Book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology

Download or read book Quaternary Glaciations Extent and Chronology written by J. Ehlers and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 1128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents an up-to-date, detailed overview of the Quaternary glaciations all over the world, not only with regard to stratigraphy but also with regard to major glacial landforms and the extent of the respective ice sheets. The locations of key sites are included. The information is presented in digital, uniformly prepared maps which can be used in a Geographical Information System (GIS) such as ArcView or ArcGIS. The accompanying text supplies the information on how the data were obtained (geomorphology, geological mapping, air photograph evaluation, satellite imagery), how the features were dated (14C, TL, relative stratigraphy) and how reliable they are supposed to be. All references to the underlying basic publications are included. Where controversial interpretations are possible e.g. in Siberia or Tibet, this is pointed out. As a result, the information on Quaternary glaciations worldwide will be much improved and supplied in a uniform digital format. The information on the glacial limits is compiled in digital form by the coordinators of the project, and is available for download at: http://booksite.elsevier.com/9780444534477/ Completely updated detailed coverage of worldwide Quaternary glaciations Information in digital, uniformly prepared maps which can be used in a GIS such as ArcView or ArcGis Step-by-step guideline how to open and use ArcGis files Possibility to convert the shapefiles into GoogleEarth kmz-files Availability of chronological controls

This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focuses on the last time glaciers spread across the continent, using the records of former ice sheets, glaciers, and pluvial lakes to understand the response of North American ice sheets and glaciers to the climate change that ended the last (before ours) interglacial period. The 21 papers, most fro

Book Quaternary Geology Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia

Download or read book Quaternary Geology Cape Breton Island Nova Scotia written by D. R. Grant and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes and explains the unconsolidated surface materials and landforms of Cape Breton Island, tracing the history of geological processes that shaped the area during the late Cenozoic time and emphasizing the previous interglacial period and the last glacial period. Initial field work was conducted in the summers of 1970 and 1971. Documentation of the surficial geological map units was by ground observation. Most of the coast was studied on foot, with the remainder by boat. Additional incidental observations, local stratigraphic studies, and traverse of new highland forestry access roads were made on an opportunity basis in 1974, 1976, 1982, 1993, and 1994.

Book Wisconsinan Glaciation of the Atlantic Continental Shelf of Southeast Canada

Download or read book Wisconsinan Glaciation of the Atlantic Continental Shelf of Southeast Canada written by L. H. King and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Areas of the eastern eastern Gulf of Maine, Scotian Shelf and Grand Banks ofNewfoundland were examined using the Juntec deep-towed, high-resolution, seismic stratigraphy, together with regional surficial geologicalformations. This approach provided new insight into the nature of theglacial environment of the shelf, the relationship between the glaciomarineand glacial sediments, the depositional processes which led to the formationof these units, and the extent and age of glaciation of the shelf and itsrelationship to the glacial history of the mainland.

Book Encyclopedia of Snow Ice and Glaciers

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Snow Ice and Glaciers written by Vijay P. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 1301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earth’s cryosphere, which includes snow, glaciers, ice caps, ice sheets, ice shelves, sea ice, river and lake ice, and permafrost, contains about 75% of the earth’s fresh water. It exists at almost all latitudes, from the tropics to the poles, and plays a vital role in controlling the global climate system. It also provides direct visible evidence of the effect of climate change, and, therefore, requires proper understanding of its complex dynamics. This encyclopedia mainly focuses on the various aspects of snow, ice and glaciers, but also covers other cryospheric branches, and provides up-to-date information and basic concepts on relevant topics. It includes alphabetically arranged and professionally written, comprehensive and authoritative academic articles by well-known international experts in individual fields. The encyclopedia contains a broad spectrum of topics, ranging from the atmospheric processes responsible for snow formation; transformation of snow to ice and changes in their properties; classification of ice and glaciers and their worldwide distribution; glaciation and ice ages; glacier dynamics; glacier surface and subsurface characteristics; geomorphic processes and landscape formation; hydrology and sedimentary systems; permafrost degradation; hazards caused by cryospheric changes; and trends of glacier retreat on the global scale along with the impact of climate change. This book can serve as a source of reference at the undergraduate and graduate level and help to better understand snow, ice and glaciers. It will also be an indispensable tool containing specialized literature for geologists, geographers, climatologists, hydrologists, and water resources engineers; as well as for those who are engaged in the practice of agricultural and civil engineering, earth sciences, environmental sciences and engineering, ecosystem management, and other relevant subjects.

Book The Pleistocene of North America and its vertebrated animals

Download or read book The Pleistocene of North America and its vertebrated animals written by Oliver Perry Hay and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writer has been engaged for several years on an investigation of the Pleistocene geology of North America and of the Vertebrata which have been discovered in the deposits of this epoch. At the outset the writer was convinced that, before just conclusions could be reached, it was necessary to know what fossil materials had been collected and under what geological and geographical conditions. He therefore made as thorough a search as possible of the literature for reports of discoveries of fossil vertebrates. In order to show the geographical distribution of the most important species that occur in considerable numbers, a series of maps has been prepared. Where the map of a State has become too crowded with numerals, a special map of that State for that species or genus has been prepared. There are maps of the edentates in Florida; mastodons of Indiana, of New York, of Ohio, of Michigan, of Florida; Elephas columbi in Florida; Elephas imperator in Florida; horses in Florida.
