Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wolfville These tales by the Old Cattleman have been submitted to perhaps a dozen people. They have read, criticised, and advised. The advice was good; the criticism just. Some suggested a sketch which might in detail set forth Wolfville; there were those who wanted something like a picture of the Old Cattleman; while others urged an elaboration of the personal characteristics of Old Man Enright, Doc Peets, Cherokee Hall, Moore, Tutt, Boggs, Faro Nell, Old Monte, and Texas Thompson. I have, how ever, concluded to leave all these matters to the illustrations of Mr. Remington and the imaginations of those who read. Ithink it the better way - certainly it is the easier one for me. I shall therefore permit the Old Cattleman to tell his stories in his own fashion. The style will be crude, abrupt, and meagre, but I trust it will prove as satisfactory to the reader as it has to me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wolfville Days I am no such savage of letters, but I am aware that these Tales of Ike Old Cattleman could never, by whatever stress of genius they occurred, be up lifted as an exalted literature. They offer no chance of those elegancies which a definition of the phrase demands. But failing a higher place, these still may please. There has been merit without elegance; and how often do we find elegance lack ing heart and surprise in the most beautiful the most corrupt? The Old Cattleman is rude, storm-beat and of a shaggy roughness. Yet he is as well titled to a place in the circle of general appreciation as Roger de Coverley himself; he but runs the peril of my inability to draw him and display him as he is. At least, the old fellow comes frankly before you; he strives not to bushwhack or trap a public interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wolfville Folks Which I've told you," observed the Old Cattleman, puffing at his briar pipe - "which I've already told you how Missis Rucker goes on surroundin' old Rucker with connoobial joy to sech a degree that, one mornin' when her wifely back is turned, he ups an' stampedes off into the hills, an' takes refutch with the Apaches. But I never reelates how he gets aroused to his dooty as a husband, an' returns. That mir'cle comes to pass in this wise." Following a reminiscent, smoke-filled pause, the old gentleman continued: "When Rucker is guilty of this yere desertion, Wolfville says nothin' an' does nothin'. It is no part of Wolfville's commoonal respons'bility, as it sees the same, to go pirootin' off on the trail of Rucker, with a purpose of draggin' him back that a-way to his domestic happiness. His elopment is wholly a private play, an' one wharin we ain't entitled to ask for kyards. Shorely not, wantin' speesific requests from Missis Rucker so to do; an' sech don't come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The White Beaver Plot, but Paul evidently understood it, and he became highly excited at once. The idea of shooting the last turkey that was known to inhabit that country for miles around J ock'e Lake, and which had attracted into the woods more than one fellow who was handy with the trigger, was an Object well worth trying for, and Paul made up his mind that if his father could spare him he would go into the woods with Hugh and see if they could not waylay that old turkey. That old rogue, as he was called by all who knew anything of his history, had once been the leader of a flock of wild turkeys who inhabited the shores of Jock's Lake, a few miles away; but one by one they had fallen before the aim of the sharpshooters who had gone into the woods in search of him, and now he was the only one left. His cunning proved to be too much for the skill of his human antagonists until the winter before our story begins, and then he had suddenly disappeared, and no one knew. Download or read book Jubilee of Acadia College and Memorial Exercises Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jubilee of Acadia College and Memorial Exercises The Committee entrusted with the publication of the proceedings at the celebration of the Jubilee of Acadia College and the memorial exercises recently held in relation to the decease of the Rev. E. A. Crawley, D.D., D.C.L., deem it advisable to make only very brief remark by way of preface. As the close of the first half century of Acadia's history approached, the Governors of the College suggested to the Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces the desirability of appropriately marking the completion of that period by the gathering together of the friends of the College at Wolfville, and by such exercises as might be deemed in accord with that occasion. The Convention readily adopted the proposal, and, upon the invitation of the Governors, it was determined to hold the Convention of 1888 at Wolfville, immediately preceding the Jubilee. The business of the Convention was brought to a close on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 28, and that evening and the following day were entirely devoted to the Jubilee celebration. Respecting the general character of the exercises a brief extract from the Year Book of 1888, may be in place: "These Jubilee meetings were throughout at once an exhibition of the deep interest of Acadia's constituency in her welfare, and the occasion for pledging anew all the energies of the Denomination to meet the enlarging requirements which will ever be made as the country advances. "Two things were equally apparent in these solemnities, - the entire absence of the slightest desire to combine with other educational institutions, and, at the same time, the strongest and most determined purpose to keep Acadia forever abreast of the wants of the time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Calendar of Acadia University: Wolfville, Nova Scotia, 1903-1904 In 1851 the power of appointing the Governors was transferred from the Education Society to the Baptist Convention of the Maritime Provinces. The developments of succeeding years made it necessary that various amendments to the original Charter should be Obtained. In order to avoid confusion and bring the Act Of Incorporation into more complete harmony with existing conditions, a general revision and consolidation Of the different Acts relating to the College was proposed by the Board Of Governors. The Report of the Committee Of the Board having been adopted by the Governors, was referred to the Convention. That body, at its meeting in Yarmouth in August, 1890, after suggesting some modifications, approved the report and instructed the Governors to apply to the Legislature Of Nova Scotia for the necessary legislation. Accordingly a bill embodying the proposed alterations was passed by the two Houses at the Session of 1891, and received the signa ture Of the lieutenant-governor on the 19th May in the same year. A Copy of the Revised Charter is appended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
