Excerpt: ...held chiefly the western sector of the loop. The fighting continued, always increasing in ferocity. The Bulgarians understood only too well that grim game of chess Field-Marshal Mishit ch was playing among the Chuke heights. Every day the wounded came down from the hills, on mules with cunningly contrived chairs and stretchers, and in rough, springless supply and ammunition carts. But every day there was another hill gained. The Serbian Army was forging far ahead of its Allied left; Monastir was coming nearer and nearer--and so long as it fell what did the price matter? In the meantime, while the Serbs were performing miracles on the Chuke heights in spite of the difficulty of getting up supplies and ammunition in winter, the Italians were snowbound among the mountains that stretched to Lake Prespa in the west, and the French were wallowing in mud on the Monastir plain. An assault on the Kenali line in mid-October in the presence of Sarrail and his staff having failed to achieve any result, on November 14th, after a heavy bombardment all along the enemy lines that began on the 13th and lasted twenty-four hours, General Sarrail ordered a general attack. The Italians did what they could in the snow, the Russians also joined in the fray, and the French themselves made a desperate effort, in pouring rain, to turn the formidable Kenali position, which the Serbian advance had now made into a salient. It was a brave effort and the moment chosen, a wet and misty November day after snow, was certainly one on which the enemy was hardly likely to expect an infantry attack. But the Franco-Russian troops got into difficulties with the mud, which in this region is of the stickiest and most objectionable kind, and were met with such heavy machine-gun...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extra-illustrated copy of With the Serbs in Macedonia by Douglas Walshe (London: John Lane The Bodley Head; New York: John Lane Company, MCMXX [1920]), containing Walshe's account of the British campaign in the Balkans while serving with the 708 Company Motor Transport attached to the Serbian Army in Macedonia during World War I, enhanced with 59 gelatin silver snapshots by Margaret English, a British Army nursing sister. The Allied Powers, principally Britain and France, had set up the Macedonian Front based in Salonika (now Thessalonikē) to protect Serbia from attack by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria; and English was assigned here, to the 37th General Hospital near Vertekop (now Skydra) during 1917-1919. English used her copy of Walshe's book as a scrapbook, affixing 55 small snapshots on the empty versos of the nine plates, blank endleaves, and blank portions of text pages; an additional four snapshots are laid in, as well as an undated newspaper clipping (probably from the late 1930s or early 1940s) containing an extract from Demosthenes's address to the Athenians on the occupation by the armies of Philip II of Macedon, drawing a parallel to Hitler's identical tactics of threats, occupation, and eventual take-over. The photographs document her life at 37th General Hospital, a tented village with 1600 beds, and one of five British hospitals on the Salonika front, serving wounded Serbs and Bulgarian prisoners of war who would arrive by train at the nearby station. One photo shows a line of French soldiers doing their laundry. Also included are two long view of the hospital's rows of white tents as seen from the railway station; and an aerial shot of the hospital, its borders clearly marked with large red crosses visible from the air. Another photo of two troopships suggests that English sailed to Alexandria aboard the British transport ship, H.M.T. "Saxon," where she boarded the H.M.T. "Menominee" for the final leg of the voyage to Salonika. Many of the photos are groups of English's co-workers--other military nurses, doctors, and officers (Major Alfred Barnes, Captain Greenwood, Sisters Hughes and Garrett)--standing in front of their tents, celebrating Boxing Day in 1917, or on leave at Lake Ostrovo in western Macedonia; as well as the Serbian patients they treated. Other photos portray the isolation of the hospital village amid rugged mountains, accessible by rutted unpaved roads, the closest towns being Vertekop and Vodena, poor villages of stone walls, unpaved streets, and open sewers. Peasants work herding sheep, driving donkeys, gathering charcoal and firewood, and women spin wool yarn as they walk or go about their chores, a drop spindle in their free hand. There are also shots of a farmer tilling his field with a primitive wooden plow pulled by two oxen, a street vendor selling the drink known as "sherbert" from a large pitcher on his back, and a Macedonian man in typical dress standing in front of his shop in Vodena. English photographed the ornate gilded interior of the church at Vodena, and the 14th-century Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles in Salonika, as well as the graves of nurses killed during a German bombing of the hospital that took place on March 12, 1917. On the back of one of the photos, dated Feb. 1919, English notes that it is her "last day at 37."

