Book excerpt: Firekeeper has always believed that her heart is a wolf’s heart. Now the time has come for her to prove it. Blind Seer’s search for a teacher of the magical arts brought him and Firekeeper to Rhinadei, a land rich in magical lore, but intolerant of those who would rebel against its core precepts. Now, eager to aid Wythcombe, his new teacher, Blind Seer agrees to lend his keen senses to the hunt for Kabot—Wythcombe’s childhood rival and leader of a band of fanatical blood mages. In this hunt, Firekeeper runs as ever at Blind Seer’s side. Rounding out their pack are Laria and Ranz, two young humans with potent magical gifts of their own; Farborn, a yarimaimalom falcon; Wythcombe himself, and the ever enigmatic Meddler. Yet, despite the versatility of this pack, Kabot’s blood mages miraculously elude them, leaving behind the tantalizing scent of more power than they should possess. Suspicion builds that Kabot has acquired a new ally: an ally who may be one of their own pack turned traitor. “A beautiful and complex book.” Publisher’s Weekly on Through Wolf’s Eyes “Thrilling.” Publisher’s Weekly on Wolf Hunting “Intricately plotted, A thought-provoking tale of magic and politics, enlivened by Firekeeper’s wry and wolfish point-of-view.” Publisher’s Weekly on Wolf’s Blood

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The struggle from late youth on, with and without God, agony, narcotics and love is a torment rarely recorded with such sustained eloquence and passion as you will find in this collection." --Fanny Howe This highly-anticipated debut boldly confronts addiction and courses the strenuous path of recovery, beginning in the wilds of the mind. Poems confront craving, control, the constant battle of alcoholism and sobriety, and the questioning of the self and its instincts within the context of this never-ending fight. From "Stop Me If You've Heard This One Before" Sometimes you just have to leave whatever's real to you, you have to clomp through fields and kick the caps off all the toadstools. Sometimes you have to march all the way to Galilee or the literal foot of God himself before you realize you've already passed the place where you were supposed to die. I can no longer remember the being afraid, only that it came to an end. Kaveh Akbar is the founding editor of Divedapper. His poems appear recently or soon in The New Yorker, Poetry, APR, Tin House, Ploughshares, PBS NewsHour, and elsewhere. The recipient of a 2016 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellowship from the Poetry Foundation and the Lucille Medwick Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America, Akbar was born in Tehran, Iran, and currently lives and teaches in Florida.

  • ISBN : 0226516989
  • Pages : 483 pages

Download or read book Wolves written by L. David Mech and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wolves are some of the world's most charismatic and controversial animals, capturing the imaginations of their friends and foes alike. Highly intelligent and adaptable, they hunt and play together in close-knit packs, sometimes roaming over hundreds of square miles in search of food. Once teetering on the brink of extinction across much of the United States and Europe, wolves have made a tremendous comeback in recent years, thanks to legal protection, changing human attitudes, and efforts to reintroduce them to suitable habitats in North America. As wolf populations have rebounded, scientific studies of them have also flourished. But there hasn't been a systematic, comprehensive overview of wolf biology since 1970. In Wolves, many of the world's leading wolf experts provide state-of-the-art coverage of just about everything you could want to know about these fascinating creatures. Individual chapters cover wolf social ecology, behavior, communication, feeding habits and hunting techniques, population dynamics, physiology and pathology, molecular genetics, evolution and taxonomy, interactions with nonhuman animals such as bears and coyotes, reintroduction, interactions with humans, and conservation and recovery efforts. The book discusses both gray and red wolves in detail and includes information about wolves around the world, from the United States and Canada to Italy, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Israel, India, and Mongolia. Wolves is also extensively illustrated with black and white photos, line drawings, maps, and fifty color plates. Unrivalled in scope and comprehensiveness, Wolves will become the definitive resource on these extraordinary animals for scientists and amateurs alike. “An excellent compilation of current knowledge, with contributions from all the main players in wolf research. . . . It is designed for a wide readership, and certainly the language and style will appeal to both scientists and lucophiles alike. . . . This is an excellent summary of current knowledge and will remain the standard reference work for a long time to come.”—Stephen Harris, New Scientist “This is the place to find almost any fact you want about wolves.”—Stephen Mills, BBC Wildlife Magazine

Book Databases Information Systems and Peer to Peer Computing

Download or read book Databases Information Systems and Peer to Peer Computing written by Karl Aberer and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-03-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peer-to-peer(P2P)computingiscurrentlyattractingenormousmediaattention, spurred by the popularity of ?le sharing systems such as Napster, Gnutella and Morpheus. In P2P systems a very large number of autonomous computing nodes (the peers) pool together their resources and rely on each other for data and services. The wealth of business opportunities promised by P2P networks has gene- ted much industrial interest recently, and has resulted in the creation of various industrial projects, startup companies, and special interest groups. Researchers from distributed computing, networks, agents and databases have also become excited about the P2P vision, and papers tackling open problems in this area have started appearing in high-quality conferences and workshops. Much of the recent research on P2P systems seems to be carried out by - search groups with a primary interest in distributed computation and networks. This workshop concentrated on the impact that current database research can have on P2P computing and vice versa. Although researchers in distributed data structures and databases have been working on related issues for a long time, the developed techniques are simply not adequate for the new paradigm.

Book excerpt: Wild and unpredictable, brother to the sea, older than the creatures that walk the earth or swim in her waters, the Changer delights in countless shapes. When someone attempts to wipe out his family, the Changer discards coyote form and descends from the wilderness to call in a few favors from none other than King Arthur himself. But Arthur has problems of his own. The Lustrum Review is about to meet and the tenuous accord that holds the athanor community in loose alliance is being challenged. Some of the challengers merely desire to see a few restrictions dropped. Others wish to see the Accord destroyed – and if Arthur and his closest allies are destroyed with it, they would be delighted. For Arthur, the Changer’s arrival, ominous as it may be could also be a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how the Accord serves even the most ancient among their immortal community. He also hopes that their alliance will serve to anchor this wild one more firmly to his cause. Yet nothing is ever that simple. Before the Changer takes his revenge, those who have called themselves gods and have been the root of many a heroic legend will find themselves threatened with destruction. The very earth itself will shake. And a coyote pup―sole survivor of the Changer’s murdered family―will discover both her weakness and her hidden strength. New to this edition of Changer―special introduction by the author!
