Book Improvement Era Vol 32

Download or read book Improvement Era Vol 32 written by Herber J. Grant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improvement Era, Vol. 32: July, 1929 O save my newspaper creditors from loss, I went to Hollywood and labored among the Flesh Pots. I made a score of motion. Pictures, most of them flops because I had a most uncanny facility for roiling the very persons whom I should have made my friends. I wrote a couple of books which my publishers refused. I fought with them in consequence, still taking life by strong-arm methods. I wrote many stories that editors rejected. I fought with them, too. When an editor wouldn't buy a certain story I sat down to my typewriter and contrived to tell him that I thought him an ass. I even told _the editor of The American Magazine that he was an ass - inspite of which he showed his caliber by taking my Opinion as painlessly as possible and going right along buying and publishing my better submissions. That hurt worse than if he had fought with me. 'you see, I had the unfortunate complex that the attainment Of success meant a knock-down-and-drag-out scrap. It made me a lone wolf at life, getting the least bit mangy as I reached my forties. Time after time I tried sincerely to correct my psychology and get back certain religious (not theological) cues I felt I had lost with the passing of boyhood. I plunged deeper than ever into eleven-pound volumes on all sorts of race traits and behaviorism. It was a walking exposition of how a man may reach middle life and be the worst internal mess that ever got into Who's Who. Book A Room of One s Own

Download or read book A Room of One s Own written by Virginia Woolf and published by Modernista. This book was released on 2024-05-30 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf's playful exploration of a satirical »Oxbridge« became one of the world's most groundbreaking writings on women, writing, fiction, and gender. A Room of One's Own [1929] can be read as one or as six different essays, narrated from an intimate first-person perspective. Actual history blends with narrative and memoir. But perhaps most revolutionary was its address: the book is written by a woman for women. Male readers are compelled to read through women's eyes in a total inversion of the traditional male gaze. VIRGINIA WOOLF [1882–1941] was an English author. With novels like Jacob’s Room [1922], Mrs Dalloway [1925], To the Lighthouse [1927], and Orlando [1928], she became a leading figure of modernism and is considered one of the most important English-language authors of the 20th century. As a thinker, with essays like A Room of One’s Own [1929], Woolf has influenced the women’s movement in many countries.

Book Boom s Blues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wim Verbei
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2017-05-09
  • ISBN : 1496812514
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Boom s Blues written by Wim Verbei and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boom's Blues stands as both a remarkable biography of J. Frank G. Boom (1920–1953) and a recovery of his incredible contribution to blues scholarship originally titled The Blues: Satirical Songs of the North American Negro. Wim Verbei tells how and when the Netherlands was introduced to African American blues music and describes the equally dramatic and peculiar friendship that existed between Boom and jazz critic and musicologist Will Gilbert, who worked for the Kultuurkamer during World War II and had been charged with the task of formulating the Nazi's Jazzverbod, the decree prohibiting the public performance of jazz. Boom's Blues ends with the annotated and complete text of Boom's The Blues, providing the international world at last with an English version of the first book-length study of the blues. At the end of the 1960s, a series of thirteen blues paperbacks edited by Paul Oliver for the London publisher November Books began appearing. One manuscript landed on his desk that had been written in 1943 by a then twenty-three-year-old Amsterdammer, Frank (Frans) Boom. Its publication, to which Oliver gave the title Laughing to Keep from Crying, was announced on the back jacket of the last three Blues Paperbacks in 1971 and 1972. Yet it never was published and the manuscript once more disappeared. In October 1996, Dutch blues expert and publicist Verbei went in search of the presumably lost manuscript and the story behind its author. It only took him a couple of months to track down the manuscript, but it took another ten years to glean the full story behind the extraordinary Frans Boom, who passed away in 1953 in Indonesia.
