Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the West African Frontier Force, in Southern Nigeria Left England from Liverpool, on May 9th, in one of Messrs. Elder, Dempster Co.'s mail boats, the Glenda, which was to take me to the West Coast of Africa. It was typical English weather when we left - cold and wet, and it was not until five days later that we got into anything approaching warmth and sunshine. During those five cold days I realized that the Elder, Dempster boats were noted for many things, their size is small, their accommodation limited, the food is horrible, and the speed of these mail boats would always ensure an excellent race with an ordinary snail. Our first port of call was Sierra Leone which we reached on May arst, disembarking a few passengers and taking on board a great number of natives for destinations further down the coast. We did not stay many hours there, and left in the afternoon, and proceeded down the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Nigeria Nationalism and Writing History

Download or read book Nigeria Nationalism and Writing History written by Toyin Falola and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the history of writing about Nigeria since the nineteenth century, with an emphasis on the rise of nationalist historiography and the leading themes. The second half of the twentieth century saw the publication of massive amounts of literature on Nigeria by Nigerian and non-Nigerian historians. This volume reflects on that literature, focusing on those works by Nigerians in thecontext of the rise and decline of African nationalist historiography. Given the diminishing share in the global output of literature on Africa by African historians, it has become crucial to reintroduce Africans into historicalwriting about Africa. As the authors attempt here to rescue older voices, they also rehabilitate a stale historiography by revisiting the issues, ideas, and moments that produced it. This revivalism also challenges Nigerian historians of the twenty-first century to study the nation in new ways, to comprehend its modernity, and to frame a new set of questions on Nigeria's future and globalization. In spite of current problems in Nigeria and its universities, that historical scholarship on Nigeria (and by extension, Africa) has come of age is indisputable. From a country that struggled for Western academic recognition in the 1950s to one that by the 1980s had emerged as one of the most studied countries in Africa, Nigeria is not only one of the early birthplaces of modern African history, but has also produced members of the first generation of African historians whose contributions to the development and expansion of modern African history is undeniable. Like their counterparts working on other parts of the world, these scholars have been sensitive to the need to explore virtually all aspects of Nigerian history. The book highlights the careers of some of Nigeria's notable historians of the first and second generation. Toyin Falola is Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities and University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Saheed Aderinto is Assistant Professor of History at Western Carolina University.

Book Loanwords in the World s Languages

Download or read book Loanwords in the World s Languages written by Martin Haspelmath and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2009-12-22 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to address the question of what kinds of words get borrowed in a systematic and comparative perspective. It studies lexical borrowing behavior on the basis of a world-wide sample of 40 languages, both major languages and minor languages, and both languages with heavy borrowing and languages with little lexical influence from other languages. The book is the result of a five-year project bringing together a unique group of specialists of many different languages and areas. The introductory chapters provide a general up-to-date introduction to language contact at the word level, as well as a presentation of the project's methodology. All the chapters are based on samples of 1000-2000 words, elicited by a uniform meaning list of 1460 meanings. The combined database, comprising over 70,000 words, is published online at the same time as the book is published. For each word, information about loanword status is given in the database, and the 40 case studies in the book describe the social and historical contact situations in detail. The final chapter draws general conclusions about what kinds of words tend to get borrowed, what kinds of word meanings are particularly resistant to borrowing, and what kinds of social contact situations lead to what kinds of borrowing situations.
