Book The Vanishing Present

    Book Details:
  • Author : Donald M. Waller
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2009-08-01
  • ISBN : 0226871746

Download or read book The Vanishing Present written by Donald M. Waller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straddling temperate forests and grassland biomes and stretching along the coastline of two Great Lakes, Wisconsin contains tallgrass prairie and oak savanna, broadleaf and coniferous forests, wetlands, natural lakes, and rivers. But, like the rest of the world, the Badger State has been transformed by urbanization and sprawl, population growth, and land-use change. For decades, industry and environment have attempted to coexist in Wisconsin—and the dynamic tensions between economic progress and environmental protection makes the state a fascinating microcosm for studying global environmental change. The Vanishing Present brings together a distinguished set of contributors—including scientists, naturalists, and policy experts—to examine how human pressures on Wisconsin’s changing lands, waters, and wildlife have redefined the state’s ecology. Though they focus on just one state, the authors draw conclusions about changes in temperate habitats that can be applied elsewhere, and offer useful insights into future of the ecology, conservation, and sustainability of Wisconsin and beyond. A fitting tribute to the home state of Aldo Leopold and John Muir, The Vanishing Present is an accessible and timely case study of a significant ecosystem and its response to environmental change.

Book Point of Beginnings

Download or read book Point of Beginnings written by Jeremy Batson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My own point of beginnings is high atop a rocky lookout in the unglaciated Driftless region of Southwestern Wisconsin. From this beloved place I begin to explore and clarify my own relationship with nature and the meaning of wild. At valley bottom a humble spring-fed creek links me to my neighbors across our private land boundaries, creating a starting point to survey historical changes as well as contemporary attitudes, perspectives and behaviors towards the more-than-human which includes the once vast prairie, savanna and stream ecosystems. Biodiversity is rapidly declining and ecosystem functioning is unraveling. These and other environmental challenges require humans to take a hard look at how we relate to the interconnected and dynamic systems that support all life. In my own inquiry I seek out a trapper, a fisher, farmers, hunters, and other members of my own bioregion to see where dialogue might start and how it can potentially lead to mutual understanding and common ground. Stewarding the land that I presently call home requires me to scrutinize my own relationship to, and role within, the greater ecosystem, including especially my use of violence in the name of restoration. And intermittent encounters with a crippled deer force me to examine and question the sanctioned relationships that govern the lives of the more-than-human. In the end, I return to the vital question: can we learn to coexist with, and honor, the needs of other living species and the wild embodied in natural ecosystems?
