Book excerpt: Since the independence of Nigeria, women heritage of constructive participation in and contributions to societal development continued in their various ascribed and achieved roles to contribute to development in Nigeria. However, development since independence has led to even more marginalization of women especially in the political sphere. After independence, mass political action by women dwindled. The acrimonious politics of the post-independence era, the bitter rivalries of the ethnic-based and personality dominated political parties and the paternalistic nature of their organization became detrimental to women participation. While some women continued to play important roles in the women wings of the major political parties and a few won elections to the different Houses of State Assemblies, women have been hemmed in by traditional and cultural constraints and barriers. Despite the political setback experienced at National and State levels, women political relevance increased at community level. During the various military regimes that swept through the Nigerian State after independence, women continued to participate in different organizations set-up by the wives of the Heads of State. All these organizations were formed to empower the women economically and politically. Therefore, the author seeks to examine women political participation and decision-making in Nigeria since independence. This is due to the fact that more Nigerian women today have come to view discrimination in politics as unjust but remediable.

Through the Gender Lens: A Century of Social and Political Development in Nigeria looks at how colonialism has enabled or hindered the roles of the state in promoting inclusive development in general, and gender equality, in particular, in the process of nation building. In this edited volume, scholars analyze a host of policies, strategies and programs, as well as empirical evidence, to expose how types of governance — from direct colonial rule in the country from 1914, through her independence in 1960, a Republic in 1963, and to different post-independence governance periods — have influenced gender relations, and the impacts of these on Nigerian women. Diverse sectoral perspectives from education, health, culture, environment, and especially politics, are presented to explain the level of attainment (or otherwise) of gender equality and the implications for Nigeria’s road to sustainable development. The emphasis on the role of the state in development particularly indicts the social and political domains of governance. Hence, the main focus of inquiry in the volume. In its twelve chapters, the authors analyze available data and other information to draw relevant conclusions, identify lessons of experience, including from some cross-country comparisons, and make concrete recommendations for more gender-inclusive systems of governance in the next century of Nigeria’s nationhood.

However, there is an assumption on men’s domination of political parties and the women are solely in the parties as cheerleaders. Studies exist on women participation in politics in Ekiti State, extant literature have not addressed the functions of women in political parties in Ekiti State. Therefore, the aim of this study is to examine the functions of women in political parties in Ekiti State. It also aimed at investigating women access to empowerment within the political parties in Ekiti State. The study adopted a qualitative method research design in which an in-depth interview was combined with documentary evidence. Primary data were sourced using interview and focus group while secondary data was sourced from documents such as the Nigeria constitution, Independent national commission and relevant documents from the political party’s websites. Through purposive and snowball sampling techniques, four political parties were selected and using a semi-structured interview, a total number of 13 people within the four political parties were interviewed and 2 Focus Group within the four political parties. The study also implored relevant literatures and theory; the study implored liberal feminism. Findings showed that women in political parties in Ekiti States perform roles such as spiritual, mobilizing and executive roles. Women functions in political parties are both within and outside the parties. Furthermore, the status of women in political parties in Ado Ekiti has not reflected most of the global laws and declaration on women. The result of the study showed that decision making roles are occupied by mostly men and has experienced a slight increase in the present administration. It also revealed that women have access to financial, economic and material resources and these resources are given based on individual choices. Lastly, women have access to human capacity, skill and financial empowerment yet it varies in the four political parties.

Book excerpt: The political marginalization of women in the Habe States of northern Nigeria began with the introduction of Islam in the 11th century and was virtually completed by the Fulani conquest of the Habe States in the 19th century (Calloway 1987:11-18). Formal British rule, imposed early in the 20th century, reinforced this trend in southern Nigeria by excluding women from many of their diverse and substantial political roles. Post-independence Nigerian governments have attempted to reverse this situation by including a limited number of women in government. But this tokenism has neither met the need for sexual equality of representation in government nor ensured stability through a diversified distribution of power. Progressive but limited action is being taken, as more serious thought is given to the problem of eliminating the gender biases of the Nigerian political system.

In relation to political parties in particular, the voice of women in decision-making remains insufficient, and, in some cases, is nonexistent. This report is based on the findings of a two-year project implemented by International IDEA, aimed at analyzing the commitments of political parties to gender equality in 33 countries in Africa. One of the key findings from this research is that, although political parties’ constitutions and manifestos contain general gender equality commitments, their utility is limited by the lack of concrete measures to ensure that commitments are translated into effective actions and outcomes.
