Download or read book Gender and imperialism written by Clare Midgley and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book marks an important new intervention into a vibrant area of scholarship, creating a dialogue between the histories of imperialism and of women and gender. By engaging critically with both traditional British imperial history and colonial discourse analysis, the essays demonstrate how feminist historians can play a central role in creating new histories of British imperialism. Chronologically, the focus is on the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, while geographically the essays range from the Caribbean to Australia and span India, Africa, Ireland and Britain itself. Topics explored include the question of female agency in imperial contexts, the relationships between feminism and nationalism, and questions of sexuality, masculinity and imperial power.
Download or read book Sourcebook of the World s Religions written by Joel Diederik Beversluis and published by New World Library. This book was released on 2000 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes small portraits of all the major religious traditions by scholars in each field, as well as essays on spiritual philosophies such as Wicca, theosophy, and indigenous religions by various adherents. The book is divided into four sections: major world religions, spiritualisms, and philosophies; interfaith dialogue; creating a peaceful, inclusive, just world; and a very large resource guide with various directories of on- and off-line religious sites. Under the third section, on creating a peaceful world, for example, one may find "The Jain Declaration on Nature," wherein it is written that one of Gandhi's most treasured friends was a Jain, Shrimad Rajchandra, who influenced the Mahatma with a central Jain tenet, ahimsa, or nonviolence. The section on the Unification Church, another example, is absent all mention of the different phases and kinds of Moon's troubles, attempting only to give an objective portrait of the religion's tenets. This uncontentious, unconditionally loving compendium came out of a 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago. Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand how women lead and make meaning of their leadership in evangelical mission organizations. Twelve executive-level women were interviewed. They described how they came to lead and told stories of their successes and challenges. They also described their thoughts on why they were chosen to lead, and what it was like to be a woman leader in their organizations. Analysis of their stories revealed their challenges as well as organizations’ ongoing ambivalence regarding women leaders. Conclusions from the study and suggestions for improved organizational practice are offered.
