Book Power Empowerment and Social Change

Download or read book Power Empowerment and Social Change written by Rosemary McGee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uncovers how power operates around the world, and how it can be resisted or transformed through empowered collective action and social leadership. The stakes have never been higher. Recent years have seen a rapid escalation of inequalities, the rise of new global powers and corporate interests, increasing impunity of human rights violations, suppression of civil society, and a re-shaping of democratic processes by post-truth, populist and nationalist politics. Rather than looking at power through the lenses of agency or structure alone, this book views power and empowerment as complex and multidimensional societal processes, defined by pervasive social norms, conditions, constraints and opportunities. Bridging theory and practice, the book explores real-world applications using a selection of frameworks, tools, case studies, examples, resources and reflections from experience to support actors to analyse their positioning and align themselves with progressive social forces. Compiled with social change practitioners, students and scholars in mind, Power, Empowerment and Social Change is the perfect volume for anyone involved in politics, international development, sociology, human rights and environmental justice who is looking for fresh insights for transforming power in favour of relatively less powerful people.

This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Society is continually moving towards global interaction, and nations often contain citizens of numerous cultures and backgrounds. Bi-culturalism incorporates a higher degree of social inclusion in an effort to bring about social justice and change, and it may prove to be an alternative to the existing dogma of mainstream Europe-based hegemonic bodies of knowledge. The Handbook of Research on Indigenous Knowledge and Bi-Culturalism in a Global Context is a collection of innovative studies on the nature of indigenous bodies’ knowledge that incorporates the sacred or spiritual influence across various countries following World War II, while exploring the difficulties faced as society immerses itself in bi-culturalism. While highlighting topics including bi-cultural teaching, Africology, and education empowerment, this book is ideally designed for academicians, urban planners, sociologists, anthropologists, researchers, and professionals seeking current research on validating the growth of indigenous thinking and ideas.

Book The Vulnerable Empowered Woman

Download or read book The Vulnerable Empowered Woman written by Tasha N. Dubriwny and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The feminist women’s health movement of the 1960s and 1970s is credited with creating significant changes in the healthcare industry and bringing women’s health issues to public attention. Decades later, women’s health issues are more visible than ever before, but that visibility is made possible by a process of depoliticization The Vulnerable Empowered Woman assesses the state of women’s healthcare today by analyzing popular media representations—television, print newspapers, websites, advertisements, blogs, and memoirs—in order to understand the ways in which breast cancer, postpartum depression, and cervical cancer are discussed in American public life. From narratives about prophylactic mastectomies to young girls receiving a vaccine for sexually transmitted disease, the representations of women’s health today form a single restrictive identity: the vulnerable empowered woman. This identity defuses feminist notions of collective empowerment and social change by drawing from both postfeminist and neoliberal ideologies. The woman is vulnerable because of her very femininity and is empowered not to change the world, but to choose from among a limited set of medical treatments. The media’s depiction of the vulnerable empowered woman’s relationship with biomedicine promotes traditional gender roles and affirms women’s unquestioning reliance on medical science for empowerment. The book concludes with a call to repoliticize women’s health through narratives that can help us imagine women—and their relationship to medicine—differently.

Book Women and Power a Short Overview of Social Changes and Women s Empowerment

Download or read book Women and Power a Short Overview of Social Changes and Women s Empowerment written by Zahra Al TIMIMI and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We will also go into some detail about how feminist and egalitarian movements and organizations act towards women's rights. Then we will try to figure out if feminism really means equality for all in conclusion. As it often happens when it comes to similar causes, this situation is constantly developing, practically ever changing. As we are going to explain within this text, the main issue here lays in the current mindset of most people within different social groups, at all levels and from different countries and cultures (female subjects included). Equality between men and women everywhere in the world, it is a fundamental right for everybody, of value to society, for a democracy, for a just and right lifestyle. It is necessary that the people of the world would start to embrace this not only because laws force them, but also because they respect the idea on a political, social, and cultural level.

