This book was released on 2007-04-02 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2006 in the subject African Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,0, Mälardalen University (School of Business), language: English, abstract: This bachelor thesis is based on a field study performed in the rural village Maciene in Mozambique. The village is situated in the Gaza province, in the southern part of the country. Most of the people in the village are peasant farmers, but they also live from cattle breeding and small-scale fishing. The village is situated in the Lebombo diocese within the Anglican Church. The Swedish church diocese in Västerås and the Swedish Mission Council are since many years supporting a development project in the village that is called The Maciene Vision. Since 2002 has Mälardalen University been part of the project, and students at the programme Economy for sustainable development and the Public health programme have been given the opportunity to perform field studies in Maciene.

Book Gender Relations of Production in Collective Farming in Mozambique

Download or read book Gender Relations of Production in Collective Farming in Mozambique written by Jean Davison and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender relations of production in Africa are often characterized by differential control over the division of labor, decision-making, and the allocation of resources. Mozambique, through its commitment to socialist transformation, has taken major steps to reorder gender relations of production at all levels. Based upon data collected in 1986, this paper focuses on changes in women's access to land for agricultural production using two case studies from Sofala Province -- one an integrated cooperative in Dondo District and the other a "women only" rice scheme in Beira. The paper argues that while women have generally benefited from the redistribution of land since independence, access to other resources and control over decision-making vary according to the type of development project in which women participate. Of the two projects discussed, women in the state-sponsored cooperative have better access to the group's resources and decision-making arenas than women in the bi-laterally aided rice scheme.

Book Deconstructing the gender gap in rural financial inclusion

Download or read book Deconstructing the gender gap in rural financial inclusion written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, along with the growing recognition of the rural gender gap in financial access as a key constraint to rural development, research has focused increasingly more towards analysing in depth the financial habits and patterns followed by women in rural areas, in order to produce observations and insights that could foster a more gender-sensitive policy approach towards financial inclusion. In line with this trend, this paper sets to explore the financial habits and constraints of rural women in two Sub-Saharan African countries (Mozambique, Tanzania), both at country and village level, with the objective of answering how, and why, they differ from those of their male counterparts. Building on the results achieved through this analysis, as well as on the general literature available on the topic, this paper aims to develop a range of general recommendations that can assist both local policymakers and other public stakeholders, as well as formal financial service providers, in shaping their approach towards a more gender-sensitive provision of rural financial services.

Book Social Networks and Farmers Willingness to Adopt New Agricultural Technologies

