In the foreword Theodore Roosevelt writes: 'Mrs. Blatch shows why every woman who inherits the womanly virtues of the past, and who has grasped the ideal of the added womanly virtues of the present and the future, should support this war with all her strength and soul. Book Six Women and the Invasion WWI Centenary Series

Download or read book Six Women and the Invasion WWI Centenary Series written by Gabrielle Yerta and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""This little book gives a very graphic and interesting account by an eye-witness-who knows how to write!-of life in the occupied provinces of France under the daily pressure of the German invasion. There are many repulsive and odious incidents recorded here of the German occupation, but, mercifully, few ""atrocities,"" such as those which make of the French Governmental Reports, or that of the Bryce Commission, tales of horror and infamy that time will never wash out. These pages relate to the neighbourhood of Laon, and the worst brutalities committed by German soldiers in France seem to have happened farther south, along the line of the German retreat during the battle of the Marne, and in the border villages of Lorraine. But the picture drawn of the Germans in possession of a French country district, robbing and bullying its inhabitants, and delighting in all the petty tyrannies of their military regime, is one that writes in large-hand the lesson of this war. ""There must be no next time!"" If Europe cannot protect itself in future against such conduct on the part of a European nation, civilisation is doomed."" Book Women at Work in World Wars I and II

Download or read book Women at Work in World Wars I and II written by Paul Chrystal and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about women in World Wars I & II - women working in factories and on farms, or toiling perilously in field stations just behind the front lines, in inhospitable hospitals and convalescent homes. It is, therefore, about the prodigious contribution women made to the war efforts from 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, standing in for the men who had left their places of work for the various theatres of war from Greece and Italy to Belgium, from Mesopotamia to France. Their tasks were many and various: keeping the troops supplied with shells, bullets and explosives, keeping the nation from starving to death, keeping hundreds of thousands of wounded troops alive so that they might fight another day. The book is, in short, the uplifting but sometimes tragic story of the many women who stepped up to work in the factories, hospitals, field stations, in transport and in civil defense, on the farms and shipyards, or signed up to the various military and civil services during the two world wars of the 20th century, ‘wars to end all wars…’. The book is different because it deals with women’s labour in both world wars and in all occupations, it covers the discrimination and prejudice they faced from men at every level, military and civilian, even when they had demonstrated beyond doubt that they were quick learners, industrious and proficient, and usually as good as any man. The book raises the embarrassing question why it has it taken so long for the prodigious contribution women made in both wars to be recognized, and why some women workers still remain air brushed from our military history after more than a century. As it turned out, little was beyond their capabilities and it is reasonable to suppose that without their huge efforts and accomplishments both wars might have turned out very differently for us.

Book excerpt: ""The letters that follow are those of a young painter who was at the front from September [1914] till the beginning of April [1915]; at the latter date he was missing in one of the battles of the Argonne. Are we to speak of him in the present tense or in the past? We know not: since the day when the last mud-stained paper reached them, announcing the attack in which he was to vanish, what a close weight of silence for those who during eight months lived upon these almost daily letters! But for how many women, how many mothers, is a grief like this to-day a common lot!"" Book With Our Soldiers in France WWI Centenary Series

Download or read book With Our Soldiers in France WWI Centenary Series written by Sherwood Eddy and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These brief sketches are only fragmentary and have of necessity been hastily written. The writer has been asked to state his impression of the work among the men in France. He did not go there to write but to work. He has tried simply to state what he saw and to leave the reader to draw his own conclusions. A mere statement of the grim facts at the front, if they are not sugar-coated or glossed over, may not be pleasant reading, but it is unfair to those at home that they should not know the hard truth of the reality of things as they are." Book Foch the Man WWI Centenary Series

Download or read book Foch the Man WWI Centenary Series written by Clara E. Laughlin and published by . This book was released on 2014-05-21 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""As a leader of men, his principles need little, if any, adaptation to meet the requirements of the re-born world from which, we hope, he has banished the sword. Not to those only who would or who must captain their fellows, but to every individual soul fighting alone against weakness and despair and other foes, his life-story brings a rising tide of new courage, new strength, new faith. For the young man or woman struggling with the principles of success; for the man or woman of middle life, fearful that the time for great service has gone by; to the preacher and the teacher and other moulders of ideals-to these, and to many more, he speaks at least as thrillingly as to the soldier. This is what I have tried to make clear in my simple sketch here offered.""
