(John Henry) Patterson, the Author: With his reputation, livelihood and safety at stake, Patterson, an experienced tiger hunter from his military service in India, undertook an extensive effort to deal with the crisis and after months of attempts and near misses, finally killed the first lion on the night of December 9, 1898 and killed the second one on the morning of December 29 (narrowly escaping death when he was charged by the wounded animal). ...Blyth amid rumours of murder and an affair, and although he was never officially charged or censured, this incident would follow him for years afterward in British society, and was most notably referenced in the film The Macomber Affair (1947) which was based on Ernest Hemingway's adaptation of the incident. It is often thought that it was this incident (along with the anti-semitic issues he encountered from the British military establishment during World War I - when he was in command of the Jewish Legion) which led Patterson to eventually disassociate himself from British society and ally himself with those of the Jewish faith and their pursuit of a permanent homeland.

The result of such doctrine placed the Jew in a most pathetic and singular position. As a good citizen, he participated in the fights for independence, and as a progressive, he was an adherent of the new science of anthropology. But when the struggle was over and his native country succeeded in its fight for independence, he was declared to be of a different race and nationality. Germany is for the Germanic race! Was the universal cry of the Fatherland. The Jew being of Semitic origin, naturally can have no claim on German soil. Anti-semitism, therefore, was the logical outcome of the new teaching. The Reform tion in Germany and elsewhere had illuminated the minds of the people, but had not softened their hearts. Luther, the creator of the Reforma tion. Was not in sympathy with the followers of an alien faith. The cultured Jew of Germany found himself between the anvil and the hammer. He could not consistently deny his Semitic origin, and would not accept the conclusion of the anti-semites, to relinquish his claim on his native country, having helped proportionately more than any other class of people to weld the new empire. The idea that Juda ism is merely a religious confession, as taught by the Mendelssohnian School, has indeed brought the adaptation of the Western European Jews as far as possible to the manners and aspirations of the dominant nationality among which they lived, but as a remedy against anti Semitism it turned out to be an illusion. A blind hatred of Jews which baffled all attempts of enlightenment was in progress in spite of the earnest desire to sacrifice their inner conviction to merge as com pletely as posible with the masses of their fellow-citizens; their honest efforts were spurned in contempt. Some of these went into the professions, others contributed to the expansion of the export trade, while others again, settling in the towns of Jaffa and Haifa, acquired property and plantations, Opened workshops, built houses, and laid the foundations of a new commercial life. It was these settlers who did most for the expansion of Tel Aviv, and who began to found there a new commercial organisation which exercised a strong influence on the whole of the Yishub. The progress of this section was displayed most conspicuously in the increase of land purchase and of the sums devoted to this purpose. This class also furthered the development of the colonies, where they acquired property, built houses, laid out plantations, promoted commerce, and took an active part in the public life which was ripening there. A special class of immigrants was formed by the school children, who were either sent by their parents alone to Palestine in order to receive there a national education, or for whose sakes the parents themselves came over. The best testimony to the attraction of Palestine for the studious youth of Jewry is afforded by the rapid growth of the Hebrew Gymnasium in Jaffa, alongside of which should be mentioned the Modern School in Haifa, the Hebrew High School in Jerusalem, and the Bezalel Arts and Crafts school in Jerusalem, as in these also there were a number of pupils from abroad. The Jaffa Gymnasium had in 1914, the eighth year of its existence, 750 pupils, who brought francs monthly into the country. The yearly expenditure of the Gymnasium, three-quarters of which was defrayed from the fees of the children from abroad, amounted to francs. The financial importance of this immigration is further shown by the fact that in addition to the fees about francs came into the country from abroad for the maintenance of these children.
