Book Monitoring of Local Public Services by Women led Grassroots Agencies a Case Study on the Processes of Women s Political Empowerment at Grassroots Level in Bangladesh

Download or read book Monitoring of Local Public Services by Women led Grassroots Agencies a Case Study on the Processes of Women s Political Empowerment at Grassroots Level in Bangladesh written by Abu Said Mohammad Juel Miah and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation reflects on the potential of informal political spaces related to transparency and accountability of local public services in the endeavours of enhancing womens leadership and political empowerment. Based on a field work, this dissertation highlights the processes of monitoring of local public services conducted by women-led grassroots agencies as well as the underlying processes of enhancing leadership and political empowerment of grassroots women through informal political spaces and processes like women-led citizen monitoring. This dissertation covers two distinct cases of women-led citizen monitoring. Qualitative methods and techniques were applied in the dissertation. Kabeers (1999) notion on the three dimensions of empowerment was followed in the dissertation as theoretical framework. This dissertation does not show any empirical evidence that monitoring of local public services, if conducted by women-led grassroots agencies, empowers the grassroots women politically. However, it can be indicated that the processes and spaces studies here are likely to offer space for building active citizenship or political agency among the grassroots women.

Book Voice and Agency

Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women the world over are being prevented from engaging in politics. Women's political leadership of any sort is a rarity and a career in politics rarer still. We have, however, begun to understand what it takes to create an enabling environment for women's political participation. In this exciting and pioneering collection, writers from Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East are brought together for the first time to talk explicitly about women's participation in the political scene across the global South. Answering such questions as how women can get political apprenticeship opportunities, how these opportunities translate into the pursuit of a political career, and how these pursuits then influence the kind of political platform women advocate once in power, Women in Politics is essential reading for anyone interested in what it means to engage politically.

Book Community Power and Grassroots Democracy

Download or read book Community Power and Grassroots Democracy written by Michael Kaufman and published by International Development Research Centre Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collected essays in this book provide a comparative examination of the process of grassroots mobilization and the development of community-based forms of popular democracy in Central and South America. The first part contains studies from individual countries on organizations ranging from those supported by governments and integrated into the country's political structure to groups that were organized against the existing political system. The organizations studied included those focusing on a particular concern, such as housing, and those with wide responsibility for community affairs; but all were organizations based on common interests where people lived and, in some cases, where people worked. The second part offers theme studies on men, women and differential participation; problems and meanings associated with decentralization, especially in relation to devolution of power to the local level and the construction of popular alternatives; and the competing theoretical paradigms of new social movements and resource mobilization.

Book Gendered Paradoxes

Download or read book Gendered Paradoxes written by Amy Lind and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s Ecuador has experienced a series of events unparalleled in its history. Its “free market” strategies exacerbated the debt crisis, and in response new forms of social movement organizing arose among the country’s poor, including women’s groups. Gendered Paradoxes focuses on women’s participation in the political and economic restructuring process of the past twenty-five years, showing how in their daily struggle for survival Ecuadorian women have both reinforced and embraced the neoliberal model yet also challenged its exclusionary nature. Drawing on her extensive ethnographic fieldwork and employing an approach combining political economy and cultural politics, Amy Lind charts the growth of several strands of women’s activism and identifies how they have helped redefine, often in contradictory ways, the real and imagined boundaries of neoliberal development discourse and practice. In her analysis of this ambivalent and “unfinished” cultural project of modernity in the Andes, she examines state policies and their effects on women of various social sectors; women’s community development initiatives and responses to the debt crisis; and the roles played by feminist “issue networks” in reshaping national and international policy agendas in Ecuador and in developing a transnationally influenced, locally based feminist movement.

Book Rethinking Empowerment

Download or read book Rethinking Empowerment written by Jane L. Parpart and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking Empowerment looks at the changing role of women in developing countries and calls for a new approach to empowerment. An approach that adopts a more nuanced, feminist interpretation of power and em(power)ment, recognises that local empowerment is always embedded in regional, national and global contexts, pays attention to institutional structures and politics and acknowledges that empowerment is both a process and an outcome. Moreover, the book warns that an obsession with measurement rather than process can undermine efforts to foster transformative and empowering outcomes. It concludes that power must be restored as the centrepiece of empowerment. Only then will the term and its advocates provide meaningful ammunition for dealing with the challenges of an increasingly unequal, and often sexist, global/local world.

Book Women Power and Property

Download or read book Women Power and Property written by Rachel E. Brulé and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-22 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quotas for women in government have swept the globe. Yet we know little about their capacity to upend entrenched social, political, and economic hierarchies. Women, Power, and Property explores this question within the context of India, the world's largest democracy. Brulé employs a research design that maximizes causal inference alongside extensive field research to explain the relationship between political representation, backlash, and economic empowerment. Her findings show that women in government – gatekeepers – catalyze access to fundamental economic rights to property. Women in politics have the power to support constituent rights at critical junctures, such as marriage negotiations, when they can strike integrative solutions to intrahousehold bargaining. Yet there is a paradox: quotas are essential for enforcement of rights, but they generate backlash against women who gain rights without bargaining leverage. In this groundbreaking study, Brulé shows how well-designed quotas can operate as a crucial tool to foster equality and benefit the women they are meant to empower.
