Book From Bay to Boat

Book excerpt: Lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) populations have supported commercial fishers in the Great Lakes for centuries, and while recent basin wide declines are concerning, the whitefish population resident to the waters of Green Bay is experiencing an increase in population size. The result is a thriving commercial fishing industry and a firm push to increase annual harvest quotas. The problem central to this thesis is that managers do not have a full understanding of the spatial and temporal distribution of catch of lake whitefish within the waters of Green Bay. There have also been few attempts to describe the magnitude and composition of non-target species and there is little data available comparing the two primary modes of harvest (gill nets and trap nets). The primary goal of this thesis was to better understand this fishery with emphasis on lake whitefish using onboard monitoring followed by predictive modeling. Overall, a total 239 and 436 commercial trap net and gill net fishing events were observed during 2020 and 2021 fishing seasons, respectively. In 2021 alone, 70,590 lake whitefish were harvested and 66,396 were discarded. Additionally, mean discard mortality was approximately 47% in gill nets and 2% in trap nets during the 2021 fishing season. Specifically, the bulk of lake whitefish harvest in trap nets occurred in June around Larsons Reef and was loosely associated with factors including water depth, soak time, and surface water temperature. A total of 3,899 non-target species were observed in 2021 across both net types and the catch of walleye, a key sport fish in this area, was low relative to the projected population size and occurred during distinct times of the year. These results aid both managers and fishers in finding a balance between optimizing lake whitefish harvest while simultaneously mitigating the potential impacts of the commercial fishery in Green Bay.

Book Fish for All

Download or read book Fish for All written by Michael J. Chiarappa and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contentious claims of groups seeking to use Lake Michigan's fisheries resources were at the center of modern America's emerging environmental politics in the middle of the twentieth century. Going beyond the chronicling of past events, Fish for All contextualizes the shared experiences that shape each group's collective memory and presents their historical narratives as discourse that legitimizes their current claims to the resource. Fish for All highlights the historically charged consciousness of fishing communities and points to the evolving communication that will take place between them, fisheries historians, fisheries anthropologists, scientists, and policymakers.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents information on the formation of the Great Lakes, the American Indian Fishermen of the Lake Michigan Basin, the fish species, nets, and boats vital to the commercial fishing industry, and the calamitous causes behind the industry's implosion. This study investigates the catalysts behind the decline of the commercial fishing enterprise on Lake Michigan by utilizing primary sources including but not limited to, government reports, catch quotas, state fish commission reports, and manuscripts. The topic was selected because the history of Lake Michigan commercial fishing from 1870-1925 has never been thoroughly researched and put into a single volume for examination. Therefore, knowing how Lake Michigan's commercial ecological status once was will provide a historical guidepost for not only policymakers but also for the public, to help promote prudent managing measures for not only the fish but the entire Great Lakes ecosystem.
