Book Wittgenstein s Philosophical Investigations

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Philosophical Investigations written by Meredith Williams and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations is one of the great works of 20th Century philosophy, destined to join the philosophical canon. Like all great works of philosophy, it poses new problems, while creating new forms of argument and persuasion. But unlike most contemporary philosophy texts, it is not structured by chapter and section headings, but rather by numbered passages -- evidence of Wittgenstein's distinctive style and profound originality. This anthology draws together in one volume several recent essays that help to make his problems and arguments more accessible. The essays are grouped into four sections that roughly correspond to the development that one finds in the Investigations. These sections are: reference and meaning; rules and their application; the interiority of mind, and the alleged uses of private languages; and necessity and grammar. Both readers who are new to the Investigations as well as those who are familiar with Wittgenstein's work should find these essays illuminating and engaging.

Book Wittgenstein s Lasting Significance

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Lasting Significance written by Max Kölbel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) has exerted a more powerful influence on contemporary philosophy than any other twentieth-century thinker. But what is the nature of this influence and why has it proved so enduring? In Wittgenstein's Lasting Significance, twelve contemporary philosophers explore the issues surrounding Wittgenstein's importance and relevance to modern thought. Their articles, all of which are published here for the first time, cover the entirety of Wittgenstein's major publications: the Tracatus Logico-Philosophicus, Philosophical Investigations, On Certainty and Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics. They discuss how much originality and continuity can be found in Wittgenstein's thought, how he relates to current traditions and movements within philosophy, and what we can learn from his conceptions of language, knowledge, mathematics and logic. The international set of contributors are renowned for their work in both Wittgenstein studies and other fields of philosophy, making Wittgenstein's Lasting Significance an important collection for anyone interested in contemporary philosophy.

Book Wittgenstein and Modern Philosophy

Download or read book Wittgenstein and Modern Philosophy written by Justus Hartnack and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout his life, Ludwig Wittgenstein was concerned with the connection between philosophy and language, but his thinking falls into two distinct parts. In his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) he advanced the theory that language depicted reality; a word was meaningful if, and oly if, it wsa a name and pictured a fact. In his Cambridge lectures in the 1930s he completely repudiated this early theory, stating that whlie a word could be used sa a name, it could also be used n a variety of other ways. Language became the name of the class of an indefinite number of language-games related not by a single definable property, but by similarities that Wittgenstein called 'family resemblances.' The Tractatus had a great influence upon Logical Positivism; his later theories (expounded in Philosophical Investigations, posthumonously published in 1953) were instrumental in the founding of the 'analytical' school. Such a reversal nd rejection of one theory for a second, completley distinct and even more influential than the first, clearly marks out for Wittgenstein a unique place in the history of philosophy. Concentrating upon his two major works and the further development of analytic theory in the writings of Ryle, Strawson, Hart, and Urmson, the Danish philosopher Justus Hartnack has provided a general exposition of Wittgenstein's thought and its influence." --

Book Wittgenstein Aesthetics and Philosophy

Download or read book Wittgenstein Aesthetics and Philosophy written by Peter B. Lewis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although universally recognised as one of the greatest of modern philosophers, Wittgenstein's work in aesthetics has been unjustly neglected. This is the first book exclusively devoted to Wittgenstein's aesthetics, exploring the themes developed by Wittgenstein in his own writing on aesthetics as well as the implications of Wittgenstein's wider philosophical views for understanding central issues in aesthetics. Drawing together original contributions from leading international scholars, this book will be an important addition to studies of Wittgenstein's thought, but its discussion of issues in literature, music and performing art, and criticism will also be of interest to many students of literary and cultural studies. Exploring three key themes - the capacity of the arts to illuminate our lives; the nature of the particular responses involved in understanding and appreciating works of art; the role of theory and principle in artistic and critical practice - the contributors address issues raised by contemporary philosophers of art, and seek to make connections between Wittgenstein's work and that of other significant philosophies of art in the Western tradition. Displaying the best practice of modern philosophical writing - clarity, cogency, respect for but not blind obedience to common sense, argument illustrated with detailed examples, rejection of speculation and pretension - this book demonstrates how philosophy can make a valuable contribution to understanding the arts.

  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Wittgenstein written by Severin Schroeder and published by Polity. This book was released on 2006-03-31 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a lucid and highly readable account of Wittgenstein's philosophy, framed against the background of his extraordinary life and character. Woven together with a biographical narrative, the chapters explain the key ideas of Wittgenstein's work, from his first book, the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, to his mature masterpiece, the Philosophical Investigations. Severin Schroeder shows that at the core of Wittgenstein's later work lies a startlingly original and subversive conception of the nature of philosophy. In accordance with this conception, Wittgenstein offers no new philosophical doctrines to replace his earlier ones, but seeks to demonstrate how all philosophical theorizing is the result of conceptual misunderstanding. He first diagnoses such misunderstanding at the core of his own earlier philosophy of language and then subjects philosophical views and problems about various mental phenomena understanding, sensations, the will to a similar therapeutic analysis. Schroeder provides a clear and careful account of the main arguments offered by Wittgenstein. He concludes by considering some critical responses to Wittgenstein's work, assessing its legacy for contemporary philosophy. Wittgenstein is ideal for students seeking a clear and concise introduction to the work of this seminal twentieth-century philosopher.
