Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Cortes the Conqueror The conquest of Mexico in the sixteenth century is one of the greatest true fairytales of the world. A handful of men, lured by rumors they had heard of a land where gold was as plentiful as rocks in their Spain, set forth to discover and conquer it, with small conception of the greatness of their undertaking. They found a country abounding in marvels, riches and dangers. By means of audacity, courage and gunpowder they made themselves masters of its monarch and of its people, gave a new realm to the King of Spain, a wider sheepfold to Christendom, and started the vast flood of western gold that for generations continued to pour into Europe's hungry coffers. In all American history there is no story so colorful as the story of the Conquistadores and the contest between their valor and the desperate defence of the Aztecs. There is no need to turn to European annals in search of romance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hernando Cortes: Conqueror of Mexico At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the youth of Spain had become inspired with the hope, if not the belief, that wealth and honors awaited them in the West Indies, and what more natural than that many of them should wish to try their fortunes there? Among those who looked towards the Occident for the betterment of their birthrights was the boy who, as a man, became the conqueror of Mexico, Hernando Cortes. He was born to poverty, but could boast descent from most distinguished ancestry, as the son of a retired captain of the Spanish army, Don Martin Cortes de Monroy, and his worthy wife, Dona Catalina Pizarro Altamirano. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of Hernando Cortes, the Discoverer of Mexico, and Francisco Pizarro, the Conqueror of Peru Is this true, is a question often asked by a child, after reading a story. Perhaps it is well, sometimes, to be able to answer this question in-the affirmative. If it is possible to relate the history of remarkable persons in such a manner as to interest the young, such stories may create a better taste in reading than that which is formed by the constant perusal of fic tion, which is now employed not only in works intended for relaxation and amusement, but as a vehicle to inculcate the deepest principles of philosophy and religion. This volume is in tended as a part of a series of the lives of distinguished persons, adapted to the under standing of the young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fernando Cortes: And the Conquest of Mexico, 1485-1547 Pain held the dominant place amongst European states in the first half of the sixteenth century, and she was prolific in great men, who governed at home or extended her power abroad. Among the latter, Fernando Cortes was easily the greatest, and the story of his life is a chronicle of deeds of heroism and sheer daring, to which history offers few parallels. In the work of overturning the mili tary and religious despotism of Montezuma, some terrible deeds were done. Similar acts of severity and cruelty, however, blot the fame of great leaders in most wars, ancient and modern. Some of the material used in the following brief story of the conqueror's life has already appeared in the biographical note to the Letters of Cortes, the favourable reception of which by students of American history, has encouraged me to prepare the present work in a more popular form. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Hernan Cortes When I resolved to write the following history, I was sensible that prejudice might offer two objections against the undertaking. The circumstance of my being a Spaniard, rendered me liable to be considered partial towards the conquerors of Mexico, and my character as a Novelist, would naturally suggest the probability of my roving too freely over the field of imagination. Against these two objections, it has been my zealous endeavour to provide. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!
