From the Society’s earliest days as pioneers worked to record history even as it was happening, to its struggles to weather the Great Depression, and its landmark efforts to record the most important social and political movements of our times. From its very start, the Society has worked to “treasure up” the stories of people from every walk of life, in every corner of the state. The story behind the Wisconsin Historical Society is a uniquely Wisconsin story – one that belongs to all who call Wisconsin home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisconsin Magazine of History, 1918-1919, Vol. 2: Publications of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin The Milwaukee Sentinel was the first newspaper to take up the challenge thrown down by the champions of the Lutheran Church. Oit sent Henry E. Legler, then a member of its staff, to visit the parochial schools of Milwaukee; his report proved that the Lutheran schools Of the metropolis were well within the law, which had no application to institu tions wherein English was taught for twelve weeks of the year.26 It was this report and the subsequent editorial com ment that forced the issue into the light of day. It was the language requirement to which the church authorities oh jected. The Milwaukee schools were by no means typical of parochial schools throughout the state. Case after case came to light in the subsequent discussion of children born and reared in Wisconsin who were unable to speak a word of English.27 From Manitowoc came the statement that not one in ten of the parochial schools in that county taught a word of English.28 It was asserted that even public schools in the thickly settled German districts were conducted wholly in German.29 In fact, said the Manitowoc County Chronicle. Download or read book The History of Wisconsin Volume II written by Richard N. Current and published by Wisconsin Historical Society. This book was released on 2013-03-28 with total page 701 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the History of Wisconsin series introduces us to the first generation of statehood, from the conversion of prairie and forests into farmland to the development of cities and industry. In addition, this volume presents a synthesis of the Civil War and Reconstruction era in Wisconsin. Scarcely a decade after entering the Union, the state was plunged into the nationwide debate over slavery, the secession crisis, and a war in which 11,000 "Badger Boys in Blue" gave their lives. Wisconsin's role in the Civil War is chronicled, along with the post-war years. Complete with photographs from the Historical Society's collections, as well as many pertinent maps, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in this era of Wisconsin's history.