Download or read book Women s Rights and Social Change written by Leslie Armstrong and published by Scientific e-Resources. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's rights are the rights and entitlements claimed for women and girls worldwide, and formed the basis for the women's rights movement in the nineteenth century and feminist movement during the 20th century. In some countries, these rights are institutionalized or supported by law, local custom, and behavior, whereas in others they are ignored and suppressed. They differ from broader notions of human rights through claims of an inherent historical and traditional bias against the exercise of rights by women and girls, in favor of men and boys. Women's Rights and Social Change focuses attention on the way in which women from a number of traditions have been able to bring about change and the manner in which rights have either facilitated or inhibited women's participation in the process of change. In the face of injustice, people band together to work for change, and through their influence, what was once unthinkable becomes common. This book traces the history of the women's rights movement, including the key players, watershed moments, and legislative battles that have driven social change. This book should be of interest to all those interested in gender development and women empowerment and researches and students.

Book Feminism and Social Change A Research Based Approach to Women s Rights

Download or read book Feminism and Social Change A Research Based Approach to Women s Rights written by Dr. Chitra Singh & Dr. Sonika Mathur and published by Laxmi Book Publication. This book was released on 2024-08-05 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION In India, feminism has played a pivotal role in bringing about significant shifts in social, cultural, and political norms. Indian feminism has developed to address a wide range of issues that women across the country face. It is based on a long tradition of intellectual debate and grassroots activism. Feminist movements have reshaped Indian society in a variety of ways, including legal reforms, political empowerment, cultural norms, and media representation. The early pioneers of feminism in India, such as Sarojini Naidu and Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay, fought for women's rights as part of the larger struggle against colonialism. Feminism in India originated alongside movements for independence. Feminist activism gained momentum after independence, focusing on issues like dowry deaths, gender-based violence, and unequal access to employment and education. The women's movement of the 1970s and 1980s, which brought issues like dowry harassment and legal reforms to the forefront of national discourse, was one of the pivotal moments in Indian feminism. The All India Women's Conference (AIWC), the National Federation of Indian Women, and the Forum Against Oppression of Women (FAOW) all emerged during this time to advocate for societal change and legislative reform.

This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, women are facing social, economic, and cultural barriers impeding their autonomy and agency. Accelerated women empowerment programs often fail to attain their targets as envisaged by the policymakers due to a variety of reasons, with the most prominent being the deep-rooted cultural norms ingrained within society. In the era of globalization, empowerment of women demands new approaches and strategies that encourage the mainstreaming of gender equality as a societal norm. The Handbook of Research on New Dimensions of Gender Mainstreaming and Women Empowerment is a critical scholarly publication that examines global gender issues and new strategies for the promotion of women empowerment and gender mainstreaming in various spheres of women’s lives, including education and ICT, economic participation, health and sexuality, mental health, aging, law and judiciary, leadership, and decision making. It provides a comprehensive coverage of all major gender issues with novel ideas on gender mainstreaming being contributed by men and women authors from multidisciplinary backgrounds. Gender perspective and intersectional approach in the discourses make this handbook a unique contribution to the scholarship of social sciences and humanities. The book provides new theoretical inputs and practical directions to academicians, sociologists, social workers, psychologists, managers, lawyers, policy makers, and government officials in their efforts at gender mainstreaming. With a wide range of conceptual richness, this handbook is an excellent reference guide to students and researchers in programs pertaining to gender/women's studies, cultural studies, economics, sociology, social work, medicine, law, and management.

Book The Aftermath of Feminism

Download or read book The Aftermath of Feminism written by Angela McRobbie and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2008-11-20 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this trenchant inquiry into the state of feminism, Angela McRobbie breaks open the politics of sexual equality and ′affirmative feminism′ and sets down a new theory of gender power. Challenging the most basic assumptions of the ′end′ of feminism, this book argues that invidious forms of gender re-stabilisation are being re-established. Consumer and popular culture encroach on the terrain of so-called female freedom, appearing supportive of female success, yet tying women into new post-feminist neurotic dependencies. With a scathing critique of ′women′s empowerment′, McRobbie has developed a distinctive feminist analysis that she uses to examine socio-cultural phenomena embedded in contemporary women′s lives: from fashion photography and the television ′make-over′ genre to eating disorders, body anxiety and ′illegible rage′. A turning point in feminist theory, The Aftermath of Feminism will set a new agenda for gender studies and cultural studies.
