Book excerpt: Award-Winner in the Travel-Cultural category of the National Best Books 2008 Awards (sponsored by USA Book News), With Pythons & Head-Hunters in Borneo, The Quest For Mount Tiban, is a riveting piece of adventure writing. This is the thrilling narrative of the 2003 & 2006 journeys deep into the heart of Borneo, made by the author and his remarkable indigenous guides. This is a classic travel narrative – long river voyages and foot trekking expeditions with the ultimate goal of scaling the mysterious & allegedly haunted Mount Tiban located near the jungly border between Malaysia and Indonesia. Following in the footsteps of comedy-adventure writer Redmond O’Hanlon’s 1983 expedition, the author braves dangerous rivers, deadly disease, pestiferous insects, leeches, wild animals, venomous snakes & pythons in an attempt to become the first Westerner to scale Mount Tiban since naturalist-explorer Eric Mjoberg in 1925. Brilliantly tying together his own intrepid expeditions with fascinating quotes from famous historic predecessors to include: White Rajahs, District Officers, naturalist-scientists, military soldiers, writers, missionaries, and explorers, the author takes the reader on a rollercoaster ride of emotions while putting together a uniquely complete history of Sarawak, Borneo. This title is a finalist in the Travel Category of the 2009 National Indie Excellence Awards This book has just won the 2008 USBOOKNEWS.COM national award in the Travel-Cultural category. Book Soldier H The Headhunters of Borneo

Download or read book Soldier H The Headhunters of Borneo written by Shaun Clarke and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1963, the former British colony of Malaya was lobbying for the formation of a new political entity, the Federation of Malaysia, Singapore, Sabeh (North Borneo), Brunei and Sarawak. Viewing this as a threat to his dreams of expansion, President Sukarno of Indonesia began infiltrating insurgents into Borneo. In response, the British organised a force of Malay, British and Commonwealth troops to contain the rebels. What was most desperately needed, however, was a specialist group who could perform highly dangerous and arduous military tasks in the inhospitable, perilous terrain. The only men suitable for such operations were the legendary Special Air Service the SAS! Soldier H SAS: The Headhunters of Borneo is the story of one of the least-known, most extraordinary wars in British history. The SAS braved jungle and swamp infested with snakes, lizards, leeches, wild pigs and all kinds of poisonous insects to live with the primitive, headhunting natives in their longhouses by the rivers, winning their hearts and minds with medical aid and other assistance, then training them as paramilitaries who would eventually become known as the Border Scouts. While some of the SAS remained for months with the headhunters, other moved even deeper into the unexplored jungle 'the Gap' to establish ambush sites and helicopter landing zones. They also conducted daring 'Claret' raids across the border when, as the renowned 'Tiptoe Boys' who hit hard and vanished fast, they set booby traps and ambushed enemy troops moving along the many jungle tracks and rivers. They fought a bloody, nightmarish war and won it.

Book Natural Selection and Beyond

Download or read book Natural Selection and Beyond written by Charles Hyde Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Russel Wallace (1823 - 1913) was one of the late nineteenth century's most potent intellectual forces. His link to Darwin as co-discoverer of the principle of natural selection alone would have secured him a place in history, but he went on to complete work entitling him to recognition as the 'father' of modern biogeographical studies, as a pioneer in the field of astrobiology, and as an important contributor to subjects as far-ranging as glaciology, land reform, anthropology and ethnography, and epidemiology. Beyond this, many are coming to regard Wallace as the pre-eminent field biologist, collector, and naturalist of tropical regions. Add to that the fact that he was a vocal supporter of spiritualism, socialism, and the rights of the ordinary person, and it quickly becomes apparent that Wallace was a man of extraordinary breadth of attention. Yet his work in many of these areas is still not well known, and still less recognized is his relevance to current day research almost 100 years after his death. This rich collection of writings by more than twenty historians and scientists reviews and reflects on the work that made Wallace a famous man in his own time, and a figure of extraordinary influence and continuing interest today.

Download or read book Tewkesbury Walks written by Bernard Michaux and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-27 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is composed of eight chapters, each of which are organised as walks around the Tewkesbury (UK) countryside, which move from the specific to increasingly broader ideas. So, the MS starts with an individual’s relationship to their environment (Avon and Severn Valleys Loop) that leads to a description of conservation issues at local, national and international levels, and ultimately to a discussion of the importance of Citizen Science (Coombe Hill – Apperley –Deerhurst). The following chapter (Mythe Bridge – Forthampton – Tewkesbury) looks at science as it is actually practiced and its role in modern society by an analysis of the theory of Continental Drift and a biography of Alfred Wegener. This is a story that really deserves a much wider audience, as the idea was, in my opinion, as revolutionary as general relativity or quantum mechanics, and Wegener himself was such a heroic character. The following chapter (Tewkesbury Ham) also uses biography – this time of Alfred Russel Wallace - to investigate his ideas about how animal and plant distributions are inextricably linked to geological change. Wallace was every bit as heroic as Wegener, lived an even more adventurous life, and also deserves to be more widely known and appreciated. 2013 is the centenary of his death and he will be much in the news this year, so it would be timely to publish an account of his life and work suitable for the general public. The chapters on Wegener and Wallace set the scene for a detailed discussion of biogeography. This has been an active area of research for the past 30 years and I think it’s about time that somebody wrote about what has been an intellectually exciting and profoundly significant development in our view of ourselves and the world we live in.
