Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Badges, Bullets and Bars is brutally honest, raw, and gritty autobiographical book. It depicts the good, the bad and the awful experiences and encompasses the continuous struggle between good and evil, righteousness and injustices, suffered throughout the author's career as a former Baltimore City Police Officer. This courageous and compelling book charts the course of the author, who descends into a deep abyss from his beginning positions as a recruit, rookie, and generally innocent police cadet and later as a journeyman officer. His early life's yearning was to become a law enforcement officer and motor patrolman which he achieved. However, his shining pride, loyalty and respect for the badge began to erode over time. He was driven to alcoholism. The author ultimately disgraced the badge and became a racist, callused, hardened, jaded officer, and at times, totally uncaring, dysfunctional, troubled and possibly, mentally unstable police officer and human being all fostered by the criminal element that he had to endure during his 14-year tenure on the police force in the highest crime ridden district in Baltimore City - the Eastern District. This District was notorious for its violence, murders, rapes, drugs, filth and disregard for human life. How the good and especially the bad, horrible and jaw dropping unfathomable experiences a police officer encounters in a City overrun with violence and death, is graphically depicted in the former TV series "Homicide: Life on the Street" and "The Wire." The book also follows the author through his two criminal indictments and subsequent incarcerations, both in Federal and local correctional institutions. It allows the reader to enter a world of prison uncertainty and at times, fear and anxiety for his own life, as a former policeman. The contents of this book display how being a police officer in such an area can and will, completely change an officer's demeanor, racist thoughts, actions, and life's questions. And, at times, bring forth tears as one reflects at the inner core of all the good we learned, were raised to expect and to respect, and that which we encounter thru life's journey. This book is MUST READ for anyone, who might want to examine and understand the trials, tribulations, pressures and stress put upon a police officer working in one of the highest crime areas of our country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bullets, Badges, and Bullshit is a thirty-year police-career compilation involving all three titular subjects, taking place from 1960 into the 1990s. The many stories depicted include a large variety of police actions from humorous to tragic and all that falls in between. These stories depict the turbulent years of the Viet Nam War era and my involvement as a member of the Special Enforcement Detail (SED) riot squad. We were called out frequently, and to such places as Disneyland, the Anaheim Convention Center, the Laguna Rock Festival, Cal State University, Fullerton, Hillcrest Park, and other locations. Also included are accounts of my participation in the California State Police Olympics, administrative blunders, high-speed pursuits, homicides, robberies, burglaries, rapes, practical jokes, and just plain unbelievable screw-ups. Each incident is different from the others, and nothing is predictable. This book is an eye opener to a side of police work that the general public seldom comes in contact with and often has no concept of.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2021 New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards (History, Other)** Lawman or Outlaw? At times, the black-hatted “villains” and white-hatted “good guys” of the Old West were one and the same. Often it was difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish who was who. Sheriff Wyatt Earp stole horses and ran brothels. Albuquerque’s first town marshal, Milton Yarberry, was accused of murder and subsequently “jerked to Jesus.” Burt Alvord, town marshal of Willcox, Arizona, and friends, robbed a train. Alvord then deputized these same friends into a posse to apprehend the robbers. It came as no surprise when his posse came up empty handed. Justice Hoodoo Brown and Deputy JJ Webb ruled Las Vegas as leaders of the Dodge City Gang until they were run out of town by citizens fed up with their type of justice. “Mysterious” Dave Mather and even two of the Dalton Gang spent time behind a badge, as well as behind bars. When Outlaws Wore Badges explores the double lives of outlaw lawmen through some of the West’s most memorable frontier characters.