Download or read book Social Networks and Farmers Willingness to Adopt New Agricultural Technologies written by Maria Quinhentos and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACTThe agricultural sector is a major driver for socio-economic development of Mozambique. Agriculture is practiced by about 80% of the countrys working population, and the majority of the production is done by small-scale farmers. However, the productivity of staple food remains very low and is considered below the potential compared to other African countries. The use of improved seeds is crucial for increasing agricultural productivity. It is recognized that the use of improved seed may improve smallholder farmer crop productivity, income, and livelihoods. However, the uptake of improved seed in Mozambique is very low and the productivity of crops remains low. New technologies are being developed and strategies are needed to increase adoption. Social networks are fundamental for information and resource acquisition, and the adoption of new technologies. Social networks can help farmers to obtain improved seed and contribute to higher rates of adoption. This research investigated the effect of social networks on information acquisition and willingness to adopt a newly-introduced low-phosphorous (low-P) bean variety in rural Mozambique. The study draws on data from an ex-ante baseline socioeconomic survey of 289 farmers in six villages in three rural provinces in Mozambique that was conducted in 2008-2009 by the Mozambican Agricultural Research Institute (IIAM) and Penn State University (PSU) under a McKnight Foundation project. Bivariate logit models were estimated to examine the effects of social networks and other factors on 1) famer willingness to adopt a new low-P bean variety, specifically the meso-American black bean (a small variety adapted to low-P soils and with faster cooking time), and 2) on information acquisition on improved seed varieties from weak ties sources for the total sample and for men and women farmers separately. Farmer willingness to adopt the low-P bean was assessed under the condition that a buyer can be assured. The male and female information models were limited to households in which both household decision-makers were interviewed. Results indicate that social networks in general have positive effects on farmers information acquisition and willingness to adopt the new low-P beans. Results show that 84% of farmers were willing to adopt the new low-P bean variety and 50% acquired information on how to get improved seed from their weak ties (eg, NGOs, traders, etc.). The results indicate that the oldest farmers are less likely to be willing to adopt the new low-P bean variety as compared to the youngest farmers. Further, farmers with larger farms are found to be more likely to be willing to adopt the low-P bean than farmers on smaller farms. The effect of participation in off-farm activities is negative and statistically significant, suggesting that farmers participating in off-farm activities are less likely to willing to adopt meso-American low-P beans. The effect of economic networks is positive and statistically significant as well, suggesting that farmers with economic ties are more willing to adopt the new low-P beans. Finally, village location in relation to an IIAM research station has positive influences on willingness to adopt; farmers in IIAM-influenced villages in the provinces of Zambezia and Niassa were more likely to be willing to adopt the new low-P bean variety compared to farmers in the non-IIAM influenced village in Tete Province. There were no statistical differences between the non IIAM influenced villages in Niassa and Zambezia Provinces and that in Tete Province. Findings show that effect of farmer gender (male) is positive and statistically significant at the .05 level, suggesting that men are more likely to acquire information from weak ties compared to women in the villages. The results also show that older men and women farmers are less likely to acquire information from weak ties compared to the youngest farmers. Household size is found to positively affect information acquisition from weak ties, with larger household more likely to access information on improved seed from NGOs, traders, etc. A negative effect of farm size on information acquisition from weak ties was also found. The results suggest that farmers with smaller farms were more likely to acquire information from weak ties than farmers with larger farms. At the same time, farmers on the larger farms are more likely to adopt, an interesting result. The coefficient for access to credit was positive and statistically significant for the full sample and for men. The results suggest that men farmers with access to credit are more likely to acquire information from weak ties than those with no access to credit. The credit variable was not significant for women farmers, likely due to low levels of credit receipt among them. Access to credit is important for information acquisition. The estimated models also showed that men participating in off-farm activities are more likely to acquire information from weak ties than those not participating in off-farm activities. The result may indicate that off-farm jobs provide conduits to information from weak ties. While farmers with off-farm engagement were less likely to adopt the new bean variety, they are more likely to access information on improved crop varieties than their counterparts. Additional research is needed. Further, the coefficient for clubs that influence agricultural decisions is positive and statistically significant for the full sample and for women. The results suggest that women in clubs that influence their agricultural decisions are more likely to acquire information from weak ties than women who are not in clubs. Also, location closer to an IIAM research station can positively influence information acquisition for both men and women. The results from this study support the recommendation that villages farther from established research stations be targeted for interventions to provide farmers with knowledge on the new low-P varieties of the common bean. The results also suggest that smallholder farmers in Mozambique obtain improved seed from different sources, including strong ties (informal sources) and weak ties (formal sources). Both sources play a role in seed dissemination; through introduction of new seed and through seed sharing/exchange. It is recommended that both weak and strong ties be strengthened as sources of improved seed. There are limitations to this research that will be overcome in future phases of the project. Foremost is that one of the dependent variables of this study is willingness to adopt the new low-P beans. One of the drawbacks of asking willingness instead of actual uptake of seed is that farmers may be more likely to say yes with the expectation to receive free seed. Future research on the actual adoption in the future is encouraged.

