Cut off, people become passive and confused. Panic builds as the food supply dwindles. While the band council and a pocket of community members struggle to maintain order, an unexpected visitor arrives, escaping the crumbling society to the south. Soon after, others follow. The community leadership loses its grip on power as the visitors manipulate the tired and hungry to take control of the reserve. Tensions rise and, as the months pass, so does the death toll due to sickness and despair. Frustrated by the building chaos, a group of young friends and their families turn to the land and Anishinaabe tradition in hopes of helping their community thrive again. Guided through the chaos by an unlikely leader named Evan Whitesky, they endeavor to restore order while grappling with a grave decision. Blending action and allegory, Moon of the Crusted Snow upends our expectations. Out of catastrophe comes resilience. And as one society collapses, another is reborn.

Download or read book Moods of the Ohio Moons written by Merrill C. Gilfillan and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For almost thirty years, Merrill Gilfillan has written outdoor columns devoted primarily to describing and creating moods about the world of nature. These columns are informed by a rural background and field notes from more than sixty years of outdoor experience. In Gilfillan's words, "Observation is more of the mind than of vision; our attitude is the secret of original observation. I choose the subjective approach to outdoor enjoyment. I did this after training in zoology and twenty years of field work as a wildlife biologist....We should learn to seek our own original 'view' of what we observe....The scientific method is necessary to gain facts, but the manner in which one experiences the facts is what will determine their final value to the individual and, perhaps, to society." Moods of the Ohio Moons is the product of this subjective method of observation, balanced with scientific knowledge and intended to encourage readers to explore their own individual appreciation and understanding of nature. Twelve essays, one for each month, relate incidents and events--weather, diagnostic events, vegetation and wildlife, agriculture, trends of land use, and the wild harvest--that contribute to the mood of the time. As Gilfillan demonstrates, each month has its mood established primarily by nature and only secondarily by humans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How you can forecast the weather by the moon. Weather forecasting by the moon has been practised for thousands of years and almanacs were once a common feature of rural life, foretelling storms, floods, and droughts. Ken Ring's mathematical theory that revives the old idea about the moon influencing the weather has provoked a great deal of public interest and debate, and The Lunar Code explains the science behind Ken's work — the mathematics, ancient divination techniques and recently discovered data from space research. This book tells how you, too, can forecast weather by the moon: * Discover how to interpret the coming weather from the moon’s size, shape and appearance. * Predict for yourself weather-related disasters arriving in your region. * Enjoy moon-gazing, as humans have done since the beginning of time, but with a fresh perspective.

Download or read book The Observer s Guide to Planetary Motion written by Dominic Ford and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the naked eye, the most evident defining feature of the planets is their motion across the night sky. It was this motion that allowed ancient civilizations to single them out as different from fixed stars. “The Observer’s Guide to Planetary Motion” takes each planet and its moons (if it has them) in turn and describes how the geometry of the Solar System gives rise to its observed motions. Although the motions of the planets may be described as simple elliptical orbits around the Sun, we have to observe them from a particular vantage point: the Earth, which spins daily on its axis and circles around the Sun each year. The motions of the planets as observed relative to this spinning observatory take on more complicated patterns. Periodically, objects become prominent in the night sky for a few weeks or months, while at other times they pass too close to the Sun to be observed. “The Observer’s Guide to Planetary Motion” provides accurate tables of the best time for observing each planet, together with other notable events in their orbits, helping amateur astronomers plan when and what to observe. Uniquely each of the chapters includes extensive explanatory text, relating the events listed to the physical geometry of the Solar System. Along the way, many questions are answered: Why does Mars take over two years between apparitions (the times when it is visible from Earth) in the night sky, while Uranus and Neptune take almost exactly a year? Why do planets appear higher in the night sky when they’re visible in the winter months? Why do Saturn’s rings appear to open and close every 15 years? This book places seemingly disparate astronomical events into an understandable three-dimensional structure, enabling an appreciation that, for example, very good apparitions of Mars come around roughly every 15 years and that those in 2018 and 2035 will be nearly as good as that seen in 2003. Events are listed for the time period 2010-2030 and in the case of rarer events (such as eclipses and apparitions of Mars) even longer time periods are covered. A short closing chapter describes the seasonal appearance of deep sky objects, which follow an annual cycle as a result of Earth’s orbital motion around the Sun.

Download or read book Walking the Path written by Shirley Laboucane and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people believe you have to be a pagan to appreciate and perform ritual, which is untrue. For thousands of years people have been drawn together to dance, make music, pray and feast, these activities are all the parts of ceremony. The ceremonies in this book are designed to help you become more attuned to yourself, others and nature. You don't have to be a pagan, you don't have to be a shaman or witch, you can be just you with your imagination and a desire to learn and discover. Ritual is the process of taking time out from the rush of life to connect with what you consider sacred. Performing ceremony properly means slowing down and being in the moment without thinking about yesterday or worrying about tomorrow. The ceremonies contained within this book are unique for they are a merging of two powerful nature based belief systems the Cree and the Celtic. The result of the blending is the symbol of spirit and nature dancing in perfect harmony. This book is for the beginner, the explorer, the type of person who wants to learn and have fun with people. It is also for the experienced pagan who would like to have some fresh ideas for ritual.
