Book With One Hand Tied Behind His Back

Download or read book With One Hand Tied Behind His Back written by Dick Ramsey and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When you ́re eighteen you don ́t get tired, you don ́t get cold, nothing terrible will ever happen, and you can do anything with one hand tied behind your back. Say hello to Gail Stuart, the protagonist of With One Hand Tied Behind His Back: The Life and Times of Gail Stuart. He ́s an eighteen year old college freshman falsely accused of stealing a midterm Geology test. Presuming they ́re nabbed, test thieves get an F for the test, possible expulsion, and, if the police are involved, arrest for a high misdemeanor. But what if new information makes the case a felony, which it does, despite the fact that the word evidence seems to have disappeared from the language. Gail is then joined by bribable and buyable administrators, dodging and ducking department heads, a cowardly martinet from the board of regents, and a babble of noble, corrupt, and partly corrupt students, fraternity blokes, instructors, proprietary secretaries, anxious editors, sleazy reporter, attorneys, cops, and local citizens, all either hoping Gail is innocent or that he takes the rap. How he overcomes his dilemma is further convoluted by other avocations and unplanned adventures, a full course schedule, a sorority hasher ́s job, a fraternity membership, a couple of physical altercations, and even his own retail business. With One Hand Tied Behind His Back also presents the Stuart family. Roderick Bruce Stuart II, Gail ́s father is a descendant of Charles II of England. His family has lived in Minneapolis since the 1860s. Gail ́s mother, Charlotte Fairfax Stuart, comes from renegade Swiss mercenaries, degenerate French apaches, and more civilized Virginia farmers. Find out what she does with her life and how it influences her son. Finally, With One Hand Tied Behind His Back presents the Midwest college scene of 1954 where the expanding economy of post World War II and the GI Bill have increased the number of students, including women. One of them, the self assured and competent Rebecca Brickerhaus, will share and adventure or two and fall in love with Gail Stuart. Ah, yes. How could it be otherwise.

Book With One Hand Tied behind My Brain

Download or read book With One Hand Tied behind My Brain written by Avrel Seale and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most would not expect a book about a stroke to be entertaining, but this memoir will force you to laugh through a tragedy, then cry, then laugh again. Avrel Seale was fifty, did not smoke or drink, had low blood pressure, and had hiked more than two hundred miles the year a stroke nearly ended his life. In an instant, he was teleported into the body of an old man—unbalanced, shaky, spastic, and half-paralyzed. Overnight, he was plunged into a world of brain surgeons, nurses, insurance case managers, and an abundance of therapists. Beginning three weeks before his stroke to set the stage, Seale leads us through the harrowing day of his stroke and emergency brain surgery with minute-by-minute intensity. We then follow him through ICU, a rehab hospital, and a neuro-recovery group-living center, where we meet a memorable cast of other stroke survivors and also those recovering from auto accidents and gunshots. Finally home, Seale leads us through a new life of firsts, including returning to work, to driving, to playing guitar, to camping, and even to writing a book—all with one hand. What emerges from his humor (“elegant but devastating”) is a revealing critique of the hospital experience, the insurance industry, and rehab culture. And his nothing-off-the-table quest for recovery shows both the sobering struggles and inspiring possibilities of life after a stroke in twenty-first century America.

Book Formulaic Sequences

Download or read book Formulaic Sequences written by Norbert Schmitt and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formulaic sequences (FS) are now recognized as an essential element of language use. However, research on FS has generally been limited to a focus on description, or on the place of FS in L1 acquisition. This volume opens new directions in FS research, concentrating on how FS are acquired and processed by the mind, both in the L1 and L2. The ten original studies in the volume illustrate the L2 acquisition of FS, the relationship between L1 and L2 FS, the relationship between corpus recurrence of FS and their psycholinguistic reality, the processes involved in reading FS, and pedagogical issues in teaching FS. The studies use a wide range of methodologies, many of them innovative, and thus the volume serves as a model for future research in the area. The volume begins with three survey chapters offering a background on the characteristics and measurement of FS.

Book Communication in Drama a Pragmatic Approach

Download or read book Communication in Drama a Pragmatic Approach written by Dr. Umesh S. Jagadale and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COMMUNICATION IN DRAMA: A PRAGMATIC APPROACH is a book based on the authors research work in theatrical communication. Theatre has its own language. The verbal and non-verbal communication operating in the theatrical context is a central concern of this book. The book offers an authentic view to explore numerous intricacies of communication in drama using Pragmatics as a perspective. Pragmatics is a branch of linguistics. It basically studies the use of language in various contexts pertaining to real-life communication. However, the communication in drama differs from the communication in real life. Drama is scripted and performed in the multivalent contexts of real life and theater at the same time. At the backdrop of such contextual dynamics, the existing analytical models of communication in Pragmatics are observed to have their own shortcomings, since they are basically evolved to analyze the communication in real life and not in drama. Hence, peculiarly to assess the speech situations in drama, the author has evolved a new pragmatic-analytical model in this book. The new model is authenticated by using it to analyse five milestone Indian plays in English. Precisely, the book is a pragmatic analysis of communication in drama.

Book Efforts at Truth

Download or read book Efforts at Truth written by Nicholas Mosley and published by Dalkey Archive Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas Mosley brings the unblinking probing of a scientist to bear on the workings of the writer's imagination. The result is a constantly stimulating, frequently startling, and always cheerfully unorthodox autobiography. As a novelist, biographer, editor, and screenwriter, Nicholas Mosley has always been concerned with the central paradox of writing: if by definition fiction is untrue, and biography never complete, is there a form that will enable a writer to get at the truth of a life? In Efforts at Truth Mosley scrutinizes his own life and work, but examines them as a curious observer, fascinated by the constant interaction of reality and the written word. As a life, it has been colorful, in settings ranging from the West Indies to a remote Welsh hill farm, from war action in Italy to battles with Hollywood moguls, from the Colony Room to the House of Lords. In print, the range has been as wide: editor of a controversial religious magazine, author of the acclaimed novel series Catastrophe Practice, screenwriter of his own work with Joe Losey and John Frankenheimer, biographer of his notorious father Oswald Mosley, and, in 1990, winner of the Whitbread Award for his novel Hopeful Monsters. Efforts at Truth, Mosley's distinctive autobiography, brings together the singular life and intricate mind of an important, multifaceted writer.

Book Hank E O Panky s Little Black and Blue Book

Download or read book Hank E O Panky s Little Black and Blue Book written by Hank E. O'Panky and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-08-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This hilarious spoof of the former bestseller Harvey Penick’s Little Red Book not only satirizes his book but also hysterically lampoons a variety of contemporary topics, such as the legal system, the battles between the sexes, violence, the obsession with winning, and other human foibles. In O’Panky’s own words: "Maybe a few short years ago...[Penick’s] laid-back, namby-pamby, Liberace-like methods may have worked to some extent, but to succeed in a sport today, you need to be aggressive and physical, obnoxious and noisy, pesty and loutish." This timely book covers all the basic elements of golf, such as the mechanics of an effective swing, the mental aspects of the game, and "the importance of gastrointestinal noises during close matches." It will appeal to a wide range of readers: men, women, teens, and even aliens, such as Canadians and Martians. SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: Unlike those mildly and so-called humorous golf books you generally find on the bookshelf, this one may result in laugh-specific injuries.
