Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Before Vassar Opened: A Contribution to the History of the Higher, Education of Women in America The movement for the higher education of wo men was so slow in enlisting the interest of the country that it is perhaps not surprising that no full history of it exists. For it was not only slow, but obscure, and came to large recogni tion only after the war, when a great gift con stituted a college that could attract the atten tion of a people absorbed in other and more pressing interests. Since that time our interest has been focused on progress and results, rather than on origins, and history has been subordinated to prophecy. The details of the earlier record, moreover, must be sought in a scattered literature of small interest to any but special students, in catalogues, in government reports, in old newspapers, and in occasional histories of individual institutions and in bio graphies of leaders of more or less distinction. But we cannot continue content with the pres ent or with our hopes, and must ask what early steps preceded what has seemed to most the sudden bursting of a new idea in the his tory of man. That Vassar's opening marked an epoch there can be no question, and the so cial and economic conditions that followed the Civil War responded immediately to the new opportunity; but the results could not have been so immediate and. So encouraging had it not been for the efforts of many pioneers in the North and in the South. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Bulletin on Institute on Higher Education of Women, Vol. 24: June 19-June 21, 1930 at Alabama College, Montevallo, Alabama In the autumn of letters were sent to those whom it hoped to induce to participate in the program, and by early spring the program was complete. As indicated on the pre ceding pages, it consisted of three parts. First, a general discussion, including papers on The Contribution of Women's Colleges and on Coeducation; secondly, new college programs that have affected the point of view of those concerned with the higher education of women; and thirdly, phases of the curriculum that have been added to the courses of study for women particularly in the last few years. In connection with this latter division the consideration of professional objectives in the higher education of women came in for discussion. For one of the chief problems before the liberal arts college of today is to determine how far it can meet the fast growing demand for professional or pre-professional training for the large number of activities which will command the time and attention of the graduates after college, and still retain its liberal arts character. It was the hope that through such a program a large number of those interested in the higher education of women might be stimulated to see the problems in a new light. All colleges for women in the southern states were invited to send representatives, and in addition to this a number of coeducational institutions throughout the country. There were forty colleges represented at the meeting, with a total of ninety delegates. While the representation was not large it was the general feeling of those who came that it was an encouraging be ginning, since it was the first institute of its kind to be held. There was also the feeling that the conference was worth while as a stimulus to those concerned with the prob lems under discussion. Some women's college presidents who attended expressed themselves as having got more out of the program than from any other educational conference. The papers published herein speak for the high quality of the program. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Woman and the University Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Woman and the University Classic Reprint written by David Starr Jordan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman and the University The subject of the higher training of young women may resolve itself into three questions: 1. Shall a girl receive a college education? 2. Shall she receive the same kind of college education as a boy? 3. Shall she be educated in the same college? As to the first question: It must depend on the character of the girl. Precisely so with the boy. What we should do with either depends on his or her possibilities. No parent should let either boy or girl enter life with any less preparation than the best he can give. It is true that many college graduates, boys and girls alike, do not amount to much after the schools have done all they can. It is true, also, that higher education is not a question alone of preparing great men for great things. It must prepare even little men for greater things than they would otherwise have found possible. And so it is with the education of women. The needs of the time are imperative. The highest product of social evolution is the growth of the civilized home, the home that only a wise, cultivated and high-minded woman can make. To furnish such woman is one of the worthiest functions of higher education. No young women capable of becoming such should be condemned to anything lower. Book The Higher Education of Woman

Download or read book The Higher Education of Woman written by John Clark Murray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Education of Woman: An Address Delivered at the Opening of Queen's College, Kingston, Canada, Session 1871-72 But if the fmovemeut Spoken of does not seek to withdraw women from the work of their households, the question will naturally be asked, What is the object at which it aims 'z lt endeavours to accomplish a'rcform in the same direction in which every previous im p1ovement in the re ation of the sexes has pro ceeded, - towards the elevation of woman from a state of real or virtual slavery to man. That is now required is that this tendency of civilization shall be completed by at last ao cording to women perfect equality with men in reference to social position and legal rights. The conscience of Christendom undoubtedly re volts against any explicit subjection of the one sex to the other; and consequently it is only necessary to point out the inequality in the pri vileges accorded to the two sexes, in order to prove the rightfulness of the demand for some reform. Now, there are various ways in which this subject may be approached, as there are various aspects in which this inequal ity of rights is exhibited. The point of view from which the question will be examined at present, is one from which the necessity of some concession to women is peculiarly clear.