Download or read book Beating the Odds written by Louise Fox and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This assessment, reflecting poverty's many dimensions in Mozambique, combines multiple disciplines and diagnostic tools to explore poverty. It draws on a combination of approaches and tools from three separate analytical diagnostics developed by the World Bank: poverty assessment, country gender assessment, and country social analysis. It uses monetary, human, and social indicators and combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to understand trends in poverty and the dynamics that shape them. The objective is to support the development and implementation of pro-poor policies that really work by taking poverty's multiple dimensions into account. Because Mozambique has not collected nationally representative household survey data measuring poverty status and outcome indicators since 2003, the report focuses primarily on the changes in poverty and household community welfare through that year. When data are available after 2003, the assessment uses them, including data from a special non representative survey developed for this report-the poverty and vulnerability survey. The starting point for the analysis uses multiple quantitative and qualitative indicators that describe levels of and changes in opportunities and outcomes for households and communities in Mozambique since 1997. The rest of the report explains these changes.

Book Running Out of Time The Reduction of women s work burden in agricultural production

Download or read book Running Out of Time The Reduction of women s work burden in agricultural production written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2015-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a broad literature review, this publication discusses rural women’s time poverty in agriculture, elaborates on its possible causes and implications and provides insight into the various types of constraints that affect the adoption of solutions for reducing work burden. This paper raises questions about the adequacy of women’s access to technologies, services and infrastructure and about the control women have over their time, given their major contributions to agriculture. It also look s into the available labour-saving technologies, practices and services that can support women to better address the demands derived from the domestic and productive spheres and improve their well-being. The reader is presented with an overview of successfully-tested technologies, services and resource management practices in the context of water, energy, information and communication. The findings elaborated in this paper feed a set of recommendations provided for policy makers and development partners. A gender-transformative approach at community and household level is suggested as a way forward to promote women’s increased control over the allocation of their time.

Book Globalization Urban Progress Urban Problems Rural Disadvantages

Download or read book Globalization Urban Progress Urban Problems Rural Disadvantages written by Stefanie Knauder and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: This text demonstrates the mutual effects of, and interconnections between, globalization, urbanization and rural stagnation, both theoretically and empirically. It places its comprehensive empirical investigation on two levels of urbanization - the peri-urban and the fully urbanized areas - and includes the analysis of the rural conditions into the context of the Southern African region, and also into the context of global processes in an historical and interdisciplinary perspective. The text analyzes the magnitude of the two gaps and the process of social change between the three areas objectively, by showing the changing social interaction patterns, the differences in housing and other socio-economic variables, and subjectively, through showing the judgement of the people of these variables the degree of satisfaction and depression. As the majority of variables reveal poverty, the root causes for it in Mozambique, Africa and the Third World are analyzed and aspects of an alternative development and an alternative globalization are presented.

The papers present a conceptual framework linking both market and household work, review some of the available literature and surveys on time use in Africa, and use tools and approaches drawn from analysis of consumption-based poverty to develop the concept of a time poverty line and to examine linkages between time poverty, consumption poverty, and ot.

Book Chains of Fortune

Download or read book Chains of Fortune written by Marilyn Carr and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 2004 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture "Much has been written about the negative impact of globalisation on the world's poor, and especially on women. But globalisation also opens up new economic opportunities if poor women producers and workers are enabled to take advantage of them. The need for assistance differs between independent producers on the one hand and wage workers in export industries on the other. In ther former case, the need mainly is for increased access to global markets. In the latter case, the need mainly is for better organizing so as to bargain for better wages and working conditions. This edited volume brings together six case studies. Three link local producers with global markets (...). Three focus on improving the working conditions of the hundreds of thousands of wage workers in global value chains."

Book Women s empowerment in agriculture and dietary quality across the life course Evidence from Bangladesh

Download or read book Women s empowerment in agriculture and dietary quality across the life course Evidence from Bangladesh written by Sraboni, Esha and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using nationally representative survey data from rural Bangladesh, this paper examines the relationship between women’s empowerment in agriculture and indicators of individual dietary quality. Our findings suggest that women’s empowerment is associated with better dietary quality for individuals within the household, with varying effects across the life course. Women’s empowerment is associated with more diverse diets for children younger than five years, but empowerment measures are not consistently associated with increases in nutrient intake for this age group. Women’s empowerment is positively and significantly associated with adult men’s and women’s dietary diversity and nutrient intakes. Different empowerment domains may have different impacts on nutrition, but other characteristics, such as maternal schooling and household socioeconomic status, may play a more important role for younger children. The importance of maternal education in the dietary quality of young children, and the relatively greater importance of women’s empowerment for older children and adults, imply that policies designed to empower women and improve nutritional status should be informed by knowledge of which specific domains of women’s empowerment matter for particular nutritional outcomes at specific stages of the life course.

