Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of a Text offers a vivid portrait of one community's interaction with its favorite text—the epic Ramcaritmanas—and the way in which performances of the epic function as a flexible and evolving medium for cultural expression. Anthropologists, historians of religion, and readers interested in the culture of North India and the performance arts will find breadth of subject, careful scholarship, and engaging presentation in this unique and beautifully illustrated examination of Hindi culture. The most popular and influential text of Hindi-speaking North India, the epic Ramcaritmanas is a sixteenth century retelling of the Ramayana story by the poet Tulsidas. This masterpiece of pre-modern Hindi literature has always reached its largely illiterate audiences primarily through oral performance including ceremonial recitation, folksinging, oral exegesis, and theatrical representation. Drawing on fieldwork in Banaras, Lutgendorf breaks new ground by capturing the range of performance techniques in vivid detail and tracing the impact of the epic in its contemporary cultural context.

However, confusion and lack of proper information are still serious obstacles on the path of proper understanding and realisation. India, or as it was called in ancient times, Bharata Varsha, has an immense potential that can be materialised simply by returning to the correctoriginal perspective of the golden Vedic civilisation that is the natural heritage of all Indians and in fact of all human beings. The Rig Veda samhita (9.63.5) points us in the correct direction: Krinvanto visvam aryam, "Let everyone become arya"

Book excerpt: The Hanuman Chalisa authored by Goswami Tulsidas is one of the most popular Hindu devotional hymns. The 'Mahaviri' Hindi commentary (1984) by Swami Rambhadracharya has been acclaimed as the best treatise on the Hanuman Chalisa. This book presents an annotated and expanded English translation of the 'Mahaviri' commentary by Nityanand Misra. Each of the 43 verses of the 'Hanuman Chalisa' is explained in three stages. The first phase being a word-for-word translation to help the reader understand the literal meaning of each word in a verse. The second is a simple English translation of each verse. This third and final phase is an informed commentary on the true meaning of the verse, explaining the deep essence of the text with citations from authoritative Hindu scriptures (the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Gita, etc.) and other works of Goswami Tulsidas. All such citations are also translated into English. Following the commentary, Misra also provides five useful appendices for advanced readers. These include more than 120 endnotes (annotations), a detailed note on the prosody and rhythm of all the verses for chanters, the musical notation of the traditional melody of the Hanuman Chalisa for devotional singers and instrumentalists, and two alphabetical indexes for all words and verses used in the hymn. The book is a must-have for reciters and singers of the Hanuman Chalisa who want to understand the deep essence of Tulsidas's timeless hymn to Hanuman. It targets laypersons as well as scholarly readers. The design of the book, including font sizes and line spacing, is suitable for the elderly as well. The book has reached thousands of readers across the globe and has been praised as “the most comprehensive guide to the Hanuman Chalisa available in English”. It has been loved by readers for not only its scholarship and research, but also for its beautiful production, aesthetic typeface, attractive layout, and excellent footnotes and appendices.

Book excerpt: Sugriva, the chief of the forest dwellers in Kishkindha, was resting in his safe haven on the top of Mount Rishyamukha, a place where his estranged brother Vali could not attack him. Though he was safeguarded from the powerful influence of his brother, Sugriva was by no means in a peaceful condition. At every second of the day there was trepidation, as someone could be coming to attack him. Therefore it wasn’t surprising that when he saw two handsome and well-built young men carrying weapons approaching his forest, he became a bit apprehensive. These two princes seen from a distance appeared to be very powerful, and they were certainly not in the right place. The forest was meant for the animals and the ascetics, so the presence of two such powerful fighters was certainly conspicuous. As any good leader would do, Sugriva approached his most trusted aide and asked him to go down and meet the two princes. “See what they want, for I’m afraid they might be assassins sent by Vali to do me in.” Sugriva’s chief minister was no ordinary person. He was none other than Shri Hanuman, one of the most famous divine figures in the world. The wonderful details of his subsequent meeting with the two princes, Shri Rama and Shri Lakshmana, are nicely related in the ancient poem called the Ramayana. Hanuman is known as the greatest devotee of Lord Rama, who is Himself an object of worship. The accounts of their initial meeting give insight into the glorious nature of Hanuman and also indicate that his wonderful characteristics were readily identifiable to the one person whose opinion matters, the one entity who all the world has been trying to find and please since the beginning of time. Meeting Hanuman is a collection of twenty one essays discussing the different verses from the Ramayana that describe Hanuman’s meeting with the two princes of the Raghu dynasty, Rama and Lakshmana, who were searching for Sita Devi, Rama’s wife. As whoever has Hanuman’s association is forever benefitted, Rama’s reunion with Sita and the permanent alleviation of Sugriva’s fears would both have their genesis in this wonderful meeting.
