Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Studies: S. Paul on the Ministry of Women If the problem whether women may be constituted preachers to the mixed congregation is to be rightly decided, the decision must be based on Christian principles. These principles must be studied in Scripture, and especially in the teaching of S. Paul, because he is the chief exponent of this subject. Attention must be fixed on the two main passages in the First Epistle to the Corinthians, where the apostle regulates the demeanour of women in the assemblies of the Church. The two passages are I Cor. xi. 5 and I Cor. xiv. 33, and the verses following. In the former place the apostle lays down the dogmatic principles that "the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man" (verse 3). On the basis of this principle he rules that "every man praying or prophesying with his head covered dishonoureth his head. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women and Missions: In the Methodist Episcopal Church, South In the following pages the author has set fourth merely the outstanding facts in the history of the organized woman's missionary work in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The great underlying purpose, however, has been to state these facts in such a way that they themselves will tell the story of God's marvelous leading through the years. The vision of service came first to a small group of women without means, without experience, and with no authorized channel through which to work; but in less than fifty years their prayers and their small efforts had resulted in the enlistment of over two hundred thousand women and children in the auxiliaries of the Woman's Missionary Society. The appeal of one small school in China and the cry of distress sent out in behalf of the poorly paid preachers on the frontier resulted in an organization which in 1920 was conducting well-equipped schools and social-evangelistic centers in the homeland and in seven foreign mission fields. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sisterhood Life and Woman's Work: In the Mission-Field of the Church It does not seem to me that an apology for the Sisterhood form of life within the Church is so much needed, as a statement of the true theory and principles on which it is based. For my own part, I have no doubt that abundant sanction may be found for this special form of the dedicated life, in those significant principles, the working of which may be reverently traced in our Lord's own Life on earth, and which are more explicitly declared in His recorded Sayings. Book Women Helpers in the Church

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women Helpers in the Church: Their Sayings and Doings The following interesting and instructive narratives of woman's agency in winning souls and grafting them into the Church, were written at the urgent solicitation of an associate worker. He saw what God had wrought through the agency of zealous women providentially placed in ripe fields; he therefore desired to obtain from them a detailed statement of the way in which these successes had been wrought, to encourage still more timid women to use their experience and heart-power in aid of the Christian min istry. Permission was with difliculty obtained from all of'the writers to submit their narratives to Bishop Alonzo Potter for use at his discretion. He deemed their publication very important, and was in the act of preparing them for the press when feeble health induced him to undertake a sea voyage, from which he never returned. These papers, with introductory articles written by the undersigned over the letter H, were, after the lamented death of Bishop Potter, published in the spirit OF missions.
