Excerpt: ...closely to see that there were no unlawful doings amongst us. This called for great wariness on our part, to avoid discovery: but ere long God summoned him from the wardenship of the prison, and from the prison of his.body at the same time. His successor was a younger man of a milder turn. What with coaxing, and what with bribes, I got him not to look into our doings too nicely, and not to come when he was not called for, except at certain fixed times, at which he always found me ready to receive him. I.used the liberty thus granted me for my neighbours' profit. I began to hear many confessions, and reconciled many persons to the Catholic Church. Some of these were heretics, but the greater number were only schismatics, as I could deal more freely with these than with the others. It was only after long acquaintance, and on the recommendation of trusty friends, that I would let any heretics know how little restraint was put upon me. I do not remember above eight or ten converts from heresy, of whom four entered religion. Two joined our Society, and the other two went to other Orders. As for schismatics, I brought back a goodly number of them to the bosom of the Church. Some became religious; and 6thers gave themselves to good works in England during the persecution. Of these last, was Mr. John Rigby, afterwards martyred. His martyrdoml was on this wise. On one occasion he appeared before the judges, to plead the cause of a Catholic lady. They, unwilling to grant any boon to a Catholic family, asked the advocate of what religion he was himself, that he pleaded so boldly in behalf of another; was he a priest? " No," he answered. " Are you a Papist? " " I am a Catholic." " Indeed; how long have...

Download or read book Gangland Robbers written by James Morton and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robbers have always seen themselves as the cream of the underworld, at the top of the criminal aristocracy, both in and out of prison. Gangland Robbers follows the stories of the men and women who go to great lengths to organise heists which, if all goes well, will keep them in luxury for many years, if not for life. If their plans fail, then often it is another sort of life. Bestselling Gangland authors Morton and Lobez cover the best stories of the past 200 years: from the tunnel-digging burglary of the Bank of Australia in 1828 through to the hold-ups of the bushrangers; Squizzy Taylor and his crew; the train robbers of the 1930s; Jockey Smith; ‘Mad Dog’ Cox; the ill-fated Victorian Bookie Robbery, as well as the less well-known ‘Angel of Death’, ‘The Pushbike Bandit’ and ‘The Gentleman Bandit’. Gangland Robbers explores the lives—their own and others—that these bandits ruined, those who went to the gallows, and the very few who redeemed themselves.

Book An Enquiry Into the Causes of the Late Increase of Robbers and Related Writings

Download or read book An Enquiry Into the Causes of the Late Increase of Robbers and Related Writings written by Henry Fielding and published by Wesleyan Edition of the Works. This book was released on 1988 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Enquiry into the Causes of the Late Increase of Robbers, and Related Writings provides critical unmodernized texts of Henry Fielding's legal and social pamphlets during the period 1749 to 1753, when Fielding served as magistrate for the City and Liberty of Westminster and County of Middlesex. The texts, for the first time, are fully annotated, and a lengthy introduction places them in their biographical and intellectual context, and provides a detailed account of their publication and reception. Five of the six pamphlets included in this volume clearly serve the interests of the Pelham Administration. There is, however, no evidence to show that Fielding wrote any of the pamphlets at the invitation or command of figures of power within the Pelham Administration; instead he appears simply to have seized those opportunities appropriate to his office to further government interests or, as with An Enquiry into the Causes of the Late Increase of Robbers (1751) and A Proposal for Making an Effectual Provision for the Poor (1753), offered his own solutions to problems which Parliament was currently debating.

Book The Regulations of Robbers

Download or read book The Regulations of Robbers written by Christina Accomando and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Regulations of Robbers, Christina Accomando examines legal, political, and literary discourses of slavery and resistance through the works of judges, lawmakers, and former slaves. She builds on the words of Harriet Jacobs - I regarded such laws as the regulations of robbers, who had no rights that I was bound to respect - and advocates a methodology of multiple perspectives, exposing the false neutrality of legal discourse and turning attention to stories that have been suppressed. Accomando analyzes Sojourner Truth (who initiated lawsuits and petitioned Congress) and Harriet Jacobs (who shaped her autobiography into legal critique) as legal actors who challenged nineteenth-century legal constructions of African Americans. She argues that laws governing slave behavior, racial identity, miscegenation, rape, reproduction, literacy, and property defined. African Americans as nonhumans, with dangerous sexuality and nonexistent subjectivity. She traces how nineteenth-century constructions of race and gender continue to inform modern policy discussions. Accomando's analysis of slavery and resistance reveals the entrenched racism in U.S. law and also points to concrete opportun
