Book Bring Me Men Brought Women

Download or read book Bring Me Men Brought Women written by Kathleen Utley Kornahrens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 28, 1976, into the all-male bastion of the United States Air Force Academy 157 women stepped, challenging the slogan over the entrance ramp that read "Bring Me Men." These women inspired an upheaval of change in this tradition-bound military school. Their journey was one of survival in a male-dominated environment, where they struggled to find balance on a seesaw of ingrained gender discrimination and undesired special privileges. This book tells the story of the first female cadets in the United States Air Force Academy, and their fight to make a permanent place for themselves there. Chapters explore their struggle to be accepted, the difficulties of the training environment, the camaraderie and conflict with men and the hardships and joys of those who marched in the ranks of that first co-ed class.

Download or read book 37 Words written by Sherry Boschert and published by The New Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of the federal legislation that prohibits sex discrimination in education, published on the fiftieth anniversary of Title IX “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance.” —Title IX’s first thirty-seven words By prohibiting sex discrimination in federally funded education, the 1972 legislation popularly known as Title IX profoundly changed the lives of women and girls in the United States, accelerating a movement for equal education in classrooms, on sports fields, and in all of campus life. 37 Words is the story of Title IX. Filled with rich characters—from Bernice Resnick Sandler, an early organizer for the law, to her trans grandchild—the story of Title IX is a legislative and legal drama with conflicts over regulations and challenges to the law. It’s also a human story about women denied opportunities, students struggling for an education free from sexual harassment, and activists defying sexist discrimination. These intersecting narratives of women seeking an education, playing sports, and wanting protection from sexual harassment and assault map gains and setbacks for feminism in the last fifty years and show how some women benefit more than others. Award-winning journalist Sherry Boschert beautifully explores the gripping history of Title IX through the gutsy people behind it. In the tradition of the acclaimed documentary She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry, 37 Words offers a crucial playbook for anyone who wants to understand how we got here and who is horrified by current attacks on women’s rights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the complex history and legacy of elite wives, concubines, and daughters of warlords in twentieth-century China. In Women and Their Warlords, historian Kate Merkel-Hess examines the lives and personalities of the female relatives of the military rulers who governed regions of China from 1916 to 1949. Posing for candid photographs and sitting for interviews, these women did not merely advance male rulers’ agendas. They advocated for social and political changes, gave voice to feminist ideas, and shaped how the public perceived them. As the first publicly political partners in modern China, the wives and concubines of Republican-era warlords changed how people viewed elite women’s engagement in politics. Drawing on popular media sources, including magazine profiles and gossip column items, Merkel-Hess draws unexpected connections between militarism, domestic life, and state power in this insightful new account of gender and authority in twentieth-century China.

Book My Fair Ladies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Julie Wosk
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2015-07-28
  • ISBN : 0813575206
  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book My Fair Ladies written by Julie Wosk and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fantasy of a male creator constructing his perfect woman dates back to the Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea. Yet as technology has advanced over the past century, the figure of the lifelike manmade woman has become nearly ubiquitous, popping up in everything from Bride of Frankenstein to Weird Science to The Stepford Wives. Now Julie Wosk takes us on a fascinating tour through this bevy of artificial women, revealing the array of cultural fantasies and fears they embody. My Fair Ladies considers how female automatons have been represented as objects of desire in fiction and how “living dolls” have been manufactured as real-world fetish objects. But it also examines the many works in which the “perfect” woman turns out to be artificial—a robot or doll—and thus becomes a source of uncanny horror. Finally, Wosk introduces us to a variety of female artists, writers, and filmmakers—from Cindy Sherman to Shelley Jackson to Zoe Kazan—who have cleverly crafted their own images of simulated women. Anything but dry, My Fair Ladies draws upon Wosk’s own experiences as a young female Playboy copywriter and as a child of the “feminine mystique” era to show how images of the artificial woman have loomed large over real women’s lives. Lavishly illustrated with film stills, artwork, and vintage advertisements, this book offers a fresh look at familiar myths about gender, technology, and artistic creation.

Book Ten Things I Still Hate About Those Women

Download or read book Ten Things I Still Hate About Those Women written by Allene E. Swienckowski and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-07 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Merely Words of Inspiration" was written because of an awakening of my spiritual nature, which inspired me. I would hear different phrases during the day at work, on television, or just having a casual conversation during the day. I was given an idea and began to write such as the following article: "Tell it Like It Is" or "Sugarcoated". Jesus never sugarcoated anything. He always told the truth, the whole truth. When we do not tell it like it is, we are doing the work of the adversary. He is the author of confusion, which is his truth. The book was also written to enhance our spiritual awareness. It was written to let you see that the everyday phrases, such as another article titled "Can You Hear Me Now?", can be inspirational in the right circumstances. Here is an insert from the following article: "Have we ever thought about Jesus saying, "Can You Hear Me Now?" Why can't we hear Him? Is it because we are listening to the world and not for His voice? It is written, "I am the Good Shepherd, and I know my sheep, and am known of mine. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they will hear my voice: and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd"(John 10:14, 16). This is something to get excited about, being in heaven with our Lord and Savior. Have a Blessed Day

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last third of the twentieth century, white supremacists moved, both literally and in the collective imagination, from midnight rides through Mississippi to broadband-wired cabins in Montana. But while rural Montana may be on the geographical fringe of the country, white supremacist groups were not pushed there, and they are far from "fringe elements" of society, as many Americans would like to believe. Evelyn Schlatter's startling analysis describes how many of the new white supremacist groups in the West have co-opted the region's mythology and environment based on longstanding beliefs about American character and Manifest Destiny to shape an organic, home-grown movement. Dissatisfied with the urbanized, culturally progressive coasts, disenfranchised by affirmative action and immigration, white supremacists have found new hope in the old ideal of the West as a land of opportunity waiting to be settled by self-reliant traditional families. Some even envision the region as a potential white homeland. Groups such as Aryan Nations, The Order, and Posse Comitatus use controversial issues such as affirmative action, anti-Semitism, immigration, and religion to create sympathy for their extremist views among mainstream whites—while offering a "solution" in the popular conception of the West as a place of freedom, opportunity, and escape from modern society. Aryan Cowboys exposes the exclusionist message of this "American" ideal, while documenting its dangerous appeal.
