Book A Biography of Robert Henry Winters

Download or read book A Biography of Robert Henry Winters written by Barry Cahill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-15 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography is of Nova Scotian Robert Henry Winters (1910-1969) who was first elected to Parliament in 1945 and appointed to Cabinet by Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent in 1948. Between 1957 and 1965 Winters was one of Canada’s most prominent businessmen, running companies specializing in resource extraction and development. Returning to politics in 1965, he was again elected to Parliament and soon joined the Cabinet of Prime Minister Lester Pearson as minister of trade and commerce. Notably, Winters placed second to Pierre Trudeau in the vote to choose the new leader of Canada’s Liberal Party in 1968. Leaving politics once again and re-entering big business, Winters became president, and then chair of Brascan (now Brookfield Asset Management) before his unexpected death. This book will be a welcome read for anyone interested in Canadian politics, especially within the Liberal Party, Canadian business, and the interaction between the two.

Book Winston County Alabama Cemeteries Volume 1

Download or read book Winston County Alabama Cemeteries Volume 1 written by Robin Sterling and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cemeteries of Winston County contain the ancestors of the descendants who populate the county. They contain the remains of the earliest settlers, Civil War soldiers, early county officials and politicians, merchants, tradesmen, farmers, and their familes. Without their successful efforts to carve an existence out of the Winston County wildnerness, the rest of us would not be here. Much of the history of the county was written on the old tombstones found across the county. Volume I of this two volume series alphabetically covers Winston County Cemeteries A through L beginning with the Addison Church of God Cemetery and ending with the Liberty Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The book contains dozens of pictures of the cemeteries plus hundreds of annotations which include sites of unmarked graves mentioned in newspaper accounts plus the company and unit of every known Civil War era soldier, both Union and Confederate. The book concludes with a full name index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Journalistic Achievement Award, Texas Historical Foundation, 2004 From the simplest slab of weathered stone to the most imposing mausoleum, every marker in a Texas cemetery bears witness to a life that—in ways small or large—helped shape the history and culture of the state. Telling the stories of some of these significant lives is the purpose of this book. Within its pages, you'll meet not only the heroes of the Texas Revolution, for example, but also one of the great African American cowboys of the traildriving era (Bose Ikard) and the first woman in Texas elected to statewide office (Annie Webb Blanton). Visiting cemeteries from every era and all regions of the state, Bill Harvey recounts the histories of famous, infamous, and just plain interesting Texans who lie at rest in Texas cemeteries. The book is organized alphabetically by city for easy reference. For each city, Harvey lists one or more cemeteries, giving their location and history, if significant. At the heart of the book are his profiles of the noteworthy people buried in each cemetery. They include not only famous but also lesser-known and even unknown Texans who made important contributions to the state in the arts, sports, business, military service, politics—truly every area of communal life. For those who want to visit these resting places, Harvey also includes tips on finding cemeteries, locating gravesites, and taking good photographs. Spend time with him in the graveyards of Texas, and you'll soon appreciate what fascinating stories the silent stones can tell.

Book Oddball Ohio

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jerome Pohlen
  • Publisher : Chicago Review Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9781556525230
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Oddball Ohio written by Jerome Pohlen and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This off-the-wall travel guide presents an Ohio odder than imagined. It wastes no time describing Cedar Point or suggesting scenic bike rides through the Hocking Hills; instead, this entertaining travel companion directs out-of-state adventurers and Buckeye state residents to the home of the world's largest cockroach, an Amish SUV, Egg Shell Land, a two-headed calf, and the Accounting Hall of Fame. Ohio is depicted as the birthplace of bar codes, Airstream trailers, televangelism, Paul Lynde, Alcoholics Anonymous, and the banana split. Odd stories abound, and tales of Ohio as the only state where Jerry Springer has been elected the mayor of a major city, where a brick outhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places, and where Buster the Dog voted for president accompany the site-seeing suggestions. Plenty of photos and maps ensure that this guide is as practical as it is wacky when seeking out wonders such as the Great Pumpkin Watertower, Goodyear’s World of Rubber, and Bogart and Bacall's wedding site, then relaxing with a brew at the World’s Longest Bar.