Book Yugoslavia and Macedonia Before Tito

Download or read book Yugoslavia and Macedonia Before Tito written by Nada Boskovska and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-27 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Held together by apparatchiks and, later, Tito's charisma, Yugoslavia never really incorporated separate Balkan nationalisms into the Pan-Slavic ideal. Macedonia - frequently ignored by Belgrade - had survived centuries of Turkish domination, Bulgarian invasion and Serbian assimilation before it became part of the Yugoslav project in the aftermath of the First World War. Drawing on an extensive analysis of archival material, private correspondence, and newspaper articles, Nada Boskovska provides an arresting account of the Macedonian experience of the interwar years, charting the growth of political consciousness and the often violent state-driven attempts to curb autonomy. Sketching the complex picture of nationalism within a multi-ethnic, but unitarist state through a comprehensive analysis of policy, economy, and education, Yugoslavia and Macedonia before Tito is the first book to describe the uneasy and often turbulent relationship between a Serbian-dominated government and an increasingly politically aware Macedonian people. Concerned with the question of integration and political manipulation, Boskovska gives credence to voices critical of Royal Yugoslavia and offers a fresh insight into domestic policy and the Macedonian question, going beyond traditional high politics. Broadening the spectrum of discussion and protest, she reveals the voices of a people protesting constitutional and electoral fraud, the neglect of local needs and state machinations designed to create a satellite province.

Book The Contest for Macedonian Identity 1870 1912

Download or read book The Contest for Macedonian Identity 1870 1912 written by Nick Anastasovski and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Contest For Macedonian Identity 1870-1912 is a scholarly book detailing the ongoing campaigns to divide and conquer the Macedonian people - first by the Ottoman Empire under which Macedonia was colonized by Muslims and many Macedonians converted to Islam; and then by Greece, Serbia and Bulgaria as they fought to turn Macedonians into Greeks, Serbs and Bulgarians using State-sponsored teachers, priests, bandits and terrorists. The Contest For Macedonian Identity examines in detail this fierce competition, and how it was fought at the political, religious, educational, and day-to-day village level. It analyzes Ottoman, Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian, Macedonian and other sources and introduces new and original research by the author from the Bitola region, western Macedonia, and many other parts of ethnic and Ottoman Macedonia. This is a definitive work on the occupation of Macedonia in the modern era and the development and defence of the Macedonian identity. With 520 pages and a large format, The Contest for Macedonian Identity 1870-1912 is a big, generous book, well researched and easy to read.

Book Macedonia and the Macedonians

Download or read book Macedonia and the Macedonians written by Andrew Rossos and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, every power that has aspired to dominate the Balkans, a crucial crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa, has sought to control Macedonia. But although Macedonia has figured prominently in history, its name was largely absent from the historical stage, representing only a disputed territory of indeterminate boundaries, until the nineteenth century. Successive invaders— Roman, Gothic, Hun, Slav, Ottoman— passed through or subjugated the area and incorporated it into their respective dynastic or territorial empires. This detailed volume surveys the history of Macedonia from 600 BC to the present day, with an emphasis on the past two centuries. It reveals how the "Macedonian question" has long dominated Balkan politics and how, for nearly two centuries, it was the central issue dividing Balkan peoples, as neighboring nations struggled for possession of Macedonia and denied any distinct Macedonian identity— territorial, political, ethnic, or national. The author concludes that Balkan acceptance of a Macedonian identity, nation, and state has become a necessity for stability in the Balkans and in a united Europe.
