Book excerpt: In January, 1987, at age 48, I was stricken with ulcerative colitis. I was gravely ill and on the brink of a major organ failure. All my intestines were severely inflamed because of a medication I had taken in order to treat ankylosing spondylitis. (A form of arthritis of the spine). I spent twelve days in a hospital due to my illness, and a couple nights after my release from the hospital I was in our spare bedroom praying that God would touch and heal me. And during that time of prayer I had an encounter with the Lord God, and that encounter was unlike anything I had ever experienced. I did not see God, nor did I hear His voice, but I felt the Lord's power and presence over-shadowing me in a way in which I go wanting for words in order to fully explain that experience. My encounter with God was similar to that of Job only in that God opened my mind and revealed unto me who I was, and who God the Father really is. The Holy Spirit revealed unto me the enormous sin of pride, and a need for me to repent and change my sinful attitude. Thank You, Lord, for Your eternal mercy! Soon after my spiritual awakening, I began to have thoughts come into my mind in a way that I had not ever experienced. The thoughts were Biblical truths and principles that were often formulated in rhyme, and they were occurring randomly day and night. But soon I realized I was forgetting the rhymes, sometimes within minutes of their occurrence, then I realized there was a necessity to quickly write my thought down; sometimes I would write them on a small piece of scratch paper. For the most part, but with a few exceptions, each page of this book contains rhymes and axioms in the order they initially came into my mind.

Book Hajj to the Heart

  • Author : Scott Kugle
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2021-12-28
  • ISBN : 1469665328

Download or read book Hajj to the Heart written by Scott Kugle and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against the sweeping backdrop of South Asian history, this is a story of journeys taken by sixteenth-century reformist Muslim scholars and Sufi mystics from India to Arabia. At the center is the influential Sufi scholar Shaykh Ali Muttaqi and his little-known network of disciples. Scott Kugle relates how Ali Muttaqi, an expert in Arabic, scriptural hermeneutics, and hadith, left his native South Asia and traversed treacherous seas to make the Hajj to Mecca. Settling in Mecca, he continued to influence his homeland from overseas. Kugle draws on his original translations of Arabic and Persian manuscripts, never before available in English, to trace Ali Muttaqi's devotional writings, revealing how the Hajj transformed his spiritual life and political loyalties. The story expands across three generations of peripatetic Sufi masters in the Mutaqqi lineage as they travel for purposes of pilgrimage, scholarship, and sometimes simply for survival along Indian Ocean maritime routes linking global Muslim communities. Exploring the political intrigue, scholarly debates, and diverse social milieus that shaped the colorful personalities of his Sufi subjects, Kugle argues for the importance of Indian Sufi thought in the study of hadith and of ethics in Islam.
