The German General Staff, it is true, has produced valuable studies of certain episodes of the fighting in Russia, but from the point of view of our Ally there has been little or nothing. In September he accompanied a cavalry division in a raid in South-West Poland, and retired with it before Hindenburg's first offensive against Warsaw (Chapter III.). In the following months he was with the Guard Corps at the battle of Ivangorod, and in the subsequent Russian counter-offensive towards Krakau (Chapter Iv.). Some account derived from eye-witnesses is given of the operation of Lodz (Chapter V.), of the disaster to the Russian 10th Army in February, 1915, and of the operations on the Narev in the winter of that year (Chapter VI.). As such, he had a ringside seat on the scantily-recorded eastern front of the war. Knox witnessed such major events as the 1914 Battle of Tannenberg, in which Hindenburg and Ludendorff routed the Russian invasion of East Prussia, and the subsequent fighting in Poland around Warsaw and Cracow. The author was forced to flee Poland with the retreating Russians in 1915, and in 1916 saw the successful Russian offensive led by the brilliant General Brusilov. The book tells of the political discontent that preceded the revolution, and of the revolution itself in March 1917. This led to the abdication of the Tsar and brought the moderate Kerensky to power.
