Book People of the Sturgeon

Download or read book People of the Sturgeon written by Kathleen Schmitt Kline and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People of the Sturgeon tells the poignant story of an ancient fish. Wanton harvest and habitat loss took a heavy toll on these prehistoric creatures until they teetered on the brink of extinction. But, in Wisconsin, lake sturgeon have flourished because of the dedicated work of Department of Natural Resources staff, university researchers and a determined group of spearers known as Sturgeon For Tomorrow. Thanks to these efforts, spearers can still flock by the thousands to frozen Lake Winnebago each winter to take part in a ritual rooted in the traditions of the Menominee and other Wisconsin Indians. A century of sturgeon management on Lake Winnebago has produced the world's largest and healthiest lake sturgeon population. Through a fascinating collection of images, stories and interviews, People of the Sturgeon chronicles the history of this remarkable fish and the cultural traditions it has spawned. The authors introduce a colorful cast of characters with a good fish tale to tell. Color photos by the late Bob Rashid and images from the Wisconsin Historical Society evoke both the magical and the mortal. Weaving together myriad voices and examining the sturgeon's profound cultural impact, the authors reveal how a diverse group of people are now joined together as "people of the sturgeon."

Book Sturgeons and Paddlefish of North America

Download or read book Sturgeons and Paddlefish of North America written by G.T.O LeBreton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-01-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern North American sturgeons and paddlefish are the result of 100 million years of evolution. Once an integral part of aboriginal culture, their numbers were decimated by overfishing and habitat destruction during the past two centuries. This book details the extensive science aimed at helping these remarkable species recover from the brink of extinction, and describes the historical, biological, and ecological importance of North American sturgeon and paddlefish. The text is enhanced by photographs and detailed line drawings. This comprehensive volume will be an invaluable resource for researchers, educators, and consultants, in academic and government settings, who work to further scientific understanding of these fishes. No other single compilation has documented current information in such detail.

Book Sturgeon biodiversity and conservation

Download or read book Sturgeon biodiversity and conservation written by Vadim J. Birstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1997-05-31 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a synthesis of basic biological and conservation data for more than 30 species of sturgeons (Acipenseridae), paddlefishes (Polyodontidae) and their fossil allies in the order Acipenseriformes. Since the Jurassic, the four families of sturgeon-like fish have been restricted to the Holarctic, where until very recently they flourished in most major river systems. Today, however, virtually all species of sturgeons and paddlefishes face difficult conservation issues. Papers in the first section of this volume examine paleontology, systematics, evolution and basic biology of Acipenseriformes. The second section of this volume details current conservation status for most of the world's living species of Acipenseriformes. These papers mark the first attempt to make such a global review of recent data from across the northern hemisphere. The emerging picture is discouraging, for negative anthropogenic impacts range from overfishing to water pollution, to dams and water diversion projects, and all species are threatened to some degree. The third section of the volume considers specific human impacts and responses to conservation issues. These include: the Aral Sea ecological disaster and its impact on native sturgeons; a review of methods for restoring sturgeon populations; the use of molecular techniques in developing conservation strategies; the extreme sensitivity of sturgeons and paddlefishes to overfishing; and the history of a recently convicted caviar poaching ring. The volume's summary reviews the status of all extant species and notes future directions for research on behavior, ecology and population biology that could lead to better co-ordinated international conservation efforts.

Book Lake Sturgeon Spawning Behavior Larval Production and Juvenile Habitat Use Within the Lower Fox River Wisconsin

Download or read book Lake Sturgeon Spawning Behavior Larval Production and Juvenile Habitat Use Within the Lower Fox River Wisconsin written by Stefan Tucker and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) populations have experienced declines throughout much of the Great Lakes and are currently a target for restoration. The Lower Fox River is a highly modified river system that hosts a small remnant Lake Sturgeon population. Previous work confirms annual spawning and some natural reproduction but inconsistent monitoring yields little understanding to current status and sustainability of this population. Chapter 1 describes the biological attributes of the spawning adult stock during 2017-2019 and the environmental conditions surrounding these annual events. In addition to a demographic description of adults, spawning habitat quantity and quality were evaluated to showcase reproductive potential of Lake Sturgeon below the De Pere Dam in the Lower Fox River, Wisconsin. Our description of adult demographics suggest adequate population structure exists to support reproductive success and spawning occurs during favorable seasonal conditions; therefore this population should be capable of significantly higher levels of larval production. Examinations of spawning substrates, incubation habitats and egg predation identified several factors influencing the reproductive success of this population. Locations of spawning activity are problematic on this system due to temporal desiccation events, algae colonization and egg/larval dislodgment which may severely restrict egg and larval survival. Consistent monitoring of spawning adults and larval production would continue to describe the stability of this population. Improvements to habitat quality and quantity should become priority restoration actions to ensure reproductive success. The ability to improve egg and larval survival would provide the opportunity to assign restoration targets and assess the effectiveness of restoration strategies for this population. Chapter 2 continues to evaluate Lake Sturgeon habitat availability in the Lower Fox River by investigating the riverine use of juveniles. Expanding knowledge pertaining to early life stage habitats and movement patterns are listed as a critical need for management. Documented low levels of production within this river system make it uncertain if wild juveniles are present and to what extent nursery habitats exist. Previous habitat models suggest ample juvenile habitat is present, however a legacy of pollution and recent restoration actives to remove contained sediments and improve river condition, make it uncertain if the river is utilized as a nursery area. Age-0 Lake Sturgeon were implanted with hydro-acoustic transmitters and tracked for 40 days during late summer in 2018 and 2019 to document movement patterns and areas of occupancy in the Lower Fox River. Results demonstrate that juvenile Lake Sturgeon will reside in the river system for extended periods of time and congregate into focal habitat areas. Six core habitat areas were identified in the upper river section suggesting the presence of functional nursery habitat. This is the first documentation of juvenile Lake Sturgeon habitat use following restoration activities in the Lower Fox River and will serve to help guide future habitat improvements and further knowledge of juvenile life stage ecology in this river system. The information gathered in this study provides a greater understanding to the reproductive limitations of this population and early life history needs as well as assign restoration targets to improve Lake Sturgeon sustainability in the Lower Fox River.
