Book Mozart Maria Mountains The Insiders Guide to Salzburg

Download or read book Mozart Maria Mountains The Insiders Guide to Salzburg written by Yvonne Salisbury and published by Yvonne Salisbury. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mozart, Maria and Mountains DescriptionOriginally 2 books written by herself, Yvonne has combined them under one title "Mozart, Maria and Mountains" to make this complete guide to the Bavarian Alps area around Salzburg and Berchtesgaden.Salzburg is a compact city, despite being the fourth largest city in Austria. Situated at the edge of the Alps, most of Salzburg's main attractions are conveniently located near the old town. It is the old town that has the most charm with narrow streets that lead to cobbled squares. With castles, churches, markets and a variety of shops there is plenty to see and do in Salzburg. It is a beautiful city, famous for Mozart and The Sound of Music and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. Since much of the old town is a pedestrian zone and relatively small, it is ideal for walking and window shopping - it only takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end to the other.Nestling in the South East of the German Alps in the Berchtesgadener Land National Park, the Berchtesgaden is popular with tourists all year round. Located just 30 kilometres from Salzburg and 180 kilometres from Munich, Berchtesgaden is easily accessible. It is surrounded by Mount Watzmann, Germany's third highest mountain, the Kehlstein and nearby is the glacial lake of Königssee. There are a variety of sights and sports to be either watched or tried at all times of the year, whatever the weather. In summer the area is popular for walking and hiking and in winter you can try almost every winter sport imaginable including skiing, bobsleigh and snow shoe walking. The Berchtesgaden area is an ideal holiday destination, whether you are a couple looking for a peaceful, picturesque location or a family who wants to make the most of the sights and the sports that are on offer. You're not here for a long time, just a good time and Insiders' Guides show you how. All of the detailed information you need is here about restaurants, sports, sightseeing and the history of the area. This is a must have volume for anyone really wanting to make the most of their Alpine holiday. All information has been gathered personally, not found on Wikipedia and such like, that's what makes our Insiders' Guides unique.Written by Bavaria and Salzburg expert Yvonne Salisbury, it provides reviews, photographs, and advice for all the family, plus tips on what to see and do in this beautiful area.Revised and updated September 2017

Book Phraseology and Culture in English

Download or read book Phraseology and Culture in English written by Paul Skandera and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposition that there is a correlation between language and culture or culture-specific ways of thinking can be traced back to the views of Herder and von Humboldt in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It is generally accepted today that a language, especially its lexicon, influences its speakers' cultural patterns of thought and perception in various ways, for example through a culture-specific segmentation of the extralinguistic reality, the frequency of occurrence of particular lexical items, or the existence of keywords or key word combinations revealing core cultural values. The aim of this volume is to explore the cultural dimension of a wide range of preconstructed or semi-preconstructed word combinations in English. The 17 papers of the volume are divided into four sections, focusing on particular lexemes (e.g. enjoy and its collocates), types of word combinations (e.g. proverbs and similes), use-related varieties (such as the language of tourism or answering-machine messages), and user-related varieties (such as Aboriginal English or African English). The sections are preceded by a prologue, tracing the development of the study of formulaic language, and followed by an epilogue, which draws together the threads laid out in the various papers. The relation between language and culture in general has been explored in a number of important works over the past ten years. However, the study of the relation between English phraseology and culture in particular has been largely neglected. This volume is the first book-length publication devoted entirely to this topic.

Book Vigilantism Against Migrants and Minorities

Download or read book Vigilantism Against Migrants and Minorities written by Tore Bjørgo and published by Taylor & Francis Group. This book was released on 2019 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This edited volume traces the rise of far right vigilante movements - some who have been involved in serious violence against minorities, migrants and other vulnerable groups in society, whereas other vigilantes are intimidating but avoid using violence. Written by an international team of contributors, the book features case studies from Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North America, and Asia. Each chapter is written to a common research template examining the national social and political context, the purpose of the vigilante group, how it is organised and operates, its communications and social media strategy and its relationship to mainstream social actors and institutions, and to similar groups in other countries. The final comparative chapter explores some of the broader research issues such as under which conditions such vigiliantism emerges, flourishes or fails, policing approaches, masculinity, the role of social media, responses from the state and civil society, and the evidence of transnational co-operation or inspiration. This is a groundbreaking volume which will be of particular interest to scholars with an interest in the extreme right, social movements, political violence, policing and criminology"--

Book excerpt: A collection of extracts from 26 autobiographies by German-Jewish women on the Nazi period in Germany and the problems of emigration. The introduction (pp. 1-8) notes that Nazi brutality operated in a special way against Jewish married women, who "were singled out and targeted as mediators of Nazi policies"; for example, after "Kristallnacht" they were forced to secure emigration papers in order to obtain the release of their husbands from concentration camps. Mentions that in 1939 there remained in Germany 135 Jewish women for every 100 Jewish men, suggesting that more men fled abroad.

Download or read book Raquel the Jewess of Toledo written by Lion Feuchtwanger and published by Makom Publications. This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The King became passionately enamored with a Jewess who was called by the name of Fermosa, meaning The Beautiful, and he forgot his wife. And he shut himself up with the Jewess for almost seven full years, forgetful of himself, and of his realm also, and paying no heed to any other thing." - Alfonso el Sabio, "Cronica General," c. 1270. This is a haunting love story of Alfonso VIII, the Christian King of Castile, and Raquel, the beautiful Jewess of Toledo, two lovers trapped by the bitterness and conflict of their times in a tragic alliance. Raquel was the daughter of Yehuda, a wealthy, proud aristocrat, who had come from Seville with his family to serve as Alfonso's Minister of Finance. His mission was to replenish the country's depleted treasury, but he saw in this assignment an opportunity to prevent war between the Christian North and the Moslem South and in the process to save his own people, the Jews, from being crushed between these two ruthless forces. But when the impetuous Alfonso fell in love with Raquel and demanded her as his mistress, Yehuda had to choose between his daughter's future and the fate of his people. In this epic romance of the lovers and their bitter destinies, Lion Feuchtwanger, one of the world's great historical novelists, has brilliantly recreated the drama and pageantry of the Middle Ages, rent with love and hate, cruelty and compassion, profanity and piety, bloodshed and ritual.
