Book Women in the Unorganized Sector of India

Download or read book Women in the Unorganized Sector of India written by Rameshwari Pandya and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the final report of India's National Commission for Enterprises in the Unorganized Sector, released in April 2009, workers in the unorganized (or informal) sector constitute more than 93 percent of the total workforce of India. Unorganized sector workers are those who do not have any job security, income security, or social security. The problems that confront women workers in the unorganized sector deserve special emphasis in view of their marginalized position. A considerable portion of their time is consumed by both socially productive labor and reproductive labor. This is what is called the double burden of work that distinguishes women from men. Gender division in labor has implications for the wages earned, permanency in the job, and the possibilities for upward mobility in the industry. The overall picture that emerges is one of greater disadvantage for women workers, in particular, those living in rural areas, as well as those in scheduled caste/scheduled tribes. This book examines the problems for women in the unorganized sector of India. The government's policies and programs that address these problems are discussed. The book also includes a case study of women in the embroidery industry of Surat City of the state of Gujarat.

In the unorganized sector, those enterprises and employments are involved which are unregistered under any legal provision. This Book deals with the women workers in the unorganized sector of the economy in India. The term ‘unorganized’ is often used in the Indian context to refer to the vast numbers of women and men engaged in different forms of employment. These forms include home-based work, self-employment in household enterprises, small units, on land as agricultural workers, labour on construction sites, domestic work, and many other forms of casual or temporary employment. The unorganized sector is physically more visible in India. Female workers form the largest segment of India’s unorganized workforce. 91% of women workers in the unorganized sector are rendering their services. They work in unorganized sectors for low wages due to low level of skills, illiteracy, ignorance and surplus labour and thus face a high level of exploitation. The social and economic profile of female workers is greatly affected by the nature of the industrial sector where they work. This book focuses on presenting the real picture of the current conditions of women workers in all the tehsils of the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, who are involved in four kinds of unorganized occupations i.e., domestic, vendors, construction and self-employment.. This book throws light on their role, nature of work, living standards, vulnerability and the problems which they are facing frequently in unorganized sector. And last, suggestions given by authors for their welfare.

This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the core problems of occupational health, safety and well-being of workers in the informal sector in developing countries, where it accounts for most of the rural labour force and a substantial percentage of the urban labour force. The sector is characterised by low incomes, unstable employment and lack of protection in the form of legislation/policies or trade unions. Though some health and problem-solving measures have been introduced, a focused academic effort to address the problems confronting workers in the unorganised sector, or informal economy, is lacking. The book evaluates workers’ physical and mental health in the context of labour migration, social inclusion of minorities and the differently abled, provisions for women workers, demonetisation, occupational safety for hazardous work, and in connection with various areas of informal work, e.g. agriculture, construction, transportation, sanitation, tanning, the tobacco industry, powerloom industry, surrogacy, and self-employment. It provides a well-rounded description of an analytical reflection on the challenges these workers face and focuses on social policy changes to help alleviate them. Accordingly, it offers a valuable asset for researchers and students interested in development studies, the sociology of work, health and labour economics, public health, and social work.

Book Organizing Women Workers in the Informal Economy

Download or read book Organizing Women Workers in the Informal Economy written by Naila Kabeer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women as a group have often been divided by a number of intersecting inequalities: class, race, ethnicity, caste. As individuals - often isolated in reproductive or other home-based work - their weapons of resistance have tended to be restricted to the traditional weapons of the weak: hidden subversions and individualised struggles. Organizing Women Workers in the Informal Economy explores the emergence of an alternative repertoire among women working in the growing informal sectors of the global South: the weapons of organization and mobilization. This crucial book offers vibrant accounts of how women working as farm workers, sex workers, domestic workers, waste pickers, fisheries workers and migrant factory workers have organized for collective action. What gives these precarious workers the impetus and courage to take up these steps? What resources do they draw on in order to transcend their structurally disadvantaged position within the economy? And what continues to hamper their efforts to gain social recognition for themselves as women, as workers and as citizens? With first-hand accounts from authors closely involved in emerging organizations, this collection documents how women workers have come together to carve out new identities for themselves, define what matters to them, and develop collective strategies of resistance and struggle.

Book Closing Gender Gaps in India Does Increasing Womens Access to Finance Help

Download or read book Closing Gender Gaps in India Does Increasing Womens Access to Finance Help written by Purva Khera and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender gaps in womens’ economic opportunities—labor market and entrepreneurship—have remained high in India. Lack of adequate collateral limits women entrepreneurs’ ability to access formal finance, leaving them to rely on informal sources, constraining their growth. A small-open economy DSGE model is built to investigate the long-run macroeconomic impacts from closing gender gaps in financial access. Results suggest that an increase in women entrepreneurs access to formal credit results in higher female entrepreneurship and employment, which boosts India’s output by 1.6 percent. However, regulations and gender-specific constraints in the labor market limit potential gains as females’ access to quality jobs in the formal sector remains restricted. The paper shows that the factors influencing the number of females are different from those influencing the share of females in formal economic activity. Combining gender-targeted financial inclusion policies with policies that lower constraints on formal sector employment could boost India’s output by 6.8 percent.
