Book excerpt: "Witchy Wizardly Woods" Growing up with eight sisters and one brother in a small village in Mexico was a little hectic some times. We were allowed to play 'only' when we finished our chores. We didn't have a chicken coop, and I was in charge of finding the eggs in the most unusual places. I also had to help my sisters remove the kernels from the cob to grind it and make corn tortillas. My mom asked me to pick some fruit from the forest and I obeyed. I was walking as fast as I could when all of a sudden I saw big walls forming ahead of me.When I reached the walls I saw an old man standing by a double wood door; he opened it and I was able to have a peek at some incredible inhabitants.I am a 14th year old girl named 'Isabel'. I was captured by magic creatures. Solving riddles and finding 'Loli' the star girl may give me the chance that I need to escape. Otherwise, the other human children, and I will remain prisoners forever! "Sea Enchanter" Sitting on my favorite conch shell waiting for my friends 'Galene' the Nereid of calm seas', and 'Doris' the Nereid of seas bounty to arrive; I admired a flock of white birds flying around me while I waited. I live in a beautiful kingdom above the sea water called 'Empyrean'. Empyreans live in identical four level castles in the middle of what 'Landers' call the 'Bermuda triangle'. Our homes were erected on top of 300 foot-high rocks with God Poseidon's permission. I am a 'Sea Enchanter' named 'Siela'. The 'tale' that I am about to reveal contains all past events that led me to where I am right now. My tale includes revenge, friendship, deception, defiance, and love. "A Medieval Fantasy Adventure" he view from this tall tree is kind of pretty. I can see salmon jumping on the river. Colorful birds are making their nests while they sing. The sky is clear this morning after a night of heavy rain. My name is Emma and I am a 16 year old orphan with long brown hair that I braid every other day. My eyes are hazel like my moms. My blue maiden dress is the only one I own. I am in charge of four siblings. Our parents died trying to protect us from a dragon attack and were killed instantly by the monsters lethal fire. I was not successful at hunting last night because I could not see anything with the rain. My bow and arrows seemed to be drying faster than I was. I decided to go check a village and hopefully someone was going to feel sorry for me and feed me. While entering the village a group of people was gathering around a sign that was being posted by a royal knight. His expensive uniform gave him away. "Young princess Victoria has been abducted by Amira the dark magic sorcerer. The King is offering one hundred gold coins to anyone who rescues her." The reward was more than enough to feed my siblings for a long time. Will Princess Victoria's handsome teen brother 'Prince Edward' interfere? Or are the two of us destined to fall in love during the rescue? "Soul Thieves"My best friend was killed in a motorcycle accident. He was 18 years old like me when he died. I was invited to a lagoon and I decided to summon Jesse's spirit while I was in the water. I didn't know how to swim and I almost drown while calling for Jesse. The moment I reached shore a strong realization came to my head. The only way that I could see Jesse again is by being dead like him! People tend to summon a loved one when they die. Sometimes the right soul or spirit hears the summoning; but sometimes the ones listening are the 'Soul Thieves'. A Sentinel is in charge of guarding human souls from the Soul Thieves who sells them to a diabolic goblin named Azura. She eats the souls to stay young and powerful. My name is Leila and I was named an 'Earth Sentinel' by my dead twin sister Lia. My mission is to battle Soul Thieves and destroy Azura with the help of an attractive 19 year old Earth Sentinel named Max and his sister April. The three of us were given a special power to help us be victorious!

When I finally opened my eyes, I found myself in a strange dark cave. When I was about to get up, I heard an unfamiliar voice. "Who are you? Your blood tasted different than a human's, and it's making me dizzy." The stranger was an attractive vampire named 'Kendrick' who thought I was a human girl. The mixing of our blood created a new race of Angel Vampires!

Book excerpt: Official U.S. edition with full color illustrations throughout. NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Yuval Noah Harari, author of the critically-acclaimed New York Times bestseller and international phenomenon Sapiens, returns with an equally original, compelling, and provocative book, turning his focus toward humanity’s future, and our quest to upgrade humans into gods. Over the past century humankind has managed to do the impossible and rein in famine, plague, and war. This may seem hard to accept, but, as Harari explains in his trademark style—thorough, yet riveting—famine, plague and war have been transformed from incomprehensible and uncontrollable forces of nature into manageable challenges. For the first time ever, more people die from eating too much than from eating too little; more people die from old age than from infectious diseases; and more people commit suicide than are killed by soldiers, terrorists and criminals put together. The average American is a thousand times more likely to die from binging at McDonalds than from being blown up by Al Qaeda. What then will replace famine, plague, and war at the top of the human agenda? As the self-made gods of planet earth, what destinies will we set ourselves, and which quests will we undertake? Homo Deus explores the projects, dreams and nightmares that will shape the twenty-first century—from overcoming death to creating artificial life. It asks the fundamental questions: Where do we go from here? And how will we protect this fragile world from our own destructive powers? This is the next stage of evolution. This is Homo Deus. With the same insight and clarity that made Sapiens an international hit and a New York Times bestseller, Harari maps out our future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is the first to assemble the evidence for the existence of sorcerors in the ancient world; it also addresses the question of their identity and social origins. This fascinating reconstruction of the careers of witches and sorcerors allows us to see into previously inaccessible areas of Greco-Roman life. Compelling for both its detail and clarity, and with an extraordinarily revealing breadth of evidence employed, it will be an essential resource for anyone studying ancient magic.

