The many decent human beings who have noticed and experienced this diminishment of justice’s prestige find themselves in a thoroughly disenchanted existential situation. For them, the attempt to do justice without the illusion of being grounded in something beyond the sheer facticity of their own performances is a distinctly ethical theme, which cries out to be investigated in its own right. Heeding the cry, this book asks and attempts to answer the following fundamental ethical question: is a life in the law – even one spent in the pursuit of justice – worth living, and if so, how can a disenchanted person come to bear the living of it without constantly having to engage in self-deception? However, this textbook is the first of its kind, as it discusses the simple Gram stain procedure as a valuable tool for the detection of fungal elements. This book has been specifically designed for people working in the medical microbiology laboratory with little or no practical experience in medical mycology. The central idea presented in this textbook begins with the Gram stain for the detection of fungi; the most important and more frequently isolated opportunistic and potentially pathogenic fungal species have been included. The book contains more than three hundred color images, the majority of which come from direct smear examination, such as Gram stain and other staining procedures. The mold phase and the microscopic structure of the identified fungal species relating to the initial findings of the direct smear have been linked to avoid bias. When a fungal infection is present but not suspected clinically, the Gram stain may be the only clue to the true cause of the infection. Although there are better methods than the Gram stain for visualization of fungi, these methods are only performed if there is clinical suspicion for fungal disease. Clinicians often send specimens for bacterial culture, but they sometimes overlook requests for fungal culture. During such times, the Gram stain is the only technique available in the clinical microbiology laboratory for direct detection of fungi from these specimens. The presence of fungi should not be overlooked during the direct examination of the clinical specimens for bacteria. This book will guide the reader in the recognition and identification of fungal elements in gram-stained smears, especially when they are distorted and remain unstained and undetectable.This new textbook focuses on the detection and classification of fungal elements in Gram stains. Newly developed flowcharts, clues, and key details regarding structural characteristics have been added to guide the reader in the right direction.Throughout the years, the author has accumulated many scenarios in which fungal elements were not detected on the original Gram stain evaluation but were found to be positive upon review once the culture grew a fungus. Finally, the book contains a chapter with a practice examination including microscopic images representative of scenarios commonly encountered in the clinical microbiology laboratory.

Book excerpt: Martin Luther King, Jr. famously expressed his dream that his children would "one day not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." In his vision, a person's ethical qualities would be understood in spite of his or her body rather than through it. In general, we think that a person's actions should not be judged according to their physical features, such as race. In fact, we see evaluations based on a subject's race or other bodily traits as illegitimate. But Stain Removal argues that our perception of a person's actions always entails judgments of the body. It therefore challenges modern moral theory's premise that a subject's deeds and not its bodily traits count as primary objects of evaluation. Drawing on modern and pre-modern accounts of how ethical knowledge originates, from the Biblical story of Ham, to Socrates, Immanuel Kant, Alain Locke, Frantz Fanon, Langston Hughes, Onora O'Neill, and Louis Althusser, the book suggests that our recognition of both a person and that person's deeds demands an evaluative context. From this it proposes that all perception is "evaluative perception." Through the metaphor of the stain, J. Reid Miller traces the long history of thought suggesting that embodiments like race can and do signify ethical qualities. He argues that these qualities do not "attach" to subjects from the outside-like a stain on innocent and unraced beings-but are instead what allow us to see people as distinct ethical individuals. The objective of ethics, he shows, is not to determine whether race is good or bad but to illustrate how our "unique" personal traits emerge through our multiple relations to others. The consequence is that, contrary to King's vision, it is only through judgments of "skin" and other bodily features that the ethical "content" of subjects can be recognized.
