Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With the Persian Expedition Well, chiefly because in the beginning of 1918 Fate and the War Office sent me into a field of operations almost unknown and unheeded of the average home keeping Briton - via, that of north-west Persia, in the land lying towards the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea; and my experiences there led me into bypaths of the Great War so unusual as to seem well worth describing, quite apart from the military importance of the movements of which they were but a minute part. However, in the latter aspect, too, I hope my book will serve as a useful footnote to the history of the gigantic struggle now happily ended. Book The Persian Expedition

Download or read book The Persian Expedition written by Xenophon and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Persian Expedition", Xenophon, a young Athenian noble who sought his destiny abroad, provides an enthralling eyewitness account of the attempt by a Greek mercenary army - the Ten Thousand - to help Prince Cyrus overthrow his brother and take the Persian throne. When the Greeks were then betrayed by their Persian employers, they were forced to march home through hundreds of miles of difficult terrain - adrift in a hostile country and under constant attack from the unforgiving Persians and warlike tribes. In this outstanding description of endurance and individual bravery, Xenophon, one of those chosen to lead the retreating army, provides a vivid narrative of the campaign and its aftermath, and his account remains one of the best pictures we have of Greeks confronting a 'barbarian' world.

Book The Anabasis Or Expedition of Cyrus and the Memorabilia of Socrates

Download or read book The Anabasis Or Expedition of Cyrus and the Memorabilia of Socrates written by J. S. Watson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anabasis, or Expedition of Cyrus, and the Memorabilia of Socrates: Literally Tr From the Greek of Xenophon A Biographical Notice of Xenophon is prefixed to the second volume of this translation. Some remarks are here offered on the authorship of the "Anabasis." A passage of the "Hellenica," in which it is said that a narrative of the Expedition of Cyrus was written by Themistogenes of Syracuse, has given rise to the question whether the account of that expedition which we now have is that of Xenophon or that of Themistogenes. When Xenophon, in the course of his narrative of events relating to Greece, comes to the time at which the expedition of Cyrus took place, he says, "How Cyrus collected an army, how he marched up the country with it against his brother, how the battle was fought, how Cyrus was killed, and how the Greeks afterwards effected a safe retreat to the sea, has been written by Themistogenes the Syracusan." If the phrase containing it be translated, with Morus, quae nominatur aut laudatur in Histora Graeca, a sense is given to the verb for which there is no authority; and if it be rendered, with most interpreters, quae inserta legitur historiis Graecis, that is said which is not true. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With this first masterpiece of Western military history forming the backbone of his book, Robin Waterfield explores what remains unsaid and assumed in Xenophon's account - much about the gruesome nature of ancient battle and logistics, the lives of Greek and Persian soldiers, and questions of historical, political, and personal context, motivation, and conflicting agendas. The result is a rounded version of the story of Cyrus's ill-fated march and the Greeks' perilous retreat - a nuanced and dramatic perspective on a critical moment in history that may tell us as much about our present-day adventures in the Middle East, site of Cyrus's debacle and the last act of the Golden Age, as it does about the great powers of antiquity in a volatile period of transition."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The riveting, definitive account of the ancient Greek city of Thebes, by the acclaimed author of The Spartans—now in paperback Among the extensive writing available about the history of ancient Greece, there is precious little about the city-state of Thebes. At one point the most powerful city in ancient Greece, Thebes has been long overshadowed by its better-known rivals, Athens and Sparta. In Thebes: The Forgotten City of Ancient Greece, acclaimed classicist and historian Paul Cartledge brings the city vividly to life and argues that it is central to our understanding of the ancient Greeks’ achievements—whether politically or culturally—and thus to the wider politico-cultural traditions of western Europe, the Americas, and indeed the world. From its role as an ancient political power, to its destruction at the hands of Alexander the Great as punishment for a failed revolt, to its eventual restoration by Alexander’s successor, Cartledge deftly chronicles the rise and fall of the ancient city. He recounts the history with deep clarity and mastery for the subject and makes clear both the di?erences and the interconnections between the Thebes of myth and the Thebes of history. Written in clear prose and illustrated with images in two color inserts, Thebes is a gripping read for students of ancient history and those looking to experience the real city behind the myths of Cadmus, Hercules, and Oedipus.

Book The Landmark Xenophon s Anabasis

Download or read book The Landmark Xenophon s Anabasis written by Xenophon and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2021-12-07 with total page 673 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Landmark Xenophon’s Anabasis is the definitive edition of the ancient classic—also known as The March of the Ten Thousand or The March Up-Country—which chronicles one of the greatest true-life adventures ever recorded. As Xenophon’s narrative opens, the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger is marshaling an army to usurp the throne from his brother Artaxerxes the King. When Cyrus is killed in battle, ten thousand Greek soldiers he had hired find themselves stranded deep in enemy territory, surrounded by forces of a hostile Persian king. When their top generals are arrested, the Greeks have to elect new leaders, one of whom is Xenophon, a resourceful and courageous Athenian who leads by persuasion and vote. What follows is his vivid account of the Greeks’ harrowing journey through extremes of territory and climate, inhabited by unfriendly tribes who often oppose their passage. Despite formidable obstacles, they navigate their way to the Black Sea coast and make their way back to Greece. This masterful new translation by David Thomas gives color and depth to a story long studied as a classic of military history and practical philosophy. Edited by Shane Brennan and David Thomas, the text is supported with numerous detailed maps, annotations, appendices, and illustrations. The Landmark Xenophon’s Anabasis offers one of the classical Greek world’s seminal tales to readers of all levels.

Book Xenophon s Expedition of Cyrus

Download or read book Xenophon s Expedition of Cyrus written by Charles Dexter Cleveland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-11 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Xenophon's Expedition of Cyrus: With English Notes, Prepared for the Use of Schools and Colleges, With a Life of the Author The events connected with the two succeeding years of our author's life, which are minutely detailed in the Anabasis, are eminently interesting. In those two years he reaped the proudest honors, - henors which the most victorious generali the world has seen, well might envy. To have entered the ter ritory of a powerful foreign monarch to have subdued him battle after battle; to have pushed a conquering career to the farthest confines of his empire, were indeed splendid achievements for a youthful king. But the army of Alexander was comparatively a numerous one. The country through which he marched pre sented few obstacles. He conquered as he went. He left no enemy in his rear. But he lived not to see again his native land. Subduing all but himself, he died at last, a prey to his own evil passions, ingloriously at Babylon.