Book Working with Smallholders

Download or read book Working with Smallholders written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2023-11-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Smallholder farmers are the stewards of more than 80 percent of the world's farms. These small family businesses produce about one-third of the world's food. In Africa and Asia, smallholders dominate the production of food crops, as well as export commodities such as cocoa, coffee, and cotton. However, smallholders and farm workers remain among the poorest segments of the population, and they are on the frontline of climate change. Smallholder farmers face constraints in accessing inputs, finance, knowledge, technology, labor, and markets. Raising farm-level productivity in a sustainable way is a key development priority. Agribusinesses are increasingly working with smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries to secure agricultural commodities. More productive smallholders boost rural incomes and economic growth, as well as reduce poverty. Smallholders also represent a growing underserved market for farm inputs, information, and financial services. Working with Smallholders: A Handbook for Firms Building Sustainable Supply Chains (third edition) shows agribusinesses how to engage more effectively with smallholders and to develop sustainable, resilient, and productive supply chains. The book compiles practical solutions and cutting-edge ideas to overcome the challenges facing smallholders. This third edition is substantially revised from the second edition and incorporates new material on the potential for digital technologies and sustainable farming. This handbook is written principally to outline opportunities for the private sector. The content may also be useful to the staffs of governmental or nongovernmental development programs working with smallholders, as well as to academic and research institutions."--

Download or read book Gender Generation and Poverty written by Sylvia H. Chant and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'feminisation of poverty' is viewed as a global trend, and of particular concern in developing regions. Yet although popularisation of the term may have raised women's visibility in development discourses and gone some way to 'en-gender' policies for poverty reduction, the construct is only weakly substantiated. This work covers this topic.

Download or read book Conspicuous Destruction written by Human Rights Watch (Organization) and published by Human Rights Watch. This book was released on 1992 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing two sets of concerns, this report covers both the abuses relating to the seventeen years of war between the Mozambique Armed Forces and the rebel Mozambique National Resistance, as well as the reforms instigated by the ruling Mozambique Liberation Front under President Joachim Chissano. Africa Watch evaluates the progress made by the Liberation Front government toward a democratic system of government that respects civil and political rights. The 1990 Constitution and related legislation are the centerpiece of this transition, and represent the most wholehearted attempt to build an institutional and legal framework to guarantee respect for human rights so far attempted in the history of Mozambique. Major concerns remain, however, relating to the ability of the government to implement the promised changes.

Book Masculinities in Contemporary Africa

Download or read book Masculinities in Contemporary Africa written by Egodi Uchendu and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although gender and non-gender scholars have studied men, such an academic exercise requires a critical and focused study of masculine subjects in particular social contexts, which is what this book attempts to do. This empirically rich collection of essays, the seventh of the CODESRIA Gender Series, deals with critical examinations of various shades and ramifications of Africa's masculinities and what these portend for the peoples of Africa and for gender relations in the continent. So much has changed in terms of notions and expressions of masculinities in Africa since ancient times, but many aspects of contemporary masculinities were fashioned during and since the colonial period. The papers in this volume were initially discussed at the 2005 month-long CODESRIA Gender Institute in Dakar. The contributors are gender scholars drawn from various disciplines in the wide fields of the humanities and the social sciences with research interests in the critical study of men and masculinities in Africa. The CODESRIA Gender Series aims at keeping alive and nourishing the African social science knowledge base with insightful research and debates that challenge conventional wisdom, structures and ideologies that are narrowly informed by caricatures of gender realities. The series strives to showcase the best in African gender research and provide a platform for emerging new talents to flower.