Download or read book The Dictator s Seduction written by Lauren H. Derby and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-17 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the Dominican Republic from 1930 until his assassination in 1961, was one of the longest and bloodiest in Latin American history. The Dictator’s Seduction is a cultural history of the Trujillo regime as it was experienced in the capital city of Santo Domingo. Focusing on everyday forms of state domination, Lauren Derby describes how the regime infiltrated civil society by fashioning a “vernacular politics” based on popular idioms of masculinity and fantasies of race and class mobility. Derby argues that the most pernicious aspect of the dictatorship was how it appropriated quotidian practices such as gossip and gift exchange, leaving almost no place for Dominicans to hide or resist. Drawing on previously untapped documents in the Trujillo National Archives and interviews with Dominicans who recall life under the dictator, Derby emphasizes the role that public ritual played in Trujillo’s exercise of power. His regime included the people in affairs of state on a massive scale as never before. Derby pays particular attention to how events and projects were received by the public as she analyzes parades and rallies, the rebuilding of Santo Domingo following a major hurricane, and the staging of a year-long celebration marking the twenty-fifth year of Trujillo’s regime. She looks at representations of Trujillo, exploring how claims that he embodied the popular barrio antihero the tíguere (tiger) stoked a fantasy of upward mobility and how a rumor that he had a personal guardian angel suggested he was uniquely protected from his enemies. The Dictator’s Seduction sheds new light on the cultural contrivances of autocratic power.

Book Ents Elves and Eriador

Download or read book Ents Elves and Eriador written by Matthew T. Dickerson and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-11-17 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many readers drawn into the heroic tales of J. R. R. Tolkien's imaginary world of Middle-earth have given little conscious thought to the importance of the land itself in his stories or to the vital roles played by the flora and fauna of that land. As a result, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion are rarely considered to be works of environmental literature or mentioned together with such authors as John Muir, Rachel Carson, or Aldo Leopold. Tolkien's works do not express an activist agenda; instead, his environmentalism is expressed in the form of literary fiction. Nonetheless, Tolkien's vision of nature is as passionate and has had as profound an influence on his readers as that of many contemporary environmental writers. The burgeoning field of agrarianism provides new insights into Tolkien's view of the natural world and environmental responsibility. In Ents, Elves, and Eriador, Matthew Dickerson and Jonathan Evans show how Tolkien anticipated some of the tenets of modern environmentalism in the imagined world of Middle-earth and the races with which it is peopled. The philosophical foundations that define Tolkien's environmentalism, as well as the practical outworking of these philosophies, are found throughout his work. Agrarianism is evident in the pastoral lifestyle and sustainable agriculture of the Hobbits, as they harmoniously cultivate the land for food and goods. The Elves practice aesthetic, sustainable horticulture as they shape their forest environs into an elaborate garden. To complete Tolkien's vision, the Ents of Fangorn Forest represent what Dickerson and Evans label feraculture, which seeks to preserve wilderness in its natural form. Unlike the Entwives, who are described as cultivating food in tame gardens, the Ents risk eventual extinction for their beliefs. These ecological philosophies reflect an aspect of Christian stewardship rooted in Tolkien's Catholic faith. Dickerson and Evans define it as "stewardship of the kind modeled by Gandalf," a stewardship that nurtures the land rather than exploiting its life-sustaining capacities to the point of exhaustion. Gandalfian stewardship is at odds with the forces of greed exemplified by Sauron and Saruman, who, with their lust for power, ruin the land they inhabit, serving as a dire warning of what comes to pass when stewardly care is corrupted or ignored. Dickerson and Evans examine Tolkien's major works as well as his lesser-known stories and essays, comparing his writing to that of the most important naturalists of the past century. A vital contribution to environmental literature and an essential addition to Tolkien scholarship, Ents, Elves, and Eriador offers both Tolkien fans and environmentalists an understanding of Middle-earth that has profound implications for environmental stewardship in the present and the future of our own world.

Book The Modern Satiric Grotesque and Its Traditions

Download or read book The Modern Satiric Grotesque and Its Traditions written by John R. Clark and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Mann predicted that no manner or mode in literature would be so typical or so pervasive in the twentieth century as the grotesque. Assuredly he was correct. The subjects and methods of our comic literature (and much of our other literature) are regularly disturbing and often repulsive—no laughing matter. In this ambitious study, John R. Clark seeks to elucidate the major tactics and topics deployed in modern literary dark humor. In Part I he explores the satiric strategies of authors of the grotesque, strategies that undercut conventional usage and form: the de-basement of heroes, the denigration of language and style, the disruption of normative narrative technique, and even the debunking of authors themselves. Part II surveys major recurrent themes of grotesquerie: tedium, scatology, cannibalism, dystopia, and Armageddon or the end of the world. Clearly the literature of the grotesque is obtrusive and ugly, its effect morbid and disquieting—and deliberately meant to be so. Grotesque literature may be unpleasant, but it is patently insightful. Indeed, as Clark shows, all of the strategies and topics employed by this literature stem from age-old and spirited traditions. Critics have complained about this grim satiric literature, asserting that it is dank, cheerless, unsavory, and negative. But such an interpretation is far too simplistic. On the contrary, as Clark demonstrates, such grotesque writing, in its power and its prevalence in the past and present, is in fact conventional, controlled, imaginative, and vigorous—no mean achievements for any body of art.
