Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Active Service: Ideals of Canada's Fighting Men Great Britain was reluctantly compelled to declare war on Germany in order to keep her treaty obligations with Belgium, and also to maintain her national freedom. Germany was inspired by ambitions which menaced our liberties. They imagined that they were the "Supermen" and that their mission in life was to dominate the world and propagate their "Kultur." Great Britain, realising the stupendous struggle before her, called for volunteers, and the loyal sons of the Empire nobly responded to the call of duty, and nowhere more fully than in Canada. The flower and chivalry of Canadian manhood rushed to arms to fight for freedom, and for those great principles for which our fathers were willing to die. Canada may well be proud of her gallant sons. They are brave in battle, patient when wounded, and chivalrous to a fallen foe. They have certainly "made good" in France and Flanders and have won undying fame at St. Julien. St. Julien - write that word In the blood of the noble dead! Of the men who came at duty's call, And bravely fought and bled. They were loyal young Canadians, Yes, a brave heroic band; Who died for King and country, And the honour of the land. Book excerpt: Between 15,000 and 20,000 underage youths, some as young as ten, signed up to fight in Canada's armed forces in the First World War. They served in the trenches alongside their elders, and fought in all the major battles: Ypres, the Somme, Passchendaele, Vimy Ridge, and the rest. Many were injured or suffered psychological wounds. Many died. This is the first book to tell their story. Some boys joined up to escape unhappy homes and workplaces. Others went with their parents' blessing, carrying letters from fathers and mothers asking the recruiters to take their eager sons. The romantic notion of a short, victorious campaign was wiped out the second these boys arrived on the Western Front. The authors, who narrate the fighting with both military professionalism and humanity, portray many boys who, in the heat of battle, made a seamless transition from follower to leader to hero. Authors Dan Black and John Boileau combed the archives and collections to bring these stories to life. Passages from letters the boy soldiers wrote home reveal the range of emotions and experiences they underwent, from the humorous to the unspeakably horrible. Their parents' letters touch us with their concern, love, uncertainty, and often, grief. Meticulously researched and abundantly illustrated with photographs, paintings, and a collection of specially commissioned maps, Old Enough to Fight is Canadian military and social history at its most fascinating.

Book Toronto s Fighting 75th in the Great War 1915 1919

Download or read book Toronto s Fighting 75th in the Great War 1915 1919 written by Timothy J. Stewart and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by His Royal Highness Charles, Prince of Wales Hospital ships filled the harbour of Le Havre as the 75th Mississauga Battalion arrived on 13 August 1916. Those soldiers who survived would spend almost three years in a tiny corner of northeastern France and northwestern Belgium (Flanders), where many of their comrades still lie. And they would serve in many of the most horrific battles of that long, bloody conflict—Saint Eloi, the Somme, Arras, Vimy, Hill 70, Lens, Passchendaele, Amiens, Drocourt-Quéant, Canal du Nord, Cambrai, and Valenciennes. This book tells the story of the 75th Battalion (later the Toronto Scottish Regiment) and the five thousand men who formed it—most from Toronto—from all walks of life. They included professionals, university graduates, white- and blue-collar workers, labourers, and the unemployed, some illiterate. They left a comfortable existence in the prosperous, strongly pro-British provincial capital for life in the trenches of France and Flanders. Tommy Church, mayor of Toronto from 1915 to 1921, sought to include his city’s name in the unit’s name because of the many city officials and local residents who served in it. Three years later Church accepted the 75th’s now heavily emblazoned colours for safekeeping at City Hall from Lieutenant-Colonel Colin Harbottle, who returned with his bloodied but successful survivors. The author pulls no punches in recounting their labours, triumphs, and travails. Timothy J. Stewart undertook exhaustive research for this first-ever history of the 75th, drawing from archival sources (focusing on critical decisions by Brigadier Victor Oldum, General Officer Commanding 11th Brigade), diaries, letters, newspaper accounts, and interviews.

Book I Am Canada A Call to Battle

Download or read book I Am Canada A Call to Battle written by Gillian Chan and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War of 1812 comes to life through the eyes of a young Canadian boy. It's 1812. War has begun, and thirteen-year-old Alexander (Sandy) MacKay is jealous when his older brother Angus goes off with their father to fight the Americans attacking the Niagara region. Too young to know the darker side of battle, he resents being left to shoulder the work on his family's farm. Itching to get in on the action, he sneaks away from home and heads to Lundy's Lane to join up with the local militia. But battle is imminent, and now there's not much his father can do except try to shield him from the worst of the fighting. Sandy's idealized notions of what battle will be like are shattered when the man standing before him is killed by a musket ball and Sandy's own brother is severely wounded. At the battle of Lundy's Lane, the united Canadian/British forces turn the tide against the American troops, but Sandy comes to know how chilling war can be. Just in time for the bicentennial of the War of 1812, A Call to Battle is a sobering look at the realities of war. Author Gillian Chan skillfully depicts the transformation of an impetuous young boy, full of boyish enthusiasm, into a more realistic young man who emerges on the other side of war.
