Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Before the Law T is not attempted in the following pages to give a complete compendium of the law relating to mar ried women, so as to make it a work of reference it is hoped that the subject will be so presented as to give to intelligent readers outside of the legal pro fession a reliable summary 'of the law free from the usual technicalities. Still, the subject is so far treated in a legal point of view, as to afford, it is hoped, some assistance to the law-student. I have studiously avoided the part of a doctri naz'ra; Ihave only considered the law as it is; and have not introduced questions of a debatable charac ter upon which decisions differ. To carry out the subject properly, I was compelled to treat of the law pertaining to the married relation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and the Law His work is designed to serve the pur poses of a general view of the legal con dition of the women of the United States at the present time, and is more especially for the reading of women. It is a general state ment and not an exhaustive analysis; it is not designed for the practising lawyer, man or woman, for though it deals with legal prin ciples, it does not apply them to concrete cases; and least of all is it an attempt to make every woman her own lawyer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman and the Law: A Comparison of the Rights of Men and the Rights of Women Before the Law No one, except reviewers for newspapers, whose whole idea of a volume is drawn from this uncer tain source, ever reads a preface. It furnishes a cozy little nook into which the snugly ensconced author may hide and say just what he pleases, without danger of discovery. Anice little retreat it is, surely and the writer has slyly crept into this hiding-place just to talk it all over to him self. Shall the old and worn manuscript be ex changed for type? Will the volume bear the searching criticism of dear friends and respected acquaintances? Will the cause of human equal ity and the happiness of the race be advanced thereby? Will the distinguished leaders in the Woman's Suffrage Party shout in derision, or will they discover a co-working spirit? What will Mrs. Livermore, or Miss Dickinson, or Mrs. Stowe say about it, if a stray Copy should be placed in their laps by the newsboy, when there is nothing else to command their attention? What would those bright angels over there say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The most fortunate of them have been cruelly obstructed by the large remainder of barbarism which exists in every community, and they have done their work in the teeth of every conceivable disadvantage. They have had to snatch it from a cross-fire of hostile circumstances. That they should have been able to exercise their rare talents at all, and so triumphantly, is a kind of miracle, at which we can but stand amazed. To avoid the risk of any possible misconstrue tion I shall offer here a short explanation of my locus standi as regards the whole subject in ques tion. I have only to request-that you will bear in mind certain established truths, which occasmnally escape your memory when you are reading a work of fiction. Be pleased, then, to remember (first): that the actions of human beings are not invariably governed by the laws of pure reason. (secondly) that we are by no means always in the habit (especially when we happen to be women) of bestowing our love on the objects which are the most deserving of it, in the Opinions of our friends. (thirdly and Lastly): that Characters which may not have appeared, and Events which may not have taken place, Within the limits of our own individual experience, may nevertheless be perfectly natural Characters and perfectly probable Events, for all that. Having said these few words, I have said'all that seems to be necessary at the present time; and I bid you cordially farewell. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Rights Under the Law: In Three Lectures, Delivered in Boston, January, 1861 There seems, at first sight, a certain presumption in offering to an American public, at this moment, any book which does not treat of the great interests which convulse and perplex the United States. But experience has shown, that neither the individual nor the national mind can remain continually upon the rack; and both author and publisher have thought that a book upon a serious subject, popa lar in form and low in price, would find, perhaps, a more hearty welcome, under present circum stances, than in those prosperous days, when ro manees and poems, travels and biographies, are scattered over every table by the score. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laws and Rights of Women in Texas The question now appears to me so complex that I should have re quested further time for preparation; it reminds me of an incident related by Mr. Rollin, the Historian He relates, that the King of Syracuse on a certain occasion, asked the Poet Simonides this question, What is God? The Poet requested a day in which to return his answer; on the morrow when the King sent for the reply, the Poet requested two days more; that being granted the King again sent for the reply, and the Poet requested four days in which to answer, and as often thereafter as the King sent for the answer, as often doubled the time; the King however became impatient, with the delay and sent for the Poet to appear before him and explain, this remarkable conduct; whereupon the Poet appearing before the King, justified, says, that he was forced to ask for such time, because he said the more he contemplated the subject the more obscure it seems. But, if another half century should glide away without re form in our Ecclesiastical and other Courts (as more than half a century elapsed, between the motion of Ex - Chancellor Hard wicke and the amendment of the Habeas Corpus Act) shall we set it all down to the overwhelming interest taken in Quebec and Sebastopol? Book excerpt: Winner of the LA Times Book Prize in Current Interest An instant New York Times Bestseller! “Stirring…Lithwick’s approach, interweaving interviews with legal commentary, allows her subjects to shine...Inspiring.”—New York Times Book Review “In Dahlia Lithwick’s urgent, engaging Lady Justice, Dobbs serves as a devastating bookend to a story that begins in hope.”—Boston Globe Dahlia Lithwick, one of the nation’s foremost legal commentators, tells the gripping and heroic story of the women lawyers who fought the racism, sexism, and xenophobia of Donald Trump’s presidency—and won After the sudden shock of Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in 2016, many Americans felt lost and uncertain. It was clear he and his administration were going to pursue a series of retrograde, devastating policies. What could be done? Immediately, women lawyers all around the country, independently of each other, sprang into action, and they had a common goal: they weren’t going to stand by in the face of injustice, while Trump, Mitch McConnell, and the Republican party did everything in their power to remake the judiciary in their own conservative image. Over the next four years, the women worked tirelessly to hold the line against the most chaotic and malign presidency in living memory. There was Sally Yates, the acting attorney general of the United States, who refused to sign off on the Muslim travel ban. And Becca Heller, the founder of a refugee assistance program who brought the fight over the travel ban to the airports. And Roberta Kaplan, the famed commercial litigator, who sued the neo-Nazis in Charlottesville. And, of course, Stacey Abrams, whose efforts to protect the voting rights of millions of Georgians may well have been what won the Senate for the Democrats in 2020. These are just a handful of the stories Lithwick dramatizes in thrilling detail to tell a brand-new and deeply inspiring account of the Trump years. With unparalleled access to her subjects, she has written a luminous book, not about the villains of the Trump years, but about the heroes. And as the country confronts the news that the Supreme Court, which includes three Trump-appointed justices, will soon overturn Roe v. Wade, Lithwick shines a light on not only the major consequences of such a decision, but issues a clarion call to all who might, like the women in this book, feel the urgency to join the fight. A celebration of the tireless efforts, legal ingenuity, and indefatigable spirit of the women whose work all too often went unrecognized at the time, Lady Justice is destined to be treasured and passed from hand to hand for generations to come, not just among lawyers and law students, but among all optimistic and hopeful Americans.
