Book U S Marines in the Persian Gulf 1990 1991

Download or read book U S Marines in the Persian Gulf 1990 1991 written by Steven M. Zimmeck and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph tells the story of the Marines and sailors of the 1St Force Service Support Group, the 2d Force Service Support Group, Marine Wing Support Group 37, and the 3d Naval Construction Regiment whose combined efforts gave the I Marine Expeditionary Force the ability to eject Iraqi forces from Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. This document is part of a preliminary series of official Marine Corps histories that cover Marine Corps operations in the Gulf War. During the Persian Gulf crisis, the History and Museums Division sent a team to Saudi Arabia to produce first-hand accounts of unit operations. In November 1990, five Reserve officers from the Mobilization Training Unit (MTU) (History)-DC-7 arrived in Saudi Arabia, deployed to different commands, accompanied their units throughout the battle, and produced powerful narratives on the operations of I Marine Expeditionary Force, the 1st Marine Division, the 2d Marine Division, and Marine Forces Afloat. Unforeseen circumstances prevented a logistics history from being included in the series, so the Secretary of the Navy recalled Major Steven M. Zimmeck, USMC (Ret), to active duty to complete this account of Marine Corps combat service support in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. This monograph is predominantly based upon documentation collected during and immediately after Desert Shield and Desert Storm.

Book Band Of Brothers The 2d Marine Division And The Tiger Brigade In The Persian Gulf War

Download or read book Band Of Brothers The 2d Marine Division And The Tiger Brigade In The Persian Gulf War written by Major Craig A. Tucker and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is an analysis of the impact of organizational culture on tactical joint warfare. The merger of the Tiger Brigade with 2d Marine Division during the Persian Gulf War serves as a laboratory for this analysis. The author researched after action reports, the papers of authors who have written on the Persian Gulf War and interviewed commanders and key staff of both units to determine whether differences in service culture reduced the combat effectiveness of either unit. This research is analyzed using a recently developed organizational theory that postulates that the human element is the most important and least understood factor in determining whether a merger between two organizations with different cultures will succeed or fail. This study concludes that the merger of the Tiger Brigade and 2d Marine Division was very successful. The key elements to that success were the relationship between the commanders, the effectiveness of liaison officers, the willingness of both units to learn from and understand the culture of the other and the amount of time available before actual combat to reduce cultural barriers.

Unit command chronologies and interviews recorded by the Battlefield Assessment Team served as the basis of a comment edition which was sent out to key participants in the events depicted. These comments were then incorporated into the final narrative. This methodology produced a history that approaches the accuracy and vigor of the MTU's first-hand accounts. Download or read book With the 1st Marine Division in Desert Shield and Desert Storm U S Marines in the Persian Gulf 1990 1991 Khafji Weapons Systems Combat Engineer Breaching Equipment Training with Saudi Army written by U. S. Military and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique monograph is an accounting of the role of the 1st Marine Division in the Persian Gulf War from August 1990 to April 1991. It is one of a series also covering the operations of I Marine Expeditionary Force, the 2d Marine Division, the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marines afloat in Desert Shield and Desert Storm, and humanitarian relief operations in northern Iraq and Turkey. When the History and Museums Division began the historical collection effort concerning Marine activities in the Persian Gulf region, it called upon the members of Mobilization Training Unit (History) DC-7, of which the author, Lieutenant Colonel Charles H. Cureton, has been a member since 1983. This small organization of Individual Ready Reserve officers is the Marine Corps Reserve unit that provides historians, combat artists, archivists, and museum specialists in support of History and Museums Division programs. Most of its members have standard military occupational specialties and have subsequently gained in their civilian pursuits the additional qualifications necessary to serve in the unit. About half of its members served in Vietnam. During the Persian gulf conflict, seven MTU DC-7 officers were on active duty and five served in the Gulf. The first Marine Reserve historians to arrive in theater were Colonel Charles J. Quilter, Commanding Officer of MTU DC-7, and Lieutenant Colonel Cureton, who landed in Saudi Arabia on 9 November 1990. Colonel Quilter was designated Command Historian of I Marine Expeditionary Force and Lieutenant Colonel Cureton became Deputy Command Historian. Over the next five months Lieutenant Colonel Cureton organized the document collection effort of I MEF headquarters, wrote the historical annex to the I MEF offensive operations plan, co-wrote I MEF Command Chronologies, and crisscrossed the entire Marine area of operations. As a result of his background as a tracked vehicle officer, Lieutenant Colonel Cureton transferred to the 1st Marine Division in mid-January to cover Marine land force operations. He participated in the first ground operation of the war (the artillery raid on the night of 20-21 January 1991), headed the division's combat camera element, and joined Task Force Papa Bear (1st Marines) for the drive to liberate Kuwait.
