Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 72.89, Egerton University (Faculty of Education and Community Studies), course: Master of Research and Public Policy, language: English, abstract: There has been a great attention by the government of Kenya on women entrepreneurship over the last nine years. Several policies have been enacted that could support the growth and performance of women entrepreneurship in Kenya. The Women Enterprise Fund (WEF) was established in 2007 to assist women in the development of their enterprises. One condition of funding by WEF is that beneficiaries must first undergo capacity building before getting the funds. However, the effects of WEF’s training remains unexplored in Kenya and in particular Thika Sub-County. This study sought to bridge the gap by establishing the effects of WEF’s training on performance of women grocery micro-entrepreneurs in Thika Sub-County in Kenya. The study examined the effects of WEF’s training on the indicators of performance that is, sales, profit, labour and capital. It focused on four specific objectives to: identify the effects of WEF’s training on profits, sales, labour and capital among women grocery micro-entrepreneurs. A cross-sectional descriptive survey research design was used. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling, since it produced the most productive sample to test the research hypotheses. A sample size of 111 women entrepreneurs was used out of a population of 371 women entrepreneurs. Data was collected using structured questionnaires from the respondents. The study was guided by the human capital theory. Paired t-test and ordinate logistic regression were used to analyze quantitative data collected at 5% significance level with the help of STATA software. Validity of the instruments was achieved through expert judgement of the research supervisors and WEF’s officials. Reliability was tested by subjecting the instruments to a pilot study through the test-retest technique. The study established that the type of training had significant effect on the performance of women grocery micro-entrepreneurs. While the frequency of training had no significant effect on the sales of women grocery micro-entrepreneurs. From the study results, the researcher recommends for the performance of women micro-entrepreneurs to improve drastically WEF has to focus more on providing quality training especially market access skills. It is therefore, hoped that the outcomes and recommendations of this study will be of help to WEF and other women entrepreneurship stakeholders to address the performance challenges in Thika Sub-County and the nation at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Women s Enterprise Fund was launched in 2006 to benefit women aged above 18 years with the purpose of helping them improve their standard of living through investment in various projects. As a form of microfinance it is intended to reach those in the informal sector and who have problems accessing loans from major commercial banks. However four years down the line limited evidence can be seen to verify if the fund is addressing the specific needs of women entrepreneurs. This study explored influence of the national women enterprise fund on women entrepreneurship in Kisumu East District, Western Kenya, Nyanza province. Specifically the study established the level of awareness and accessibility to the fund, identified strategies used for capacity building and mobilization of the beneficiaries of the fund and their institutions and assessed its influence on the beneficiaries, their households and enterprises. The findings of this study may in addition to contributing to knowledge of the women enterprise fund, benefit policy makers and enhance national micro-finance policy planning for women as a strategy to sustained development.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motive behind this study was to investigate the factors affecting women entrepreneurship development and empowerment in Kenya. The objectives of this study was to determine the influence of access to finance with regards to women development and empowerment in Kenya, to determine the influence of access to markets for women development and empowerment in Kenya as well as determining the influence of access to training and women development and empowerment in Kenya. Descriptive research design was used to assess the factors affecting women entrepreneurship development and empowerment. The target population for this study is 60 women entrepreneurs working in 6 sectors of the economy. The sectors are; textile, food and beverage, agriculture, beauty, manufacturing and construction. The study used stratified sampling technique in sampling respondents. Secondary data was collected using semi-structured questionnaires with close-ended questions. Primary data was collected from women entrepreneurs owning and operating small and medium enterprises in Nairobi County Kenya. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the joint relationship between independent and dependent variables. The data was analysed using simple descriptive statistics including ranges, percentages, frequencies and mode. The data collected and analysed was presented in the form of tables and graphs. The research question on access to finance established that women entrepreneurs did not access funds from the Government development fund or the financial institutions that is both commercial and micro instead choosing to borrow from friends and self help groups. On access to markets the study established that almost all Kenyan women entrepreneurs lack the knowledge to be able to penetrate international markets with half the respondents indicating that women entrepreneurs did not have knowledge of both local and international markets. With regards to training the study identified that women entrepreneurs were not trained on customer and communication skills due to poor coordination from relevant government authorities tasked with the job of training them. From the study it was concluded that the women entrepreneurship sector is one of the key drivers of the economy among the developing countries of the world. Therefore for the women entrepreneurs to prosper, it is the responsibility of the Government to develop appropriate initiatives to promote SME sector. Training of SMEs, financial accessibility and market accessibility will revolutionalise the SME sector and therefore promote social economic developments in Kenya. From the findings of the study it is recommended that the Government should review policies of Commercial Banks through the Central Bank of Kenya to enable SMEs to access loans easily. The Government should market SME?s produce abroad through the Export Council. The government in partnership with other stakeholders such as the Kenya Private Sector Alliance and International Labour Organization ought to invest in training SME?s on market analysis and customer care management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together new household and enterprise data from 41 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa to inform policy makers and practitioners on ways to expand women entrepreneurs’ economic opportunities. Sub-Saharan Africa boasts the highest share of women entrepreneurs, but they are disproportionately concentrated among the self-employed rather than employers. Relative to men, women are pursuing lower opportunity activities, with their enterprises more likely to be smaller, informal, and in low value-added lines of business. The challenge in expanding opportunities is not helping more women become entrepreneurs but enabling them to shift to higher return activities. A central question addressed in the book is what explains the gender sorting in the types of enterprises that women and men run? The analysis shows that many Sub-Saharan countries present a challenging environment for women. Four key areas of the agenda for expanding women’s economic opportunities in Africa are analyzed: strengthening women’s property rights and their ability to control assets; improving women’s access to finance; building human capital in business skills and networks; and strengthening women’s voices in business environment reform. These areas are important both because they have wide gender gaps and because they help explain gender differences in entrepreneurial activities. It is particularly striking that while gender gaps in education tend to close with higher incomes, gaps in women’s property rights and in women’s participation in reform processes do not. As simply raising a country’s income is unlikely to be sufficient to give women equal ability to control assets or have greater voice, more proactive steps will be needed. Practical guidelines to move the agenda forward are discussed for each of these key areas.
