Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony Popularly Explained There have been several books written on the subject for the expert or technical man, but so far nothing has been written that explains it in a way that every one may understand. In this book the authors use simple expressions, con taining no technical words, so that all may obtain a clear idea of the inception and development of this much-talked oi art. We here describe the substance through which signals are sent, the theory of the propagation of waves, method of generating and receiving the waves, the apparatus used, and, finally, the uses, limitations, and possibilities. Of wireless telegraphy both commercially and financially. Providence, R. I. Walter W. Massie. Him You. Charles R. Underhill. Book Manual of Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual of Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony Classic Reprint written by A. Frederick Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony The tremendous strides in wireless during the past ten years have necessitated a revision of this Manual. In the matter of improved apparatus the alternating current transformer has largely taken the place of the induction coil and the auto receptor has all but superseded the coherer receptor in practical installations, with the result that both the working and the efficiency of stations have been greatly improved. Due to these and other advances it has been found expedient to segregate the chapter on The Apparatus of a Commercial Station and treat the transmitting and the receiving instruments separately. Aerials is a subject to which much new text has been added since the flat-tops or T aerial has come into general use together with better methods of suspension than those treated of in the previous editions of this Manual. Furthermore, considerable useful data have been appended under the caption of Suggestions to Operators relating to the management of stations. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy an Elementary Treatise In spite, however, of the above achievements of wireless telegraphy during the past two years, the development of wireless telephony has been still more pronounced. During that time, the range distance of wireless telephony has remarkably increased; so that, although far below that of wireless telegraphy of the present time, it is comparable to that of wire less telegraphy ten years ago. It has, there fore, seemed desirable to add to this book sev eral chapters on wireless telephony, while bringing the subject of wireless telegraphy up to date. Download or read book Wireless Telegraphy and Wireless Telephony written by Charles Grinnell Ashley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wireless Telegraphy and Wireless Telephony: An Understandable Presentation of the Science of Wireless Transmission of Intelligence Work of Steinheil. Today it seems glaringly obvious that the earth may be used as a conductor, but in 1838 when Steinheil, a Bavarian, accidentally discovered this fact, it created quite a sensa tion. He had been experimenting with the steel rails of a railroad trying to utilize them as substitutes for the wires of a telegraph cir cuit, but was unable to obtain sufficient insulation. He was sur prised to discover, however, what a high degree of conductivity the earth possessed, and was led to conceive that he might employ it instead of the return wire hitherto used. He made the experiment, and with complete success, thus introducing into telegraphy one of its most important features-the earth circuit. Expanding the idea, Steinheil wondered if it were not possible to telegraph through the earth without using metallic conductors at all. This experiment, which was successful over very short distances, is said to have been the first attempt to telegraph without wires. Steinheil, however, being unable to signal farther than 50 feet, gave up this method, convinced that it was inexpedient for telegraphy. Download or read book Works on Wireless Telegraphy and Allied Subjects Classic Reprint written by John Ambrose a Fleming and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Works on Wireless Telegraphy and Allied Subjects The Preface of a book is the place in which the Author makes his excuses for writing it, or his explanations of its scope and purpose. Following this practice, it may be mentioned that the writer published in 1902 a little book entitled "Waves and Ripples in Water, Air, and AEther," through The Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, which was a reprint, with some amplifications, of a Course of Christmas Lectures given at the Royal Institution, London. The last chapter of that book contains a brief reference to the then young art of radiotelegraphy. In the years that have since elapsed, this branch of telegraphy has developed with wonderful rapidity into a unique and most valuable means of communication. The importance of it is shown by the fact that three International Conventions and two Parliamentary Committees have deliberated at length on its regulation and condition within the short space of ten years. A large and highly technical literature has grown up around it, and an industry of considerable dimensions been created by it. Its astonishing achievements have raised a desire in the minds of the general public to know something of its mode of operation and possible future development, but in a form divested as far as possible of unexplained technicalities or abstruse formulae. Many of the popular books written with this object seem to the writer to give insufficient explanations of the physical processes involved. Download or read book A Treatise Upon Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony written by C. I. Hoppough and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise Upon Wireless Telegraphy and Telephony While serving as Inspector for the United Wireless Telegraph Company, the attention of the author was frequently called to the inability of operators to efficiently use the apparatus installed for Radio communication over which they had supervision. This inability could almost invariably be traced to either a misapplication of the principles governing the action of certain instruments of the equipment, or a deficiency of knowledge concerning these principles. Many operators, having had no previous training, were unable to master the technical explanations given by some of the prominent authors of treatises upon Wireless Telegraphy on account of the mathematical reasoning employed by them. While it is impossible to go deeply into the study of Wireless Telegraphy without the aid of higher mathematics, an attempt will be made in this book to explain in as unmathematical terms as possible a few of the fundamental principles and to illustrate their application to the solution of practical problems which arise daily in the routine of wireless operating. Fortunate indeed is the student of wireless telegraphy who has had the opportunity of studying "The Principles of Electric Wave Telegraphy and Telephony", by J. A. Fleming, and the "Principles of Wireless Telegraphy", by Geo. W. Pierce, and it is on account of the clearness of the explanations and the reliability of information given in the above mentioned books that they will be quoted in the following pages. The author wishes to mention his obligation to the Wireless News and Publishing Co., Sampson Publishing Co., Clapp-Eastham Co. and the Electro Importing Co. for permission to use certain illustrations furnished by them; to the Standard Wireless Equipment Co. for the loan of equipment tested; to Mr. J. M. Baskerville for the loan of a number of photographs of equipment which have materially assisted in explanations; and finally to Mr. G. M. Dodge, whose friendly assistance has made the publication of this book possible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters of Space Morse and the Telegraph Thompson and the Cable Bell and the Telephone Marconi and the Wireless Telegraph: Carty and the Wireless Telephone One can scarce overestimate the value Of modern methods Of communication to the world. So much of our development has been more or less directly dependent upon it that it is difficult to fancy our situation without the telegraph and telephone. The diligence with which the ancients sought speedy methods for the sending Of messages demonstrates the human need for them. The solution of this great problem, though long delayed, came swiftly, once it was begun. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
