Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spalding's Winter Sports Winter sports are now a most important feature of the out door life of the northern half of the world. During the past ten years there has been a complete change in the attitude of the sport-loving folks of northern nations toward what was once regarded as the least interesting outdoor season of the year. Now, there are great numbers of experienced outdoor folks. Familiar with the Sports of the world, who do not hesitate to claim that the outdoor sports of the winter, in cold, snowy latitudes, are incomparably the most fascinating as well as the most beneficial pastimes of the four seasons. The enthusiasm of these new champions of winter is making itself felt all over the world; but especially in the United States, where outdoor sport of every kind is now enjoying the zenith of its popularity, and where there is constant demand for some new form of out door pastime, has the charm of the new outings on snow and ice made special appeal. Book A Book of Winter Sports

Download or read book A Book of Winter Sports written by J. C. Dier and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Winter Sports: An Attempt to Catch the Spirit of the Keen Joys of the Winter Season The friction type of ice-motor first received serious at tention when, in 1911, Fred Waters, of Red Bank, stumbled into a sensation by putting his runabout on runners with a cogged wheel motor driven. It is said that he had no thought of its being unusually Speedy, but simply aimed to take advantage of the better and less obstructed surface of the ice as compared with the rough roads. The speed of this auto-sleigh with an engine of only Six horsepower was so remarkable that in the next winter he took a Ford chassis, placed runners where the front wheels were, and rear runners on a three-foot extension of the back of the Chassis. In place of the tires on the rear wheels are about thirty-six sharp steel plates which attend to its propulsion when driven by a twenty-two and a half horsepower eu gine. This ice-sled is driven exactly as one drives an auto mobile, and runs smoothly; springs in the front and rear make riding comfortable even at the highest speed. Mr. Waters believes that he will be able to make almost a mile a minute on clear ice, which seems to be about the speed developed so far by the propeller type on Saranac Lake. Intense interest is being Shown in the new sport by both veteran ice-yachtsmen and automobile owners who were never aboard an ice - boat; there is no question but that ice motors will soon be thoroughly studied in the manufac turers' designing rooms, and that motor ice-running will head the list of winter sports in which speed is a factor. Book Track Athletics Up to Date Classic Reprint

Download or read book Track Athletics Up to Date Classic Reprint written by Ellery H. Clark and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Track Athletics Up to Date To make my meaning clear, let us consider, by way of comparison, the familiar example of the attorney who 18 consulted upon a point of law. Rarely, if he 13 a man of experience, does he give his answer offhand, but, on the contrary, his first act is to consult the authorities and to read the decisions of the courts and the theories of the text writers on the point in question. Then, and then only, is he in a position to express an intelligent opinion upon the case. It is this principle which I have borne in mind in writing the present volume. First, I have endeavored to trace, with brevity, the history of track athletics; next, I have noted some of the best of the many books, pamphlets and special articles which have been written on this subject; and lastly, I have tried to summarize, in the year 1919, our present knowledge of proper methods of training and of performing the various events on track and field. The idea itself is, I think, sound, and, within its special field, not without novelty. Of the manner in which I have developed it, the reader, of course, must be the judge. I desire to record here my sincere thanks to Mr. Michael J. Conroy, of the staff of the Boston Public Library, for his unfailing kindness in helping me to bring together the varied material upon which this book is based. Book Winter Sports in Switzerland Classic Reprint

Download or read book Winter Sports in Switzerland Classic Reprint written by E. F. Benson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winter Sports in Switzerland There is an amazingly Silly proverb which quite mistakenly tells us that seeing is believing. The most ordinary conjurer at a village entertainment will prove the falsity Of this saying. For who has not seen one of these plausible mountebanks put a watch into a top-hat, and, after Clearly smashing it into a thousand pieces with a pestle, stir up the disintegrated fragments with a spoon and produce an omelette Or who is SO unacquainted with the affairs Of the village schoolroom at Christmas as not to have seen a solid billiard-ball or a lively canary squeezed out of the side Of a fiiend's head Such phenomena are by no means rare, and occur periodically all over England. The Observer's eyes have told him that he has seen such things, and the verb to see is merely a compendious expression to indicate that on the evidence of your eyes such or such a phenomenon has actually occurred. But no one believes that the disintegrated watch has become an omelette though ocular evidence - seeing - insists that it has. It was a conjuring trick. And this leads me to the consideration of the phenomena on which this whole book is based. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Ten Thousand Miles With a Dog Sled

