless black holes of a thoroughly deregulated and privatized social space in which cutthroat competition and mutual estrangement have replaced cooperation and solidarity, while forceful individualization erodes the adhesive power of inter-human bonds. In its present form evil is hard to spot, unmask and resist. It seduces us by its ordinariness and then jumps out without warning, striking seemingly at random. The result is a social world that is comparable to a minefield: we know it is full of explosives and that explosions will happen sooner or later but we have no idea when and where they will occur. In this new book, the sequel to their acclaimed work Moral Blindness Zygmunt Bauman and Leonidas Donskis guide the reader through this new terrain in which evil has become both more ordinary and more insidious, threatening to strip humanity of its dreams, alternative projects and powers of dissent at the very time when they are needed most.

Book Brazil on Screen

  • Author : Lúcia Nagib
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2007-07-30
  • ISBN : 0857710982

Download or read book Brazil on Screen written by Lúcia Nagib and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two periods of Brazilian film history are particularly notable for their artistic momentum: the Cinema Novo movement of the 1960s and early '70s, and the film revival from the mid 1990s onwards. What makes them especially strong, this book argues, is their utopian impulse. By adopting Utopia as a theme, as well as a method of film analysis, Lucia Nagib unveils, organises and interprets a fascinating wealth of recurrent images, which are a bridge between a cinema strongly concerned with the national project and another informed by global culture. Outstanding recent films, such as "Central Station", "Perfumed Ball", "Hans Staden", "Orfeu", "City of God" and "The Trespasser", are illuminated by Nagib's sharp analysis, which detects utopian, anti-utopian and even dystopian impulses in them. They are at once representatives of a political arena in constant struggle against underdevelopment and legitimate (as well as critical) heirs of past cinematic traditions. Throwing new light on a large selection of Cinema Novo and contemporary films, this book thus presents a national cinema that rejects the end of history and of film history, while benefiting from, and contributing to, a new transnational aesthetics.