  • Author : Laurence J. Yadon

Download or read book Outlaws with Badges written by Laurence J. Yadon and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-01-29 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Old West, upright lawmen were scarce. Often, the men who were bound to keep the peace were just as corrupt as the men they pursued. These dishonest deputies chose their professions based on convenience rather than conviction, and the most revered were often the wiliest. These men held grudges, ruled with violence, and instilled fear in all who crossed their paths. Offered here is an untainted perspective of these outlaws that discerns fact from myth. Legends such as Wyatt Earp and renegade lawman Dirty Dave Rudabaugh are presented as real men with quirks and weaknesses. The authors deconstruct not only the Dalton's last stand in Coffeyville, Kansas, and the gunfight at the OK Corral-among other famous heists-but also the triumphs and flaws of their organizers. The Old West's former outlaws turned good, former lawmen gone bad, and honorable citizens who moonlighted as robbers and rustlers are presented in these pages. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Laurence J. Yadon is an attorney, mediator, and arbitrator who presents on various legal subjects, Oklahoma history, and crime history. Book The Badge and the Bullet

Download or read book The Badge and the Bullet written by Peter Scharf and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1983 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses reforms that must be instituted to control police use of deadly force, and to establish an equitable balance of risk to protect police officers (from being hurt by armed citizens) and citizens (from being erroneously shot by police). It begins with an examination of the effects of social forces on the police, psychological characteristics of individual officers, and the problems of management and control on decision-making by individual officers, all illustrated by examples of deadly-force encounters from investigations in Newark, Miami, Birmingham and Oakland. There is a discussion of the various purposes guns serve in police activities, the cultural marriage of guns with policing, and the variety of armed confrontations faced by police officers. The traditional view that police officers' behavior can be adequately understood in terms of the final armed encounter is discredited. A comparison involving the personality profiles of some officers who have shot often and some who have rarely fired explores the role of human emotions and moral judgment in these confrontations. The text also analyzes the impact of police administrative policies upon decisions to shoot or not shoot. A final chapter examines how police departments might control unnecessary use of deadly force. (NCJRS, modified).

Book Shoutin in the Fire

Download or read book Shoutin in the Fire written by Danté Stewart and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stirring meditation of being Black and learning to love in a loveless, anti-Black world “Only once in a lifetime do we come across a writer like Danté Stewart, so young and yet so masterful with the pen. This work is a thing to make dungeons shake and hearts thunder.”—Robert Jones, Jr., New York Times bestselling author of The Prophets In Shoutin’ in the Fire, Danté Stewart gives breathtaking language to his reckoning with the legacy of white supremacy—both the kind that hangs over our country and the kind that is internalized on a molecular level. Stewart uses his personal experiences as a vehicle to reclaim and reimagine spiritual virtues like rage, resilience, and remembrance—and explores how these virtues might function as a work of love against an unjust, unloving world. In 2016, Stewart was a rising leader at the predominantly white evangelical church he and his family were attending in Augusta, Georgia. Like many young church leaders, Stewart was thrilled at the prospect of growing his voice and influence within the community, and he was excited to break barriers as the church’s first Black preacher. But when Donald Trump began his campaign, so began the unearthing. Stewart started overhearing talk in the pews—comments ranging from microaggressions to outright hostility toward Black Americans. As this violence began to reveal itself en masse, Stewart quickly found himself isolated amid a people unraveled; this community of faith became the place where he and his family now found themselves most alone. This set Stewart on a journey—first out of the white church and then into a liberating pursuit of faith—by looking to the wisdom of the saints that have come before, including James H. Cone, James Baldwin, and Toni Morrison, and by heeding the paradoxical humility of Jesus himself. This sharply observed journey is an intimate meditation on coming of age in a time of terror. Stewart reveals the profound faith he discovered even after experiencing the violence of the American church: a faith that loves Blackness; speaks truth to pain and trauma; and pursues a truer, realer kind of love than the kind we’re taught, a love that sets us free.

Book Mud Blood and Bullets

Download or read book Mud Blood and Bullets written by Edward Rowbotham and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-12-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1915 and the Great War has been raging for a year when Edward Rowbotham, a coal miner from the Midlands, volunteers for Kitchener’s Army. Drafted into the newly formed Machine Gun Corps, he is sent to fight in places whose names will forever be associated with mud and blood and sacrifice: Ypres, the Somme and Passchendaele. He is one of the ‘lucky’ ones, winning the Military Medal for bravery and surviving more than two-and-a-half years of the terrible slaughter, which wiped out all but six of his original company. He wrote these memoirs fifty years later, but found his memories of life in the trenches had not diminished at all. The sights and sounds of battle, the excitement, the terror, the extraordinary comradeship, are all vividly described as if they had happened to him only yesterday.