Download or read book Ten Thousand Miles With a Dog Sled written by Hudson Stuck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Thousand Miles With a Dog Sled: A Narrative of Winter Travel in Interior Alaska This volume deals with a series of journeys taken with a dog team over the winter trails in the interior of Alaska. The title might have claimed fourteen or fifteen thousand miles instead of ten, for the book was projected and the title adopted some years ago, and the journeys have continued. But ten thousand is a good round titular number, and is none the worse for being well within the mark. So far as mere distance is concerned, anyway, there is nothing noteworthy in this record. There are many men in Alaska who have done much more. A mail carrier on one of the longer dog routes will cover four thousand miles in a winter, while the writer's average is less than two thousand. But his sled has gone far off the beaten track, across the arctic wilderness, into many remote corners; wherever, indeed, white men or natives were to be found in all the great interior. These journeys were connected primarily with the administration of the extensive work of the Episcopal Church in the interior of Alaska, under the bishop of the diocese; but that feature of them has been fully set forth from time to time in the church publications, and finds only incidental reference here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In a grand gesture of reclamation and remembrance, Mr. Halberstam has brought the war back home."---The New York Times David Halberstam's magisterial and thrilling The Best and the Brightest was the defining book about the Vietnam conflict. More than three decades later, Halberstam used his unrivaled research and formidable journalistic skills to shed light on another pivotal moment in our history: the Korean War. Halberstam considered The Coldest Winter his most accomplished work, the culmination of forty-five years of writing about America's postwar foreign policy. Halberstam gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides. He charts the disastrous path that led to the massive entry of Chinese forces near the Yalu River and that caught Douglas MacArthur and his soldiers by surprise. He provides astonishingly vivid and nuanced portraits of all the major figures--Eisenhower, Truman, Acheson, Kim, and Mao, and Generals MacArthur, Almond, and Ridgway. At the same time, Halberstam provides us with his trademark highly evocative narrative journalism, chronicling the crucial battles with reportage of the highest order. As ever, Halberstam was concerned with the extraordinary courage and resolve of people asked to bear an extraordinary burden. The Coldest Winter is contemporary history in its most literary and luminescent form, providing crucial perspective on every war America has been involved in since. It is a book that Halberstam first decided to write more than thirty years ago and that took him nearly ten years to complete. It stands as a lasting testament to one of the greatest journalists and historians of our time, and to the fighting men whose heroism it chronicles.

  • Author : Douglas E. Winter
  • Publisher : Knopf
  • Release : 2012-03-07
  • ISBN : 0375411623
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Run written by Douglas E. Winter and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The buyers find us. Establish their bona fides. Then, and only then, we run. Burdon Lane is a businessman living out the American Dream in a shiny suburb of Washington, D.C. His business card lists him as Executive VP of UniArms, Inc., a legitimate arms dealer that's a front for a gunrunning empire. His girlfriend thinks he's a salesman. His best friend thinks he's a role model. His boss thinks he's a good soldier. This weekend's run should be business as usual -- guns for money, money for guns -- moving the product north on the Iron Highway from Dirty City to Manhattan. But this weekend is going to teach Burdon something he doesn't yet know about who he is . . . and isn't. When the meet in Manhattan turns into a five-alarm fire and an all-out war on the tenth floor of a New York hotel, there is only one way out: an uneasy alliance with a hard case named Jinx and the street gang known as the U Street Crew. And once the heat is on, with a cadre of killers and every police officer and Federal agent on the eastern seaboard on their tail, Burdon gets the chilling sensation that, one way or another, this so-called milk run may be his last. This is the story of the last run, the run where no one -- criminal, cop, or civilian -- is who or what they seem. Douglas E. Winter's debut novel blasts into the dark heart of America's culture of guns and violence with breathtaking velocity. Run is a streamlined tour de force of full-throttle action and high-tech weaponry, a brilliantly controlled ride through America's most brutal terrain, with a surprising moral message -- fantastically harrowing, relentlessly cinematic, impossible to look away from.
